Does Your Cat Eat Strange Things?
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  10-9-2009    5
Genetic predisposition ---- wool sucking, is seen more frequently in Siamese and Birman cats. Environmental factors. Is the cat bored or seeking attention? Compulsive disorder. Once other possibilities are ruled out, some pet behavioralists start to look into the possibility of compulsive disorder. munching on live power cords can be hazardous to a cat’s health–but the other danger is that ingested materials can get stuck in your cat’s stomach or intestine, which can obstruct the passage of food and may cut off the blood supply to organs–either scenario can be fatal As well, many houseplants are toxic to cats; chewing or eating these plants can have mild symptoms as well as fatality. If your cat has a history of ingesting non-food items and becomes lethargic, vomits, or displays other concerning behavior, take them to your veterinarian immediately See the ASPCA’s full list of plants toxic to cats More at the site

Why do we hate Good-byes?
Aribeth
by Aribeth  8-16-2009    3
I see you seeing me and I exist. I see you seeing me see you and we exist. Mutual re-cognition is the glue that holds us together, not merely as friends, but as individual selves. Good-byes are poignant preludes to the leave-takings and withdrawals that deprive our psyches of the sustenance they need to maintain our selfhood. As such, every good-bye is a premonition of disintegration, a foretaste of death, another step on the path to "adieu." Have you noticed that old folks tell the same stories over and over? They are desperately trying to shore up identities that, because of a paucity of recognition, are breaking down. By telling us their stories, they are staving off the disintegration of self, one day at a time. You can't really blame them--their struggle is at once heroic and tragic. One day, you too may need a comprehending ear to offset the recognition deficiencies that plague old-age... <<

Ehrenreich: Recession wiping out black middle class
masbury
by masbury  8-4-2009    3
And not because of cultural values, which declined far more precipitously among whites. "Wall Street greed" created an unemployment rate among black families rising at four times that among white ones - "greatest loss of wealth for people of color in modern U.S. history." It's a recession among white families, but a full-blown depression among people of color.

 3) Excitotoxins -- aspartame, monosodium glutamate and others (see below). These neurotoxic chemical additives directly harm nerve cells, over-exciting them to the point of cell death, according to Dr. Russell Blaylock. They're found in diet soda, canned soup, salad dressing, breakfast sausage and even many manufactured vegetarian foods. They're used to add flavor to over-processed, boring foods that have had the life cooked out of them.

The destruction of the black middle class
Lexica
by Lexica  8-4-2009    1
More: Yet in the depths of this African American depression, some commentators, black as well as white, are still obsessing about the supposed cultural deficiencies of the black community. In a December op-ed in the Washington Post, Kay Hymowitz blamed black economic woes on the fact that 70 percent of black children are born to single mothers, not noticing that the white two-parent family has actually declined at a faster rate than the black two-parent family. The share of black children living in a single parent home increased by 155 percent between 1960 to 2006, while the share of white children living in single parent homes increased by a staggering 229 percent. Just last month on NPR, commentator Juan Williams dismissed the NAACP…The fact that there is an ongoing recession disproportionately affecting the African American middle class – and brought on by Wall Street greed rather than "ghetto" values – seems to have eluded him.

Peanut-Plant Salmonella Brings Calls For Food Safety Reform
merrie
by merrie  2-13-2009
•Major foodmakers relied on audits that PCA paid for to guarantee that their processes were good . Private labs that tested products for contamination and found positives gave that information only to the company — the typical industry practice — because there are no laws that they inform regulators. The FDA's Stephen Sundlof, director of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, told lawmakers the FDA wanted new powers, specifically the right to receive internal test results during routine FDA inspections. •PCA's plant in Texas went unlicensed and uninspected for years because the state didn't know it was there. PCA's Georgia plant has been closed for weeks. The Texas plant closed Monday after salmonella was found there, too. An FDA inspection of the Blakely plant last month — after the outbreak was underway — revealed PCA repeatedly knew in 2007 and 2008 that it had product testing positive for salmonella.

Deficiencies in right-wing patriotism
jklugman
by jklugman  7-3-2008    3
The last example is especially strange -- despairing about the political culture of the South in the 1920's, where disenfranchisement, lynching, and even slavery were routine practices, is a sign of insufficent patriotism? If that doesn't show the deficiencies of the right's style of patriotism, nothing does. Via Matt Yglesias
