Marin Urban Search & Rescue Team: Ready, willing, and able
Lexica
by Lexica  10-16-2009
To paraphrase Firefly , "What's that make them? Big damn heroes! " More: They can't just roll the pipes off because its likely there will be so much debris in a real disaster that rolling will be impossible. Instead they inflate rubber and kevlar bags, sort of ultra-balloons. The bags are attached to an air tank and when inflated, can support a huge amount of weight ranging from two tons with the smaller bag to a mammoth 37 tons using the large bag! It takes about ten minutes to free the 'grateful' dummy. The collaborative training provided by Novato Fire District, Marin USAR and the State of California Office of Emergency Services, mirrors the collaboration in the field. When disaster strikes, multiple agencies respond and they need to work seamlessly together. That's why this type of training is so important.

Quakes Follow Typhoons, Pacific Plate Swarms with 6.0+ Shakers
blueridge
by blueridge  10-7-2009    2
A violent 24 hour period of Pacific activity which followed an already violent week. 10/7 Breaking news--The Vanuatu region quakes have triggered Tsunami alert for as far as New Zealand. Earthquakes also followed on the heels of the major typhoons in both the Philippines and Taiwan, specifically. An article from Science Daily in June said this regarding typhoons and quakes: ScienceDaily (June 12, 2009) — Scientists have made the surprising finding that typhoons trigger slow earthquakes, at least in eastern Taiwan. Slow earthquakes are non-violent fault slippage events that take hours or days instead of a few brutal seconds to minutes to release their potent energy But what we have observed recently is not "slow non-violent quakes", but major ones following typhoons. There must be another reason for this strange coincidence in the Philippines and Taiwan in particular.

Up to 4,000 buried in Indonesian quake rubble
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  10-3-2009    1
"Aftershocks can be just as devastating as the initial quake," said Adjie Fachrurrazi, emergency response coordinator in Indonesia for the CARE aid organization, in a statement. "After an earthquake of this size, we know the immediate needs are going to be getting safe water, food and emergency supplies to the survivors. The question now is: How bad is it? We're hoping for the best, but the information so far is not looking good."

Invisibility Cloaks May Shield Buildings From Earthquakes
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  6-30-2009
"The conceptual cloak will be made up of several large, concentric plastic rings affixed to the Earth’s surface. In order for the destructive surface waves to pass smoothly into the plastic, the stiffness and elasticity of the rings must be very closely controlled. The waves that travel through the cloak are compressed into minuscule fluctuations in pressure and density and are able to travel along the fastest path available. The path can be molded into an arc that directs surface waves away from objects inside the cloak by tweaking the characteristics of the plastic. As soon as the waves exit the cloak, they return to their original, larger size." ....More at the site: http://www.inhabitat.com/2009/06/30/invisibility-cloaks-may-shield-buildings-from-earthquakes/

Earthquakes weaken distant faults
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  10-1-2009    1
This is according to scientists who took measurements from the fault over two decades. Reporting in the journal Nature, the team found that small "repeating earthquakes" became more frequent as the San Andreas Fault weakened. This pattern, they say, could help to forecast earthquakes in the future, something that is currently impossible.

The U.S. Geological Survey declined to say whether the two quakes were linked. "The simple answer is we can't speculate on a connection," said Carrieann Bedwell of the USGS. "Both are in highly seismic areas." The epicenters of the two temblors are about 4,700 miles (7,600 kilometers) apart.

Schwarzenegger Challenges Mother Nature To A Fight
foxyarse
by foxyarse  9-12-2009
The governor ultimately decided against his plan - although he did successfully put out a small fire by squeezing it between his bicep. Instead Schwarzenegger is going straight to the source. "Mother nature will pay. I will grab her puny ankles and shake her until money falls out." At that moment Schwarzenegger turned to a camera and said, "now that's change we can believe in."

Swarms of Earthquakes Lately
blueridge
by blueridge  8-16-2009    2
Today Indonesia had 12 quakes over 5.0 , including one of 6.7. This week Japan had a 6.7, India a 7.6, and the last 30 days includes many more within the U.S., and around the Pacific Rim. Only one article addressing this was found here: Quakes and Typhoons: What's Up with Mother Nature? Typhoon Morakot was the first to strike, slamming into Taiwan Sunday ... a 7.1-magnitude earthquake rumbled off the Japan coast, also on Sunday . On Tuesday, Japan was struck again by a magnitude 6.5 earthquake that triggered a small tsunami ..., according to news Minutes before, another earthquake had ruptured in the Indian Ocean on Tuesday, north of India's Andaman Islands . the magnitude of that temblor at 7.6.

Scientists track down source of Earth's hum
cakebelly
by cakebelly  8-11-2009    6
more: Previous studies suggested that waves from both shallow continental shelves and the deep ocean contribute to the Earth’s hum, but new data indicates otherwise. Based on measurements from a seismic observatory called the USArray EarthScope, most of the hum appears to originate from the Pacific coast of North America, with a smaller contribution from the west coast of Europe. Waves from the deep ocean don’t seem to make much hum at all. The data for this study, published Thursday in Geophysical Research Letters, was gathered from November 2006 to June 2007, so humming patterns might be different during the summer months.

Dozens of Jumbo Squid Beached After Quake--Coincidence?
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  7-19-2009
Like whale and dolphin strandings, the causes of squid beachings are a mystery. One theory is that the squid can be disoriented by rapidly changing water temperatures. "The water temperature has been a little weird lately," Staaf said. "If the squid were in really warm water, but then it suddenly got very cold, that could be confusing for them." Another possibility is that the beached squid had ingested dangerous amounts of a toxin called domoic acid.
