POPSI Can Find A More Worthy Charity "But think about those numbers, think about the power of the Salvation Army. It is a massive Christian evangelical organization — with a quasi-military structure and raising $2 billion a year — and it promotes discrimination against gays and lesbians in its employment policy; at local levels of government, going so far as to threaten to close soup kitchens in New York if the city enacted domestic partnership legislation; and at the national level of government, including negotiating with the Bush administration to guarantee that faith-based groups could discriminate against gays and keep their federal funding. We can find charities more deserving of our dollars and our volunteer time."

POPSAnti-Gay Ugandan Bill raises questions of human rights As activists within the country are speaking out, the proposed law has incited widespread international criticism. Despite the fact that anti-gay sentiment in Uganda has been stoked by US Evangelical leaders, dozens of American Christian leaders signed a joint statement (see PDF) condemning the law

POPSGimme That New-Time Religion Also, from the article: Hispanics are more likely than whites to believe in yoga, spiritual energy in physical objects, astrology and the evil eye, and blacks are more likely than whites to believe in reincarnation and the evil eye. Older people (those over age 65) are less likely to agree with these kinds of beliefs compared with younger people The concept of worship is changing too as people go to services in multiple places across faiths. More than one in three (35%) adults surveyed said they attend religious services at multiple places and 24% said they attend services of different faiths. Protestants (30%) were more likely to attend services outside their domination than Catholics. More Protestants (30%) say they attend services outside their own denomination than Catholics (19%).

POPSGlobalizing the Culture Wars: U.S. Conservatives, African Churches and Homophobia
This report reveals the truth about what is going on and should be required reading for American church leaders," said Jim Winkler, the general secretary of the international public policy and social justice agency of The United Methodist Church. Full report and Executive Summary (PDF) @ clip source. Although written primarily for a U.S. audience, Globalizing the Culture Wars is certain to cause a stir in English-speaking Africa, where conservative U.S. evangelicals have for too long escaped the close scrutiny of African social justice activists and movements. Project Director Kapya Kaoma is an Anglican priest from Zambia now leading churches in the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts. A doctoral candidate at Boston University School of Theology, he has studied in evangelical schools in Zambia and the United Kingdom. ... An active campaigner for women’s reproductive rights, Kaoma is a passionate activist for social witness in the world.

POPSThe Rachel Maddow Show: U.S. Ties to Ugandan Anti-Gay Bill In a moment, we‘ll speak with Jeff Sharlet who has written extensively about the secret of Evangelical religious organization called The Family. We first started discussing The Family on this show when it emerged as a player in, not two, but three Republican sex scandals - those of South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, Nevada Senator John Ensign and the alleged sex scandal involving former Mississippi Congressman Chip Pickering. Jeff Sharlet is now reporting that there aren‘t just ties between American Evangelical Rick Warren and the “kill the gays” bill in Uganda. He reports that, in fact, the president of Uganda and the legislator who introduced the “kill the gays” bill are more than just supported by American Evangelicals. They are both members of The Family.

POPSObama ends Bush-era National Prayer Day service at White House Non-believers took heart at Obama's decision but urged him to go further. "It's not his job to tell people to pray," David Silverman, national spokesman for the organization American Atheists, told CNN. "We are very happy he did away with the George W. Bush-era celebrations and party, but we wish he wouldn't do it at all."

POPSBullock: A blessing to meet, portray a real Christian I'm not a movie-goer but I've heard good things about this one. Plus I'm glad that the actress actually spent time with the person she was going to portray. I'm sorry that most of us are not good *witnesses* for Christ but willing hearts want to learn, grow, and serve others in our own God-enabled ways. Apparently Leigh Anne Tupohy gave the Gospel and didn't necessarily need to use words. :~)

POPSPalin, Settlement Expansion and the End of the World is great news if you are one of the Protestants who do hold these beliefs. But if you are not, then you should be alarmed. I admit that I think Evangelicals get a bad rap from liberal Jews, many of whom are so repulsed by the Evangelicals' political and social conservatism that they unfairly and unwisely devalue the value of their Zionism. But supporting the settlements policy because there has to be room for all the Jews in the world to come home to Israel in advance of Armageddon? Astonishing. iven the tendency of U.S. politicians to avowedly claim religious grounding for their political beliefs I do think somewhat more scrutiny needs to be given to the issue of the extent to which evangelical figures are letting their policy views be driven by apocalyptic scenarios. Watch out, Evangelicals! Your unconditional support of Israel may just end up with Israelis seeing YOU, as the enemy. Oh, the irony... Palin for 2012, anyone? .:p

POPS Creationism vs. atheism: It's on! Was this stunt shrewd or moronic? From the first it's been hard to tell. The plan, innocuously named "Origin Into Schools," was announced this September in a video featuring Kirk Cameron, a former television child star who co-founded a ministry called Living Waters with Comfort. There's something almost pitiable about the way Cameron crows over the scheme; he truly seems to find it ingenious. He points out that the University of California at Berkeley cannot prevent the action because "their own Web site" dictates that "anyone is free to distribute noncommercial materials in any outdoor area of the campus." "Besides," he gleefully adds, "what are they really going to do? Ban 'The Origin of Species'? That would be big news! Especially when their own bookstore sells it for $29.99!"

POPSWhose God is Allah? But Christian leaders - representing a little under 10% of the population - say Malays have been using the word Allah to refer generally to God for hundreds of years. Christians are now fighting back. An Evangelical church launched a legal action in an attempt to win the right to refer to God as Allah in children's books. The Roman Catholic Church has also gone to court after its newspaper in Malaysia was threatened with the loss of its licence if it continued to use the word. Christians are turning the issue into one about how minorities are treated in Malaysia. The Christian Federation of Malaysia says the country's constitution guarantees freedom of religion, and it's asking whether that can still be meaningful if Christians are denied Bibles which use their own language. So, Allah and God are two different people/concepts, and what about יַהְוֶה ?

