Irony of Obama's Opposition
cptenaud
by cptenaud  10-6-2009    7
And now, as President, Mr. Obama consistently speaks of solving problems by using "what works" rather than employing ideological approaches. This too is reasoning and judgment, rather than resort to theory without consideration for the facts on the ground. It does not mean that the President will not consider free-market economics, on the one hand, or government intervention, on the other, but he looks for solutions that take into account the myriad of consequences rather than simply going with a principle, results be damned. What is ironic, although maybe karmicly inevitable, is that this king of reason is being confronted with logic's nemises -- emotion, belief and intentional deception. Take, for example, Mr. Obama's first acts as President. The economy was diving into a deeper recession. The financial industry was frozen. The President supported a huge rescue program.

Stunning underwater shots captured by world's top female cave diver and her team
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  10-4-2009    7
Crawling through underwater caves from Antarctica to Mexico and Florida to Bermuda, it is a good thing that Jill Heinerth is not claustrophobic It also helps that Ms Heinerth, 44, is acknowledged as the world's top female cave diver Holding the world record for distance travelled in underwater caves as well as being the first person to cave dive in an Antarctic iceberg, Ms Heinerth has been at the top of her game for 20 years An expert at crossing pitch-black freezing tunnels, full time cave photographer Ms Heinerth carries up to 300 pounds of equipment with her on each expedition Using technology more advanced than average scuba diving gear, the Florida based adventure cave diver makes use of electric heated wetsuits and unique carbon dioxide recycling aqua-lungs 'The images of me with my team from Antarctica still bring back the excitement of that unique expedition,' says Ms Heinerth, who lives in the much warmer climate of High Springs in Florida.

Immortality only 20 years away says scientist
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  9-22-2009    12
No thanks, I don't want to live forever. "Ultimately, nanobots will replace blood cells and do their work thousands of times more effectively. "Within 25 years we will be able to do an Olympic sprint for 15 minutes without taking a breath, or go scuba-diving for four hours without oxygen. "Heart-attack victims – who haven't taken advantage of widely available bionic hearts – will calmly drive to the doctors for a minor operation as their blood bots keep them alive. "Nanotechnology will extend our mental capacities to such an extent we will be able to write books within minutes. "If we want to go into virtual-reality mode, nanobots will shut down brain signals and take us wherever we want to go. Virtual sex will become commonplace. And in our daily lives, hologram like figures will pop in our brain to explain what is happening. "So we can look forward to a world where humans become cyborgs, with artificial limbs and organs."

Daniel Hannan Warns Us About Universal Health Care
merrie
by merrie  8-16-2009
 4. If your young doctor wants to be anything more than an internist or family practitioner, then the additional residency years or fellowship years begin. Again, almost no pay and no sleep. This means that the surgeon diving into your abdomen, or heart, or brain is someone who is (a) in the top two percent of our academic population and who (b) sacrificed up to 12 years of his/her life plus tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars for the privilege of making that cut " and doing it right, so that you don’t bleed out or die of an infection, and so that you have a minimal scar and maximum comfort. If medicine is no longer remunerative, there is no incentive for good people to make these kinds of sacrifices. I’ll remind you that, in the former Soviet Union, medicine was a very devalued profession. It was harder work than most other jobs and, because it was essentially uncompensated, no one wanted to do it. Let’s talk about the doctors under Obama Care bookworm room

Hillary Clinton Outburst Not Silent, But Deadly
foxyarse
by foxyarse  8-15-2009
A live radio broadcast suggests it was initially thought to be heavy machine gun fire, which had people diving under their seats until the commentator responded, "GOOD LORD! What's that SMELL...???" While describing the green fog drifting towards the crowd, mayhem could be heard in the background with shouts of "My eyes," and "It BURNS, it BURNS!" Several dozen people were overcome by the fumes and had to be hospitalized overnight. Scores of others remain in critical condition with injuries ranging from chemical burns to concussions. While it is agreed that Hillary should be allowed to toot her own horn without having to constantly be compared to her husband, Bill, it is also agreed that she probably shouldn't have popped off a bun shaker like that in public. "A blast on the butt bugle of that magnitude probably should have waited until she was off-camera," said one reporter who declined to be identified. One observer expressed amazement that Mrs. Clinton didn't COMPLETELY expel
