POPSChild Porn Fears Scupper Airport ‘Nude X-ray’ Scans The Rapiscan works by beaming electromagnetic waves on to passengers as they stand in a booth, creating a virtual three-dimensional black-and-white ‘naked’ image from the reflected energy and sending it to a computer monitor elsewhere in the airport where it is examined by a security officer. The whole process takes only about 20 seconds and then the image is deleted. But the scans show every contour of people’s bodies – even revealing breast implants – which some may find intrusive.

POPSAmerican Casino: A Documentary About the Home-Mortgage Crisis more @ clip source the Cockburns meet one guy in "American Casino" who understands the whole mess better than most, a California real estate investor named Jeff Greene who smelled the end of the housing bubble around 2006 and bet $1 billion against the mid-decade exuberance of Wall Street. Sitting in his walled and gated beach compound in Malibu, Greene calmly tells the camera that the opportunity for his successful hedge bet (which has yielded $500 million so far) involved massive pain for millions of homeowners.

POPSDisaster: Tyler Perry to Write, Prouduce and Directed Ntozake Shange's Choreopoem For Colored Girls
Jezebel's Latoya Peterson had a similar reaction to the news, asking "Is Tyler Perry the Right Man to Tell Black Women's Stories?" Directing? Fine. Producing? Cool. But writing and adapting it? From someone who writes flat, two-dimensional woman characters in all of his work? Even under the best of circumstances, I would be skeptical of a black man tackling a project like this. To bring Shange's vision to light would take an understanding of why this work of art is so deeply intertwined with black women's articulation of their own struggles under racist, patriarchal oppression — something that unfortunately, many still deny to this day. Black women's voices are often lost in discussions of race (because all the blacks are men) and discussions of gender (because all women are white) and Ntozake Shange was beyond brave to put down all of these ideas and present them for public consumption even in the face of heavy criticism from black men when the play was released.[

POPSLearning to Live with Islam by Mark Steyn Ah, right. That's the big worry, is it? If you're wondering why the link above doesn't go to Lucy Cockcroft's report itself, that's because the Telegraph's original story appears to have suddenly gone missing. Funny how that happens when the subject under discussion is Islam. I would imagine Sebastian Faulks was asked a straightforward question and gave an honest answer. Lux et veritas ("Light and Truth"), as they used to say at Yale. But I would bet that, in the long run, the Zakaria approach will prevail. (Full disclosure: Sebastian came to stay at my pad in New Hampshire to research a novel partly set in my neighborhood. Aside from a blazingly vivid description of the breakfasts I made him, don't pick it up if you're looking for glimpses of real life chez Steyn: He turned me into a woman and had sex with me. I thought of issuing a fatwa and burning down his publishers, but I'm not the type to make a fuss.)

POPS... 2D barcode ad campaign ... A few years ago I was shown an application that could generate URLs from pictures of a company's logos. We subsequently found ourselves discussing the possibility of "recognizing" Chinese and Japanese characters this way, in order to help western tourists. International road signs could also be "translated". Recently, it has become possible to display a "boarding pass" bar code on your cell phone at the airport. Obviously these types of applications are now starting to emerge (finally).

POPSSat Marks the Spot, Uncovers Pirate Weapons Haul In parallel, satellite imagery captured from southern Sudan showed tracked vehicles, parked under camouflage, at a Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) compound northeast of Juba, the capital of South Sudan. Jane’s observed that SPLA attempts to conceal the location “were deliberate and masterful, but dimensional analysis, tracked-vehicle scarring and the staging of three vehicles in a tactical perimeter established the concealed vehicles as tanks.” All told, Jane’s estimates that South Sudan has ordered around 100 main battle tanks. Observers have worried that an arms race is now under way between the Khartoum government and the government of South Sudan. A comprehensive peace deal was reached in 2005 after two decades of civil war, but that agreement has recently frayed. A referendum in 2011 opens the possibility that South Sudan may secede
