POPSI Must Be A Chauvinist
I really don't get why this story is a big deal. So a woman is officiating a college football bowl game. In the grand scheme of football games, I don't really care. But more importantly, in the grand scheme of life, why does EVERYTHING have to be gender equal? Men and women are made differently, think differently, feel differently, respond differently. I have no desire to join any "women's only" organizations, or play in women's only sports and I am sure most men feel the same. We're good with letting things be. We don't feel we're being discriminated against just because there might be a women's only activity. Do you think a man would be allowed to play in...let's say... women's tennis? Would any woman stand for it? And don't give me the silly argument that there is already men's tennis. My point is: "what if a man really wanted to play women's tennis"? If he met the height and weight requirements, could he play? How often have we seen women demand equality in men's activities? I

POPSWomen - The Original Sin Some would argue that patriarchal history is in fact responsible for the very civilization that women are now attaining the freedom to achieve equality within. The other way around we might still be living in caves. Who is really to say. Remember we are speaking here about religion.

POPSLatin America Ends Year With Major Advancements In Gay Rights
With the debacle in the Middle East brought about by the previous administration, serious questions are emerging that the U.S. now lacks the ability to project power on the international stage. Now, with Mexico City's decision on Monday to approve gay marriage, it appears that local governments in two countries steeped in conservative, Catholic tradition - and allegedly not as progressive as the United States - have taken a far more expansive view of human rights and equality than the U.S. If the U.S. cannot project military power, and we can't seem to get a grip on human rights and equality in a way that two Latin American cities have done, what can we do in this country anymore? I am ending the year on a pessimistic note, but it seems to me that the only thing we are good at anymore is consuming anything and everything we're told to, polluting the environment and yet denying the very existence of global warming, cheating the most vulnerable among us, and

POPS Anatomy of a Shakedown by Charles Krauthammer But such dreams never die. The raid on the Western treasuries is on again, but today with a new rationale to fit current ideological fashion. With socialism dead, the gigantic heist is now proposed as a sacred service of the newest religion: environmentalism. One of the major goals of the Copenhagen climate summit is another NIEO shakedown: the transfer of hundreds of billions from the industrial West to the Third World to save the planet by, for example, planting green industries in the tristes tropiques . Politically it's an idea of genius, engaging at once every left-wing erogenous zone: rich man's guilt, post-colonial guilt, environmental guilt. But the idea of shaking down the industrial democracies in the name of the environment thrives not just in the refined internationalist precincts of Copenhagen. It thrives on the national scale too.

POPS"Jus Ad Bellum" - Seven Myths That Sustain War Jus Ad Bellum - the argument of a “just war” - is among the most specious and dangerous rationalizations that can be made to justify actions since it also authorizes any nation or group to use war to pursue and justify its actions.

POPSThe Environmental Shakedown I love the Dr. He brings all the pieces together to show why we're where we are today. When the call began (whenever?) to "Get the US out of the UN & the UN out of the US", it should have been heeded. Corruption abounds and it's tentacles are in every continent. Wonder what the final conclusion was on the UN member who committed "suicide" by "jumping" from one it's top floors?

POPSGlobalizing the Culture Wars: U.S. Conservatives, African Churches and Homophobia

POPSLies and truth about equality for gays I thought this was a great juxtaposition. One religious (Jewish) bigot declaring that equality for homosexuals is deeply offensive and could destroy religious freedom and free speech... Seriously distorted world-view. The other view, also of a (Reform) Jew, is in favor of egalitarian principles, like ensuring equality and fairness for all.

POPSSarah Palin's Lesbian Friend "And if Palin’s lesbian friend were to fall in love with a lovely Russian lesbian that she could see from Alaska—and enter into an adult personal relationship with that Russian—Sarah Palin doesn’t think her lesbian friend’s lover should be able to emigrate to the United States. But, hey, at least Sarah Palin refuses to judge her lesbian friend—and that’s something, right? It’s not equality or fairness or respect or full enfranchisement, of course, but it’s… um… something."

POPS"Want to save marriage? Ban divorce," by Candace Chellew-Hodge (@revtheodyke) A good, short opinion piece by Candace Chellew-Hodge (@revtheodyke) on John Marcotte's effort to get a new, Proposition 8-like measure placed on the ballot in California to "protect traditional marriage" by making divorce illegal. After all, she points out, Jesus never mentions homosexuality, but he sure does have a problem with divorce.

POPSThe real threat to "traditional" marriage: heterosexual couples who don't think the way they're supposed to The money quote: "There is a greater expectation that women will work, men will be more involved with their children, and household duties will be more evenly shared... In essence, straight couples are 'queering' heterosexual marriage... If neither partner conforms to his or her 'unique role,' heterosexual marriage starts to look like its same-sex counterpart and illustrates that those 'unique' gendered roles aren't as unique as the bishops claim they are. If in a heterosexual marriage a man can provide nurturing and emotional sensitivity and a woman can provide leadership and effective decision-making skills, could they not bring these traits to a same-sex marriage?"

POPSUnemployment higher among men Interesting stats on men being laid off more than women in the recession. Does this make the earnings disparity between women, who average 80cents to a man's dollar, less unfair?

POPSA brief PSA on language More: You don’t have to take the brunt of it. You don’t have to deal with the negative consequences. You don’t have to face employment discrimination, street harassment, caretaker abuse, and other people’s general cluelessness about our lives. You get to sit tight in your privilege, enjoying it without even realizing you’re doing it.… We’re the ones who are putting our safety on the line trying to change the cultural system that oppresses us. Two seconds to reconsidering what you’re really trying to say? Easy. Changing other people’s deep-seated attitudes? Really damn hard. How do you think we feel when you complain that two seconds is just tooooo haaaaard for you to take on?
