POPSJoe the Plumber May Lose His Right to Vote.
Republican Joe might lose his right to vote due to another tactic of Republican voter suppression. Why? Because he name is misspelled. Misspelled by an election official when he registered. Misspelled by one letter. As this clip says: "disenfranchisement by typo." This happen to Jose Lopez-Sandin. The election official typed in his name as 'Joseph." This happen to Anne Nguyen. The election official typed her name as: "Ann." You would think such a thing would be no problem. No. You would think it could be corrected, right now, a few weeks before the elections; or even right there at the voting place. No. So, at least, such a voter could fill out a 'provisional ballot' and that solves the problem. No. Provisional ballots get rejected at an extremely high rate. You think stupid things like this (also, like having your home address with a typo), you would think the law would be changed. No. Republicans like this type of voter suppression that mainl

POPSPicture ID to Vote Its a very deliberate effort to make sure that the deceased and the illegal immigrants get their "vote".

POPSMillions Without a Voice of the Vote If I hadn't been pardoned by Pres. Gerald Ford (bless the man) for my Fed. conviction of refusal to serve in the Military in protest of the Vietnam war in '70, I wouldn't be voting now. Some would probably say I don't deserve to vote because I'm a refusenik...but then those people are....well...wrong!

POPSDeficiencies in right-wing patriotism The last example is especially strange -- despairing about the political culture of the South in the 1920's, where disenfranchisement, lynching, and even slavery were routine practices, is a sign of insufficent patriotism? If that doesn't show the deficiencies of the right's style of patriotism, nothing does. Via Matt Yglesias

POPSANOTHER STOLEN ELECTION ???? The battle is already raging. Voter suppression and voter fraud, accusations going both ways. When will we have a nationwide, one person one vote system? When will each vote be accounted for and popular vote becomes the norm?

POPSColbert smokes out political ickiness According to the book Independent Nation, 40 percent of American voters (and 44 percent of those between ages 18 and 29) in 2000 called themselves Independents, and the number has been growing steadily for some time. How has the two-party grip become an immovable object when so many people have jumped overboard or never climbed onto the boat? How can 16 people reject a candidate based upon his occupation? Movie stars get elected. TV isn't an option - Fred Thompson, you can't run.

POPSFlorida Vote Suppression: Back in Business
A newspaper investigation found that the measure resulted in tens of thousands of voters being rejected, the overwhelming majority of them minorities. Back in December, a district court agreed with the argument by the groups -- the NAACP, the Haitian-American Grassroots Coalition, and Southwest Voter Registration Education Project -- that the law ought to be halted from going into effect while the lawsuit was decided. That decision was overturned yesterday. “Yesterday’s ruling by the appellate court represents a setback for all eligible Floridians, particularly voters of color, who wish to register to vote and participate in the upcoming presidential elections,” said Elizabeth Westfall of Advancement Project ... But Justin Levitt, counsel at the Brennan Center for Justice, said that the suit would go on and that “the trial court must now consider whether disenfranchising thousands of eligible citizens because of typos, is consistent with the U.S. Constitution.”

POPSAnother Lawsuit Demanding Verification of Obama’s Citizenship Status The complaint seeks specifically that the office of the Washington Secretary of State verify and certify that Mr. Obama is or is not a "natural born" citizen by producing original or certified verifiable official documents. The lawsuit argues that this certification should take place before the election to preclude a constitutional crisis and likely civil unrest should such certification, after the election, prove that Mr. Obama was not qualified for office. The Complaint argues that the Secretary of State has the authority and duty to not only certify the voters but also and most importantly the candidates and in so doing prevent the wholesale disenfranchisement of voters who would had had an opportunity to choose from qualified candidates had the certification preceded the election process. At this point, Mr. Obama has not allowed independent or official access to his birth records nor supporting hospital records.

POPSMillions Without A Voice Voter disenfranchisement is something that must be gotten rid of. When a person commits a crime, and is sentenced to prison or jail, they do not become less of a citizen. Their crime is being paid for with the loss of their physical freedom, but their citizenship is not taken away from them as part of it. It is only the Republican party that benefits from the use of voter disenfranchisement, and they constantly fight any effort to do away with this practice. In Florida, for example, it was demonstrated as to how tens of thousands of men were disenfranchised from voting by the manipulation of names in the prison registries. This is an undemocratic process and it must be dealt with, if we want to remain the so-called beacon of Democracy throughout the world. What a huge guffaw that is.
