How John Cassavetes' Shadows changed American movies forever
zizzy
by zizzy  11-11-2009    1
more at clip source The movie immerses you in its world from the get-go. The opening credits scroll over a raucous rave-up in a cramped apartment, with revelers—white and black—boozing and singing along to an impromptu jam. Without a word of dialogue the demimonde is established—this is not Don Draper's Manhattan. Shadows centers on three siblings: Benny (Ben Carruthers), a brooding beatnik and unemployed trumpet player; Lelia (Lelia Goldoni), the innocent little sister who puts up a worldly front; and Hughie (Hugh Hurd), the oldest and a struggling jazz musician. The three are African-American, but only Hughie looks it—both Benny and Lelia are light-skinned enough to pass for white.

DIY soap – cleaning up your act
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  11-4-2009    1
Half way recipes (in which you take a pure form of soap and spruce it up) can be easy to do at home. You can use Castille soap to make several varieties of body wash. Here is one recipe: Vanilla Almond Soap 1/3 cup whole almonds 1 4-ounce bar Castille soap 1/4 cup distilled water 1 tablespoon almond oil 1/8 teaspoon vanilla essential oil Grind the almonds in a food processor or coffee grinder. Using a cheese grater or a knife, shred the bar of Castille soap. Boil the water and add the shredded soap, stirring until you get a nice gooey texture. Reduce to a simmer and then add in the almond grinds, oil and vanilla. You can spoon the soap into molds (ice cubes can make little gift soaps) and let it sit for around five hours until it hardens.

Homemade furniture polish
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  11-5-2009
I started replacing household cleansers with homemade stuff a few months ago and don’t plan on going back to the chemical soup that we have been led to believe we simply must have. To clean windows and countertops use water, vinegar, and dish detergent, for example. I just used this recipe for furniture polish yesterday and it really works. More DIY tips can be found at the site as well as at Tipnut http://tipnut.com/ and TURI http://www.turi.org/turi_lab/do_it_yourself_home_made_household_cleaner_recipes I believe the fewer chemicals we use in our everyday life the better off we are.

BioHacking: The Plot for the Next Real-life Blockbuster Thriller?
chestnut501

Solitary citizens are toiling over test-tubes, sacrificing their time and money to create brand new lifeforms - but this isn't a science fiction movie, it's a hobby. "DIY Biochemistry" sees private citizens converting their dining rooms into DNA labs. It's only a pity that Michael Crichton has passed on, because we've got the plot of his next book right here.

11 Ways To Use A Pumpkin
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  10-18-2009
More in the article . If you've never made a fresh pumpkin pie, you are missing out. And, by the way, most canned pumpkin is made of squashes, rather than actual pumpkin. Pumpkin from scratch is a bit of a pain, one has to puree it or it's a bit stringy, but it keeps well in the freezer, so it is worthwhile. I think so, anyway.

200 mph blast of air. Granted the brick was just a free standing wall. I would like to see what it does to a house. Probably very little. See the site to get instructions on how to build your own. BTW, when I was a child two adults were killed across the street from my house when a tractor tire they were filling with air exploded, so air can kill if pressured enough.

A Sydney Man, DIY Jihad author to serve nine years
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  9-25-2009
Oh, he's not a Christian? My mistake. "It beggars belief that a person of average intelligence who has devoted themselves to the study of Islam over some years would fail to recognise the nature of the material,'' she said. "The dissemination of extremist activity, connected or unconnected with a terrorist plot, is caught by the government's (anti-terror) scheme ... (because such material) is capable and is shown to foment terrorist activity.'' Khazaal was sentenced to 12 years in prison, with a non-parole period of nine years. With time already served, he will be eligible for release after August 31, 2017.

The $150 Edge-of-Space Camera: MIT Students Beat NASA On Beer-Money Budget

via Jules Crittenden Of course, all this would be pointless if the guys couldn’t find the rig when it landed, so they dropped a prepaid GPS-equipped cellphone inside the box for tracking. Total cost, including duct tape? $148. Launch Two weeks ago, on Sept. 2, at the leisurely post-breakfast hour of 11:45 a.m., the balloon was launched from Sturbridge, Massachusetts. Lee and Yeh took a road trip in order to compensate for the prevailing winds, which could have otherwise taken the balloon out onto the Atlantic, and checked in on the University of Wyoming’s balloon trajectory website to estimate the landing site. Because of spotty cellphone coverage in central Massachusetts, it was important to keep the rig in the center of the state so it could be found upon landing. Light winds meant the guys got lucky and, although the cellphone’s external antenna was buried upon landing, the fix they got as the balloon was coming down was close enough.
