POPSThumb novels: Mobile phone fiction more (at source): Astronomically popular, "thumb novels" are much decried as trash for yahori ("slow learners"). But over the past few years this trashy subculture has stormed Japanese commercial book publishing. In 2007 – keitai shosetsu's annus mirabilis – half of the top 10 fiction bestsellers in the shrinking Japanese book market originated on cellphones. Last autumn, a literary grandee joined in. Jakucho Setouchi, the Marguerite Duras of Japan, revealed herself as "Purple", the author of a keitai shosetsu about a teen's search for love entitled Tomorrow's Rainbow. Learning through the spoken word, a book or a webpage doesn't matter as long as you use the info in a positive way.

POPSThe Development That Made the Whole Web :) ... "The Digital Smiley Face Turns 25 Dan's The Wrong Advices Blog (www.thewrongadvices.com) posted this story. Constantly bombarded with flashing smiley face banner ads, I shutter at the mention of emoticons. However, this is a charming story about the first digital smiley face and I enjoyed Dan's statement, "Love them or hate them, emoticons do proved a quick and easy way to show emotion in an otherwise detached medium." You can find another interesting story on emoticons at http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/29/fashion/29emoticon.html?_r=1&oref=slogin
