It's always the woman holding you back
bignosemousie
by bignosemousie  Yesterday 10:35 PM    2
Every man imagines his wife / girlfriend / partner got the better end of the deal. She gets the life SHE wanted – it’s never realised that she feels trapped too – she gets him healthier, stronger, fitter and richer than he would be alone. So these are all benefits to her. Not to him. In a man’s topsy-turvy world he imagines he’s staying home for his cooked dinners and clean laundry every night as a favour to HER.

A tribute to Original Kasper's - history, in hot dogs
Lexica
by Lexica  12-31-2009
More (emphasis mine): Hosted by the Site Memory Collective…from John F. Kennedy University in Berkeley, “Kasper’s Stories” is a part of the group’s commitment to “exploring the changing urban landscape as seen through individual and community memories of public spaces.” In the case of Kasper’s, it’s a study of one place’s impact on its residents–both when it’s there and after it disappears. “You don’t analyze how important something like this is until it’s gone,” said Kim Campisano, one of the organizers. “And you don’t realize how important it is to have that everyday connection with the same place and people in what is a vastly changing world.” …Yaglijian, smiling and mingling for two hours, said he wanted to reopen the place . “It’s time,” he said, confident that he can get the money. “I’ve kept saying that without giving the exact year for the last few years. But this time it’ll be ready again by the end of this year or early next .” YES PLEASE

Eating healthfully can increase your food bill tenfold, says Ag Dept. study
enbar
by enbar  12-29-2009
More evidence that overhauling the U.S. health insurance system is only a small step towards making Americans healthier. If, as the study's authors conclude, " resh vegetables and fruits are rapidly becoming luxury goods" (since their prices are most strongly influenced by inflation), then we have a structural nutritional problem built into our food system. This piece is from March 2008.

Sacramento-area farmers grow heirloom wheat
Lexica
by Lexica  12-24-2009    2
More: Sonora wheat was once one of the most popular wheat varieties grown in one of the biggest wheat states in America—California. In fact, Sonora wheat from California was considered of such high quality that most of it was exported to England. The change to hammermill processing, and the corresponding change to wheat types that grow well in Midwestern conditions, were a factor in the demise of California wheat farming. Midwestern wheat is generally higher in phytates, which are bitter to the taste, which was an issue for Fox. “I hated whole wheat. It was bitter and awful, and I really preferred spelt. But I went crazy for this wheat,” she says. Fox promptly began growing Sonora wheat for seed, and just eight years later, she estimates that there are at least 15 farmers in the greater Sacramento area growing this variety, including Full Belly Farm, which offers flour from Sonora wheat at farmers’ markets and through their community-supported agriculture boxes.

Trichinosis From Raw Bear Meat Can Cause Explosive Diarrhea
fatlester
by fatlester  12-15-2009    2
According to the CDC, diagnosed cases of Trichinosis, a type of roundworm, occurred at a rate of roughly 3.5 per year in the United States. By comparison, there were an average of three serious bear attacks per year in the U.S. and Canada throughout the 1990's. It's safe to say, I won't be eating any raw bear meat anytime soon. Hopefully, I wont be eaten by a bear either!

Playing A Character
debbyski

Palin and those conservative women who aspire to be like her love living in ignorance. They have been eating, sleeping, and working in pollution so long that they not only believe that is just the way the air is, but they advocate the air is not polluted and actually good for you. They buy into that twisted kind of logic because their survival and identity depends upon it. The stress of having to pretend to be innately superior at all times and buy into this belief system is more than the human organism can tolerate so they become angry, hateful, intolerant wanna be bullies who aspire to have a Sarah Palin book under their Christmas tree. To challenge them or doubt them is akin to heresy. Too bad they are buying into the myth that states there is only one reality because it limits the search in seeking any understanding for other human beings. Sad and pathetic.

Why is marriage a civil right?
Lexica
by Lexica  11-14-2009    1
More: This is why refusing communion is not a violation of civil rights - because communion is not a civil contract, it does not confer civil rights or responsibilities, and is therefore not a matter of civil law. I will say it yet again. Your laws that say same-sex couples can't get married are the same laws that say they can't eat shrimp or cut their beards. Which is fine and well for you, but I'm going to continue to enjoy my crab louie salad bare-faced without even humoring the idea that I need to protect, defend, and preserve your "sanctity of brunch".
