POPSThe Oxygen Dilemma: Can Too Much O2 Kill? I've been hearing some climate change skeptics use the argument, that CO2 is a benign gas and therefore can cause no harm to the environment. I clipped this article, to highlight, that whether or not a substance is "benign" or not, or natural, is not the issue. It's the disruption of BALANCE and concentration of various chemicals, that is the issue. Table salt is pretty non-toxic, but concentrations in the body beyond the mere 0.9 percent can kill you, which is why you'd die of dehydration if you drank sea water. We can all agree, that ordinary drinking water is probably the most benign substance we know, yet if you drink too much of it, it can kill you, too. Climate change is about the disruption of the balance of nature, not about the *toxicity* of the chemicals involved, in itself, so THIS particular argument used by skeptics is not valid. Just sayin'...

POPSA Merry Christmas for 'Health Care Command and Control Administration's' Congress
'not green enough' will be rationed. The cross enforcement of anti-pollution laws and green technologies will bring the EPA to the party as an enforcement arm tailored to regulating all manner of pollution producers. Think of banning riding mowers as creating pollution and a sedentary lifestyle, thus running afoul of the 'Green AND Obesity Police.' Want to smoke a cigar with your goombahs at the local pizzeria? Fuggedaboudit! Pizza will, of course, be banned or regulated as a major cause of obesity. Those ovens that pump out CO2 by the cubic yard have got to go, too. And cigars? Not only do they cause cancer, global warming and spew aroma pollutants, but the second hand smoke is a weapon used to assault other peoples' health. Now fur-wearing can be rightfully banned as the glorification of sport hunting among otherwise 'civilized' people. The practical implications of amassing policy-making power in one central administration is almost endless as more and more regulatory

POPSUk Anti-Rape Campaign As much as I hate to think about rape and the holiday season at the same time, I remind myself that for women, it's always the season for rape. More from the article below: "This is all great and exciting, but when I read some news coverage of the campaign it seems that the campaign's focus on the victims is misguided. Take, for example, this article from Reuters that says "Ultimately we want to prevent rape from occurring in the first pace, by arming potential victims with key advice on how to keep themselves safe." It' s great that the campaign aims to help women protect themselves (many anti-rape campaigns focus on this angle), but to me this seems like a backwards approach. Men are the principle perpetrators of rape so why not have a campaign directed at them which aims to arms them with the tools to change their attitudes toward sex and power. If men stopped raping women, women wouldn't need advice on keeping themselves safe."

POPSVan Gogh's Letters This website is a treasure! One of the great Masters of Art is revealed in his letters. A couple excerpts below: "Letter from Vincent van Gogh to Wilhelmina van Gogh (19 September 1889) ... together with that copy after Delacroix. It is splendid weather outside - but for a long time - two months to be exact - I have not left my room; I don't know why. What I need is courage, and this often fails me. And it is also a fact that since... Letter from Vincent van Gogh to Theo van Gogh (c. 10 December 1889) ... - and be sure that I think of you often, here where I spend my days more withdrawn into myself than now and then seems to me desirable. Yet I have decidedly no reason at all to complain, feeling stronger and healthier...

POPSYou Know You’re From Tennessee If… 13. You describe the first cool snap (below 70 degrees) as good pinto-bean weather. 14. A carbonated soft drink isn’t a soda, cola or pop…it’s a Coke, regardless of brand or flavor. Example: “What kinda coke you want?” 15. Fried catfish is the other white meat. 16. You understand these jokes and forward them to your friends from Tennessee (and those who just wish they were).