POPSBigotry on Display I read the entire document yesterday and found it to be riddled with false information, barely disguised hatred, and blatant prejudice. If this represents the thinking of religious leaders today than it's a sad commentary indeed.

POPSBrazil Gets an Auspicious Visitor ...and not everybody is happy. In fact, it would appear that very few people are happy. Check out the variety of groups that have mobilized to protest his arrival, as listed in the last paragraph. If anybody can be less popular that George W. Bush down here, it is Ahmadinajad.

POPSOne Reason Not To Spend 10 Minutes and 35 Seconds With John Piper He gets a "A" for his efforts at fear mongering. "As the church continues to debate the issue of homosexuality, we find ourselves facing another culture of fear. Many in the church fear those who are other, who are different, and are able to find ways to manipulate scripture to support this fear. And it certainly doesn’t help when extremely influential Christian leaders like John Piper make absolutely ridiculous statements about the connection between a freak tornado and an ELCA meeting. I have to wonder if even John Piper really believes what he has written – or whether this is a convenient way to support the discrimination and hate of the LGBT community. This is conspiratorial bunk that uses the bible as a weapon of ideology, not a source to find God's grace."

POPSA Tale Of Two Women There is a world of difference in my previous clip "Triumph Of A Dreamer", a woman who overcame many obstacles to improving her life and this tale of ingratitude. Compare the stories. Poor Sarah Palin elects to portray herself as a victim again and again as she laughs all the way to the bank. I don't know who is more pathetic--the idiots who pre-ordered this trash or Ms. Palin.

POPSHow The FCC and Liberal Churches are Scheming to Shut You Up
from staunch critics of illegal immigration. Open-borders groups have sought to marginalize, criminalize, and demonize those of us who have raised our voices for years about lax immigration enforcement " and to impose an Orwellian Fairness Doctrine-style policy on illegal alien amnesty opponents. During the presidential campaign, the National Council of La Raza launched a “We Can Stop the Hate” project to redefine tough policy criticism from the Right as “hate.” Unsurprisingly, far Left billionaire George Soros’s money is backing the “So We Might See”/National Hispanic Media Coalition effort. And remember that the Soros-funded Center for American Progress has provided the Obama White House with its Fairness Doctrine-embracing “diversity czar,” Mark Lloyd. Jeffrey Lord, who happens to belong to the United Church of Christ, reported in the American Spectator that not long after that speech, the UCC sent out a mass e-mail to its millions of members urging them.......

POPSHow absolutizing the Bible relativizes Jesus Christ When all the words of Scripture are elevated to the rank of being the very words of God, the unique word of God embodied in Jesus "in whom all the fullness of deity dwells in bodily form" (Col. 2:9) is reduced to just one source of divine revelation among many.

POPSUS founded as a Christian Nation Most of the fifty-five Founding Fathers who worked on the Constitution were members of orthodox Christian churches and many were even evangelical Christians. The first official act in the First Continental Congress was to open in Christian prayer, which ended in these words: "...the merits of Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Savior. Amen". Sounds Christian to me. Ben Franklin, at the Constitutional Convention, said: "...God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid?" John Adams stated so eloquently during this period of time that; "The general principles on which the fathers achieved Independence were ... the general principles of Christianity ... I will avow that I then believed, and now believe, that the general principles of Christianity are as etemal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God." more at source

POPSThe Asshole Behind Prop 8: The Bishop of Oakland, CA We know all this because as homosexuals and their supporters were wondering how this all came about, Cordileone gloated about his work in an interview with an obscure Catholic radio network. He bragged about how gay men and lesbians never saw him coming & called gay marriage a Satanic plot by "the Evil One" to destroy morality in the modern world. Now, Cordileone's work has been rewarded, and the Vatican has made him the most important religious figure in the East Bay. Alameda County is one of the most liberal and gay-friendly parts of the world; it arguably has the most lesbian residents in the United States, & voters here rejected Proposition 8 by almost 62 percent. & the man who leads some 400,000 Catholics from his new Lake Merritt cathedral... just got done taking the right to marry from every gay man and woman in the East Bay. Dear Bishop Sal: fuck you. Quite sincerely, A married, het Oaklander.

POPSRidiculous and False Article: Francis Scott Key Emerges from Grave, Demands His Poem Back
It is so absurd to write that Francis Scott Key would advocate for President Barack Hussein Obama and be chummy with Karl Marx. Key was a member of The Society for the Colonization of Free People of Color (a.k.a The American Colonization Society). Their goal was to emigrate all free blacks to Africa (see Liberia). The membership included Henry Clay, Andrew Jackson, Daniel Webster, and Stephen Douglas. Supreme Court Justice Bushrod Washington (nephew of George), was elected as its president. The most distinguished members of ACS were all slaveholders. The ACS raised funds and purchased the Elizabeth which sailed to West Africa in 1820. As a slaveholder, aristocrat and member of the exclusive club, Wealthy White Male Property Owners, Key would probably smack Karl Marx with a copy of the Wall Street Journal for uttering, workers of the word unite . Key was an Evangelical Episcopalian and as such, he'd burn Marx at the stake for his views on religion.

POPSLutherans to Allow Sexually Active Gays as Clergy The same-gender couples I know live in love and faithfulness and are called to proclaim the word of God as are all of us. - Rev.
