"All of them—along with many, many hundreds more—appear in my Viva la Repartee book." Pope John XXIII One of the few pontiffs in history with a rich sense of humor, Pope John XXIII once reported to an interviewer that important problems would frequently come to mind in the middle of the night, disturbing his sleep. Half awake, he'd make a mental note: "I must speak to the pope about that." "Then," he confessed, "I would be wide awake and remember—I am the pope!" Once asked by a journalist, "How many people work in the Vatican?" the pontiff pondered the question, giving the impression that he was trying to come up with an accurate estimate. Then, with a straight face, he answered: "About half." (more at the source)

Concrete that literally eats pollution.
TheCatWhisperer
by TheCatWhisperer  11-10-2006    6
If it works, then this could be a big breakthrough indeed. However, it's not like cities are going to start re-paving roads that don't need it, or demoing & rebuilding building, (or even just repainting them with this solution)... The cost would be prohibitive. So that 50% savings (just off of 15% of concrete surfaces) is a LONG way away. Plus, this definitely doesn't curb the need for changing the way we pollute...

World War III Cancelled

So it turns out that Iran stopped developing nuclear weapons in 2003, according to the new National Intelligence Estimate. It's easy to distrust the U.S. intelligence community, which not only made mistakes on Al-Qaeda and Iraq, but also told us in 2005 that Tehran was determined to build nukes. But there's at least one thing we can all be relieved about today: Imminent open warfare between the U.S. and Iran is almost certainly off the table.

"Bush F****d Up the War": said Repub Senator
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  7-18-2007    2
The findings echo similar assessments of the terror threat from British spy chiefs. They inflamed an already febrile atmosphere in Congress, where Mr Bush is haemorrhaging support from Republicans. Mr Voinovich is not the only ally of the President losing faith. Yesterday, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, owned by the hitherto loyal businessman Richard Mellon Scaife, branded the Bush administration's plans to stay the course in Iraq a "prescription for American suicide". Don't know who Richard Mellon Scaife is? He is the billionaire rightwing nutjob who funded the rightwings hitjob on President Clinton. "We're going to get Clinton," Joan Bingham, a New York publisher present at the lunch, remembers him saying. "And you'll be much happier," he said to Bingham and another Democrat at the table Who's happy now?

One in Four homeless are Veterans
pokkets
by pokkets  11-8-2007    4
Estimated at 194,254 Veterans are estimated to be homeless, or 25% of the 744,313 homeless on any given night, while they are 11% of the adult population. This must have been a conservative estimate, because I'm sure the homeless love filling out surveys and questionnaires. Of course this is down on the 250,000 20 years ago, but how many of those are still alive? A figure that shocked me is the 11% of the general adult population are Veterans. Does that take into account those on active Duty? How many Americans with 7 figure salaries are expected to serve. Of course they are vital to the ECONOMY. That is being screwed by a prodigal.

"Hours after Japan's surrender in World War II, Vietnamese Ho Chi Minh declares the independence of Vietnam from France. The proclamation paraphrased the U.S. Declaration of Independence in declaring, "All men are born equal: the Creator has given us inviolable rights, life, liberty, and happiness!" and was cheered by an enormous crowd gathered in Hanoi's Ba Dinh Square" Lest you forget. There is so much Americans still cannot know of the truth of Vietnam, wiped from the history books. too painful to know the truth even now. Check who was present for the Deceleration of Independence!!!

Background Just the facts... The average price for a gallon of gas is now $3.72, this is $.61 higher than a year ago. The U.S. Congress has acted, but in the wrong direction. Last week, the Senate voted narrowly against reversing a moratorium on oil-shale development. Federal officials and industry experts estimate that up to 1.8 trillion barrels of oil is trapped in the region's oil shale, or three times the proven reserves of Saudi Arabia. Laws and policies that restrict access to America’s abundant energy drive up the price of fuel and electricity. They cause widespread layoffs and leave workers and families struggling to survive, as the cost of everything they eat, drive, wear and do spirals higher. http://www.americansolutions.com/actioncenter/petitions/?Guid=54ec6e43-75a8-445b-aa7b-346a1e096659
