Dr. Britt studied the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia), and Pinochet (Chile). He found the regimes all had 14 things in common, and he calls these the identifying characteristics of fascism. The article is titled "Fascism Anyone?," and appears in Free Inquiry’s Spring 2003 issue on page 20.

Things like approving torture, holding prisoners in jail for years and years -- indefinite detention -- deprived of all legal rights, not allowed to communicate with their families who might not even know where they went, deprived of visits even from the Red Cross. It's one step at a time. It's doing things like this we've never done before -- war crimes. First to foreigners, then it seeps into doing it to your own.
