NASA Launches Delta II Rocket
merrie
by merrie  9-25-2009
The latest Air Force weather forecast offers a 70-percent chance of conditions good enough for liftoff during the one-hour window, with cumulus clouds and showers again the main concern. Heavy clouds moving in from the Atlantic Ocean scrubbed a first launch attempt Wednesday. A second attempt was planned this morning, but a leak from fuel line at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's Launch Complex 17B prompted another delay. Engineers traced the leak to a corroded weld, located beneath the launch pad, in the line through which nearly 10,000 gallons of RP-1 rocket fuel will be pumped from a storage tank to the rocket. The weld was repaired quickly enough to limit the delay to one day, and NASA says the rocket and spacecraft are ready to fly.

Shadow Wars

"The similarities between Gates' proposals and the strategy adopted by the Kennedy administration are too great to ignore," notes Nation defense correspondent Michael Klare. These similarities include "a shift in focus toward unconventional conflict in the Third World." Gates' budget would increase the number of SOFs by 2,800, build more drones like the Predator and its bigger, more lethal cousin, the Reaper, and enhance the rapid movement of troops and equipment. All of this is part of General David Petraeus's counterinsurgency doctrine. The concept is hardly new. The units are different than they were 50 years ago - Navy SEALS and Delta Force have replaced Green Berets - but the philosophy is the same. And while the public face of counterinsurgency is winning "hearts and minds" by building schools and digging wells, its core is 3AM raids and Hellfire missiles.

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Ca.) Calls On Governator To Resign For Putting Fish Ahead Of Farmers
merrie
by merrie  5-9-2009
delivered a speech on the water crisis in San Joaquin Valley that Nunes described as "little more than lip service and a rehash of what he has said on the subject for years." The lackluster speech, "was kind of the last straw in Nunes' view of how the governor has handled this crisis," Andrew House, his spokesman, said. Nunes made the resignation call without consulting with any other congressional lawmakers or his own leadership, said House. "We see this as an urgent issue that needs to be resolved," House said. "The pumps need to be turned on"

US Media Silent as Israeli Rushes Cockpit on US Flight
blueridge
by blueridge  4-25-2009    2
There is a virtual media blackout on this event, which if a Muslim had done would have been loaded with speculation, suspicion of terrorism, details on the identify of the man and other details absolutely missing from these two news articles, the Jerusalem Post and Reuters UK. Is it because the man is an Israeli that there is a quick dismissal of terrorism (in both articles) and absolutely no information about the man or even detail of what he was doing? All we get here is either "unruly" or "rowdy"--but he rushed the cockpit doors! Why? This story smells of being managed and deliberately played down. Why could Logan Airport "not confirm" the event? Why the great hush? We need to know more. Note that with all the talk of "air security" on "international flights", yet this one from New York to Israel (highest risk) apparently had no US Air Marshalls, and passengers subdued the man whom the media refuses to identify.

U.S. Military Prepared With Battle Plans For Somalia Pirates: Intelligence Sources
merrie
by merrie  4-11-2009
WASHINGTON - U.S. military commanders have already prepared battle plans for ending the scourge of piracy on the high seas off Somalia if President Obama pulls the trigger, sources told the Daily News Wednesday. A U.S. intelligence official, though dismissive of the pirates having any terrorism links, said "there is a more intense focus" now on these criminal gangs. America's stealthiest warriors have been involved in combat operations in the Horn of Africa for years - operating from secret bases in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia and Manda Bay, Kenya.

October Surprises In History
merrie
by merrie  10-13-2008    1
During October 1962, the United States and the Soviet Union came to the brink of war over nuclear-armed missiles that Nikita Khrushchev had shipped to Cuba. Those who believe that this month's collapse of global financial markets is an unprecedented disaster need to study history. In 1987, Oct. 19 became known as "Black Monday," as Wall Street investors watched the market nose-dive 22 percent and lose $500 billion in value in a single trading session -- still the biggest one-day loss of value in history. The 23rd of this month is the 25th anniversary of the attack on the U.S. Marine headquarters in Beirut, Lebanon -- a radical Islamic suicide attack that killed 241 Americans. Fifteen years ago this month, there was a 19-hour gunfight in Mogadishu, Somalia, which claimed the lives of 18 U.S. Army Rangers and Delta Force personnel.

Delta Force officer: US officials stopped plans to kill bin Laden
rmowery
by rmowery  10-7-2008    4
This is the 2nd guy I have heard claim this. The other was a CIA operative who spoke at an event and also has a book. The stories are pretty similar. I guess Bush and crew figured without a bad guy to chase, the war would be short, so let Bin Laden out there so we can expand the war. One reason why I could never take orders - if I had the bad guy in sight - I would take em out!

Nigerian militants halt oil war after one week
tommy2balmy
by tommy2balmy  9-22-2008
A spokesman for the joint military taskforce, which polices the Niger Delta, cautiously welcomed Mend's move. "We are hoping it will not be another tactical deception which we have already prepared to contend," Lt Col Sagir Musa told Reuters news agency. The attacks forced oil giant Shell to declare a force majeure on Saturday - which frees it from contractual obligations - on crude oil shipments from its Niger Delta facilities. Nigeria's oil production has been cut by 20% because of unrest in the region over the past few years.

People are dying by the thousands in Burma and all the government can think of is protecting itself from a hostile people demanding change. I am praying for that very uprising to take place and this self-serving junta military government gets sent packing. I am sure these rulers are getting three squares a day and then some.
