Army strong. The 2006 Kelvyn Park High School graduate served in Korea and most recently in Iraq, where she drove fuel tankers. She made her father proud. "She was the best I have. The light of my family," Juan Velez said of his only daughter. "She was living my dream . . . to be part of the military, part of the United States. To be part of something. Just to give back to the United States because this is where we are from."

United States Pushing International, Mandatory Copyright Laws. Guilty Until Proven Innocent!

"* * Mandatory prohibitions on breaking DRM, even if doing so for a lawful purpose (e.g., to make a work available to disabled people; for archival preservation; because you own the copyrighted work that is locked up with DRM)" Now that is a worriying development. Let see the Teabaggers chew on this. Nah, it's a pro-corporate treaty which enforces American will on the REST of the world, so it doesn't set off the NWO alarm bells.

China's black pop idol exposes her nation's racism
foxyarse
by foxyarse  10-31-2009    1
"Ugh. Yellow people and black people mixed together is very gross," was one representative post. And Lou's critics are incensed not only by her colour but also because she is apparently the product of an extramarital relationship. Another blogger wrote: "Numb! This bitch still has the audacity to appear on television! I don't know what to say! One cannot be shameless to this kind of level!" Lou admitted to Neteast News that the level of hostility had come as a shock. "The whole thing was a big bomb to my family and me and it caused great harm," she said. "I wish netizens could tolerate my particular parentage and let it go as soon as possible."

WARNING! Goodbye Sovereignty... Hello One World Government! - The Copenhagen Treaty December 09
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  10-30-2009    6
Enjoy your freedom WHILE it lasts! You got a little over a month and counting down. The Treaty on Climate change will effectively end the sovereignty of nations, no liberty, no democracy, no vote. This is it, heads up! Global government by December 09? Will you stand by and let freedom, justice and sovereignty be signed away for profit and control. If you haven't made provisions for you and you family now would be (a little late perhaps) good time to do so, anything could happen, what with the swine flu, the redistribution of the wealth of the rich nations to the poor, the carbon tax etc. Given the current political & economic climate it would be foolish not have some sort of preparedness plan in case TSHTF.

'On "The Wealth of Nations"' P. J. O'Rourke
merrie
by merrie  10-17-2009    1
Economic progress depends upon a trinity of individual prerogatives: pursuit of self-interest, division of labor, and freedom of trade. There is nothing inherently wrong with the pursuit of self-interest. That was Smith's best insight. To a twenty-first-century reader this hardly sounds like news. Or, rather, it sounds like everything that's in the news. These days, altruism itself is proclaimed at the top of the altruist's lungs. Certainly it's of interest to the self to be a celebrity. Bob Geldof has found a way to remain one. But for most of history, wisdom, beliefs, and mores demanded subjugation of ego, bridling of aspiration, and sacrifice of self (and, per Abraham with Isaac, of family members, if you could catch them). This meekness, like Adam Smith's production, had an end and purpose. Most people enjoyed no control over their material circumstances or even-if they were slaves or serfs-their material persons. In the doghouse of . . .

Read it all! These are crazy publicity-seekers. "authorities would need to bring a criminal case before attempting to recoup restitution costs for the thousands of dollars spent to search for the boy, an effort that involved military helicopters, a ground rescue and even a mounted posse. Officials also rerouted planes around the balloon's flight path and briefly shut down Denver International Airport. They should do just that!

Three 9/11 Heroes Die of Cancer in 5 Days
sahara
by sahara  10-15-2009    1
If passed, the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act would provide $10 billion for medical care for hundreds of first responders who have since become ill, although officially the illnesses have never been linked to the World Trade Center collapse. The act is named after a New York City Police Department detective who died from his post-9/11 ailments. “Unfortunately, it’s just going to happen more and more…I hope next week there isn’t four,” regretted Stephen Grossman. To better illustrate the pattern, the newspaper noted that firefighter John McNamara, also 44, had died of cancer last month. “These three deaths are proof that we need this bill passed today $#0151; not a year from now,” said John Feal, founder of the FealGood Foundation. “How do you get this high cluster of serious cancer in just people that worked the pile?” he said. “That isn’t a coincidence.”

Fox TV - No Shame for Beck Trivializing Holocaust
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  10-13-2009    9
People have been making money by the sack full and gaining power and recognition for generations preaching about who listeners should hate, fear, outlaw, lynch, beat to death. Hitler and Stalin have been joined by Glenn Beck, Lou Dobbs and many wannabe head haters - including an ex-governor. In a market-driven economy what's one of the best ways to respond? For me it is to let Fox and CNN know, I am not watching until things change and and recommending the same to others. No Fox, No CNN. No advertising on Fox or CNN. Will they miss me - grin? Only if several hundred thousand join with me in skipping their favorite shows on Fox and CNN. I managed to quit smoking after forty years - cold turkey - so I think I can manage without my local or national Fox, or even the shows I like on CNN until they change. How about you?

Anger in France and Poland after Polanski arrest
4ensic
by 4ensic  9-27-2009    1
At least Reuters puts the blame on the "political elite". A U.S. arrest warrant has existed since 1978 for Mr. Polanski. It's no secret that he's wanted. He travels to Switzerland, which has an extradition treaty with the U.S. and gets arrested. The elites have a major panty wad. I guess that whole "rule of law" thing doesn't apply when an artist is involved. He played the system for 31 years and got a bit too arrogant for even the Europeans.

It shakes a village: What thousands of individual economic crises mean for an entire community
Lexica
by Lexica  10-9-2009
More: Through the Marin Housing Authority, Fatooh discovered three affordable housing complexes accepting applications -- then discovered a waiting list of three years. She phoned agency after agency, with no luck. Finally someone told her she'd have a better chance getting placed if she and the family spent three months living at a campsite. Meanwhile her repossessed house in Cazadero sits empty, she says. …The TV news reminds us every night: We're in a recession. But often the camera zooms in too tight: the single family facing eviction, the single worker laid off at the plant, the single patient unable to pay for cancer treatments. The panorama of such cases remains hazy: What does joblessness, foreclosure or lack of healthcare mean for entire communities? What happens to town after town of people like Kassy Fatooh? How does a multiplicity of stories like hers tear at the patchwork of agencies and services meant to hold our communities intact?

Oakland man turns 111, insists it's no big deal
Lexica
by Lexica  10-7-2009
More: Yes, Hatch is a cool dude. Just the nicest, sharpest, spunkiest, friendliest, most capable man you'd ever want to know. Age really has nothing to do with all that, other than to provide him with a vast array of stories to pepper any conversation. Like when he used to go hunting for jack rabbits in the "country" of Castro Valley and Hayward, back before all the freeways and houses and BART. He even hunted bear in Alaska until the time he saw another hunter kill a mama bear with cubs and it broke his heart, so he hung up his shotgun. "That got me right here," he said, touching his chest. He traveled for years as a merchant marine, working on cargo ships all over the world. He taught himself Spanish when he was in Mexico City. He survived an apartment fire in 1971 in West Oakland, though he lost a couple of fingers dangling from a burning window. He worked as a blacksmith, an auto mechanic and a taxi driver, and even drove Jimmy Carter to the Oakland airport one time.
