POPS68 Molecules that hold the key to all Cellular Life Currently, the vast majority of medical research looks to the human genome and proteome for answers, but those answers remain elusive, and perhaps for good reason. “We have now found instances where the pathogenesis of widespread and chronic diseases can be attributed to a change in the glycome, for example, in the absence of definable changes in the genome or proteome,” Marth said, adding that, as biomedical researchers, “we need to begin to cultivate the integration of disciplines in a holistic and rigorous way in order to perceive and most effectively manipulate the biological mechanisms of health and disease.” Marth believes that biology should become more integrative both in academic and research settings. “I’m one who believes that we don’t need to sacrifice breadth of knowledge in order to acquire depth of understanding.”

POPSEinleuchtend!

POPSGene test could 'prevent' heart disease I believe genetic testing should be an option, not a requirement. That may be a good principle for adults, but the call is for testing to be done on 'at risk' children under 10. I'd be surprised if they could find anyone in the world that wasn't subject to some genetic risk or another. Still, a DNA Database is as good as a chip, or an ID card, and much better than a finger print...but I'm a cynic..or perhaps an optimist with experience.

POPSExploding chromosomes fuel research about evolution of genetic storage
Dinoflagellates are stuffed at the core with tightly compacted chromosomes, yet these organisms contain neither histones nor nucleosomes. "What takes care of neutralizing DNA, to allow chromosomes to condense?" Levi-Setti asked. "Most biology books do not tell you." Other scientists had already identified positively charged atoms called cations as neutralizing factors. They found that dinoflagellate chromosomes explode upon the removal of calcium and magnesium cations. Levi-Setti has produced the first images of the distribution of these cations in dinoflagellate chromosomes. These images verify that cations, mainly of calcium and magnesium, neutralize DNA's enormous negative charge, and further suggest a critical role in folding the protein as well. The finding raises questions about the evolution of chromosomes, Rizzo said. "Did dinoflagellates once have histones and then lost them? Or did dinoflagellates never have histones and just 'figured out' a different way to fold lar

POPSWhat Fish Are You Really Eating? Detective work by two sushi-loving high school students has shown that New York sushi restaurants and seafood markets are mislabeling their products - often selling cheaper species as more expensive varieties. The duo used a simplified genetic fingerprinting technique to look at the fish DNA and uncover the truth. The study was small, involving just 60 samples, but it's likely that these few restaurants and grocery stores aren't the only ones in on the game. Considering how many people are turning to fish these days for its health benefits, and the fact that those can vary from species to species, this should raise concern.

POPSScientists unlock Iceman's dress code Oetzi the ice man is about to become a star in the fashion industry. The technique they used to find out what his clothes were made of, can also be used in the fashion industry, or police to detect or trace fake animal materials, and to identify coats made from cat and dog hair, that are planned to be prohibited in Europe next year.

POPSStem cells could allow 'blood farms' One of the issues recently has been the shelf life of blood, where the rotation principle-first in first out can leave blood 'stale' and unsafe. There is also the fact that the contributions cannot meet the demand, and the increase in surgery that requires large volumes of blood. Transplant, and heart surgery being prime examples. They have been searching for a means of producing blood artificially, but the prospect of using stem cells, makes it more likely to be a reality. One of the most important aspects is that the red cells have no nucleus, so no nucleic DNA. A fact that can relieve many ethical, and practical problems.

POPSBigfoot Is 96% Possum But that's not the great part. I mean, a half-human, half-ape, or, less crudely, some kind of australopithacine, would be a momentous discovery, of course. But a half human, half possum? That's comic book territory.
