5 keys to getting a clip popped
egoldstein

In light of some of the recent conversations on the site about the pop-able character limit, I’ve been thinking about some of the factors that influence whether a clip gets popped. It seems to me that these are 5 factors that play a key role in determining a clip’s “pop-worthiness”

Conditional parenting
Aribeth
by Aribeth  9-18-2009    3
In 2004, two Israeli researchers, Avi Assor and Guy Roth, joined Edward L. Deci, a leading American expert on the psychology of motivation, in asking more than 100 college students whether the love they had received from their parents had seemed to depend on whether they had succeeded in school, practiced hard for sports, been considerate toward others or suppressed emotions like anger and fear. It turned out that children who received conditional approval were indeed somewhat more likely to act as the parent wanted. But compliance came at a steep price. First, these children tended to resent and dislike their parents. Second, they were apt to say that the way they acted was often due more to a “strong internal pressure” than to “a real sense of choice.” Moreover, their happiness after succeeding at something was usually short-lived, and they often felt guilty or ashamed.

What percent of US budget goes to foreign aid?
masbury
by masbury  9-29-2008    12
Most Americans drastically over-estimate it. Despite laudable recent increases in US giving to poverty, US aid as a percent of personal income is second to last among wealthy nations; most of that doesn't go to the poorest countries. We give about 25 cents per American per day ] day in foreign aid; with private giving, another dime. It's a lot, because there are a lot of us. But it's far behind the level of sacrifice made by people in most developed nations.

In Memory of Common Sense
willhelm
by willhelm  10-10-2009    3
Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student, but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, “Truth” and “Trust,” by his wife, “Discretion,” by his daughter, “Responsibility,” and

"State Secret: Thousands Secretly Sterilized"
cakebelly
by cakebelly  12-3-2008    5
Sterilized Without Her Knowledge Riddick was raped and became pregnant at the age of 13. Social workers labeled her promiscuous and too feeble-minded to ever be a responsible parent. So, after giving birth in 1968, Riddick was sterilized without being told. She learned the truth years later, when she married and tried to have more children. "They took so much away from me," Riddick said. "They took away my spirit and my soul." North Carolina sterilized close to 8,000 women in hospitals across the state. Even though the practice ended more than 30 years ago, some say the time has come to make amends. North Carolina was one of the first states out of 33 that once practiced sterilization to offer an apology. State Rep. Larry Womble is crafting a bill to provide financial reparations. Some wonder where the state will get the money. "They say, 'Well, we can't afford it,' " said Womble, a Democrat. "Well, we cannot not afford it." Riddick went on to earn a college degree

Danes Explain Why Obama Failed
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  10-3-2009    7
I don't quite see it exactly as the article expresses it. The people I have talked to, don't see it as Obama failing, as much as America in general, failing. Obama's (USA's) appearance here left many with a sense, that America somehow felt entitled to get the games, merely because they wanted them. Now they seem "in shock" because their wishes weren't accommodated, obviously disregarding the fact that Rio deserved to win. I am very happy on behalf of Rio and I think they're gonna put on a hell of a show. .:) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGfJ0_KMiro
