Crooked Climatologists Drop “Cold” Weather Stations In A Year
merrie
by merrie  Yesterday 6:11 AM    4
Absent any public statement from climatolgists for such a strange act, I can only speculate that this a deliberate attempt to cause an artificial warming of the data set. I can think of no other valid scientific reason. Would someone please ask GCHN to make a public statement as to why they tried to secretly “lose” weather stations when surely more data is better than less? Northwest Flight 253: An al-Qaeda Linked Attempted Act of Terror
merrie
by merrie  12-25-2009    5
according to a law enforcement official. The suspect told authorities that he had explosive powder taped to his leg and used a syringe of chemicals to mix with the powder that was to cause explosion. This is of concert because it is a method of mixing that is consistent with terror techniques. The suspect traveled from Nigeria to Amsterdam and then Detroit. Fortunately, the man suffered second-degree burns, consistent with fireworks or low-level explosives. The Airbus A330-300, a twin-engine jet, was carrying 278 passengers. Move to National ID Cards Delayed
merrie
by merrie  12-15-2009    2
according to the American Civil Liberties Union. About half the states oppose the mandate, or have said they would never comply. Beginning Jan.1, the law was supposed to have blocked anybody from boarding a plane using their driver’s license as ID if their resident state did not comport with the Real ID program. But the Department of Homeland Security is set to extend, for at least a year, the deadline of the Real ID program that has raised the ire of privacy advocates. Homeland Security officials point to the 9/11 hijackers’ ability to get driver’s licenses in Virginia using false information as justification for the proposed $24 billion program. The American Civil Liberties Union and the Electronic Frontier Foundation suggest the plan is misguided, and might pave the way for requiring such IDs to vote or purchase prescription drugs. “Our biggest concern is that it is a national ID card. It changes the relationship between the citizen and the state,”

Purloined Climate Emails: Rancor Comes to Light
merrie
by merrie  11-22-2009    1
"This is horrible," said Pat Michaels, a climate scientist at the Cato Institute in Washington who is mentioned negatively in the emails. "This is what everyone feared. Over the years, it has become increasingly difficult for anyone who does not view global warming as an end-of-the-world issue to publish papers. This isn't questionable practice, this is unethical." John Christy, a scientist at the University of Alabama at Huntsville who was attacked in the emails, said, "It's disconcerting to realize that legislative actions this nation is preparing to take, and which will cost trillions of dollars, are based upon a view of climate that has not been completely scientifically tested -- but rather orchestrated." In the emails, which date to 1996, researchers in the U.S. and the U.K. repeatedly take issue with climate research at odds with their own findings.

NOAA: new ocean database spans to 1800 19 11 2009 Bill Illis and Bob Tisdale will likely make use of this. h/t to WUWT reader Chris D. NOAA Releases Expanded World Ocean Database http://bit.ly/4T04zq NOAA today released the World Ocean Database 2009, the largest, most comprehensive collection of scientific information about the oceans with records dating as far back as 1800. This product is part of the climate services provided by NOAA. The 2009 database, updated from the 2005 edition, is significantly larger providing approximately 9.1 million temperature profiles and 3.5 million salinity reports. The 2009 database also captures 29 categories of scientific information from the oceans, including oxygen levels and chemical tracers, plus information on gases and isotopes that can be used to trace the movement of ocean currents. “There is now more data about the global oceans than ever before,” said Sydney Levitus, director of the World Data Center for Oceanog

I tested WolframAlpha and True Knowledge today. I found both very impressive they both gave me correct answers, Wolfram had a few problems but most probably because of traffic to the site They are not search engines, Wolfram computes answers not stock answers from a database but on the fly , True Knowledge had a more polished feel to it but I guess it has been around a bit longer. The detailed answers in WolframAlpha was impressive asking about the GDP of Australia and True Knowledge gave correct answers about OpenSim.

How Last.fm inspired a scientific breakthrough
Fast T friend
by Fast T friend  9-29-2009
How does it work? At the basic level, students can "drag and drop" research papers into the site at mendeley.com, which automatically extracts data, keywords, cited references, etc, thereby creating a searchable database and saving countless hours of work. That in itself is great, but now the Last.fm bit kicks in, enabling users to collaborate with researchers around the world, whose existence they might not know about until Mendeley's algorithms find, say, that they are the most-read person in Japan in their niche specialism. You can recommend other people's papers and see how many people are reading yours, which you can't do in Nature and Science. Mendeley says that instead of waiting for papers to be published after a lengthy procedure of acquiring citations, they could move to a regime of "real-time" citations, thereby greatly reducing the time taken for research to be applied in the real world and actually boost economic growth. There are lots of research archives. For the physica
