POPSGingerbread Caramels 'Tis the season for anything gingerbread-y! Yay! I really shouldn't read so fast; I kept reading the recipe as "Gingerbread Camels" and kept wondering where the camel-shaped cookie cutters were and what made them so much more special than your average gingerbread men! The comments mention that the spice content could be upped a bit on this recipe, best to play around with that. I wonder if fresly steeped ginger or candied ginger would be a good thing to add to the mix.

POPSRunning Doc: "Do the salt" to avoid hyponatremia More: * Follow the fluid recommendations….drink only when thirsty! * Include pretzels or a salted bagel in your pre-race meal. * Favor a sports drink that has some sodium in it over water, which has none. * In the days before the race, add salt to your foods (provided that you don't have high blood pressure or your doctor has restricted your salt intake). * Eat salted pretzels during the last half of the race. * Do the salt! Carry two small salt packets with you (the kind found in fast food restaurants), and before the race and again during the last half of the race (marathon or half-marathon) consume a single packet under your tongue. * After the race, drink a sports drink that has sodium in it and eat some pretzels or a salted bagel. * Stop taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatories 24 hours before your race and do not start again until 6 hours post-race.

POPSStockholm Syndrome: Swedes Held Hostage to CO2 Terrorism Next year, KRAV, Scandinavia’s main organic certification program, will start requiring farmers to convert to low-emissions techniques if they want to display its coveted seal on products, meaning that most greenhouse tomatoes can no longer be called organic. Those standards have stirred some protests. “There are farmers who are happy and farmers who say they are being ruined,” said Johan Cejie, manager of climate issues for KRAV. For example, he said, farmers with high concentrations of peat soil on their property may no longer be able to grow carrots, since plowing peat releases huge amounts of carbon dioxide; to get the organic label, they may have to switch to feed crops that require no plowing.

POPSAmreeka: The Movie As luck would have it, Muna has come to the US at the start of the Iraq War. Anti-Arab sentiment is raging in some quarters. Her brother-in-law, a doctor, has lost patients due to backlash, and her sister is quickly losing patience with the hatred and fear that mars their lives. Though educated and with experience in banking, Muna is unable to find work in her field, but knowing that she must become independent, continues to search for employment, finally finding a job at a local fast food restaurant. Tensions build as Muna, ashamed, tries to hide her place of work from her son and sister; as Fadi deals with bullying bigots at school; and as her sister's family begins to unravel in response to the pressures of the war, and the enormous hardships resulting from anti-Arab bias. Through it all, Muna not only survives, but remains hopeful and thankful for each kind gesture from strangers and new-found friends who come to her assistance in ways small and not so small.

POPSMap of Every McDonalds’s in the Country I just finished reading ‘Don’t Eat This Book’ by Morgan Spurlock (the guy who did Supersize Me http://freedocumentaries.org/film.php?id=98 ) . I will NEVER eat fast food again. It is truly scary what food processors do to our food and what they do to it again to make it palatable. Of course, McDonalds tries to down play Spurlock’s ‘prank’ by criticizing that he ate 5,000 calories per day and did not exercise. The problem with that logic is that there are people who do the same thing. According to Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food nation, his research indicates that in 2001 there were about 30,000 McDonalds and says they open about 2,000 a year. So that means there are probably more like 47,000 McDonalds today.in the U.S.

POPSThe REAL "Inconvenient Truth": Cell Phones and Bee Colony Collapse
Honey bees are in effect saying, "Can you hear us now?" The consequences of inaction on this are real and enormous. But unlike oil, coal or "carbon emissions", not even Al Gore or Obama will advocate giving up or curbing cell phones or towers, even though the hard facts on this are much more threatening to agriculture, and by consequence human life, the economy of foods, and the entire eco-system than the mythical "global warming" doomsday scenerio. Cell phones are America's and the world's unnecessary CONVENIENCE that apparently are not even being debated by the Climate people, willing to sacrifice the pollination of food crops by honey bees for cell chat. The buzz is real, but governments are not moving to regulate, and are likely too afraid of consumers who do not care about consequences any more than those who throw fast food trash out the window of their cars. There is also hard evidence of radiation from cell phones directly damaging human health.
