Kremlin Unleashes "Mafia-on-Steroids" Style Chechen Thugs
merrie
by merrie  8-20-2008    2
........continued........ to disband the unit. The generals refused. At the time, their stubborn support for the outlaw Yamadaev Brothers seemed baffling - a quiet Chechnya was a longstanding Russian goal. But last week, it all made sense: Putin's military, which had been planning the invasion of Georgia for many months, intended to unleash the worst criminals in uniform it had on the Georgian people. Why? Two reasons: First, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin wants the Georgians to suffer - to really suffer. And Chechens are the world's subject-matter experts in atrocities. Second, this gives the Russian army itself a veil of deniability: When Putin's spokesmen insist that the Russian military isn't involved in the worst savagery in Georgia, they're technically telling the truth (if we don't count air attacks and artillery bombardments), since the Chechen thugs on their payroll are on the job.

Just when I think I can't be surprised by laws coming out of California, they go and prove me wrong. So they go and tell Home Depot that they must support crime by making cushy quarters for criminals and Home Depot says okay? Oh well, Lowe's is closer to home anyway.

Cybercrime Gang Suddenly Vanishes From Web
merrie
by merrie  11-15-2007
A report from Symantec, the online security firm, alleges that the RBN has links with the criminal underground and government in Russia. However, in recent days huge numbers of RBN-hosted sites have disappeared from the Web, leading analysts to speculate that the group is revamping its business model. "RBN is reorganizing," said Raimund Genes, the chief technology officer of Trend Micro, a security group that has traced attacks by the RBN on corporate and government sites across Europe and US back to servers based in Panama. One reason is thought to be the recent threats by Russian authorities to impose tougher penalties on Internet criminals. Another was that large legitimate Internet service providers — which the RBN relies on to provide it with Internet access — have dropped it as a customer as its activities became more and more notorious

Computer visuses hit one million
pokkets
by pokkets  8-6-2008    2
They say it is due to an increasingly professional digital criminal underground. Doesn't that just mean they're making increasing amounts of money? Looks like Vista is as infectious as Windows has ever been. I suppose it pays to become more well versed on the capability, and mechanisms of computer viruses, and watch out for them in addition to relying on antivirus programs. If my programs have found a virus trojan etc, I can't delete it until I've found out what I can about it. I don't remember having any real trouble since I started using firefox, but I'd be surprised if any could compete with some of the operator errors I've had to fix. It can be hard to fix something when the answer can be found on line, and the computer won't boot.

Internet Design Flaw Makes Email Vulnerable, Too
bmeuppls
by bmeuppls  8-7-2008
While some details leaked out early — security researchers accurately guessed parts of Kaminsky’s discovery — he was able to keep a few juicy bits secret until the talk. One of those was the susceptibility of many e-mail servers to the DNS vulnerability, an opening that gives criminals a way to plant themselves in the middle of the transmission from the sender to the recipient and redirect messages to their own servers, Kaminsky said. The result: criminals have a way not only to comb through the contents of those messages, but also to gain access to other password-protected Web sites the victims belong to. That’s because most sites have a feature that allows members to retrieve their passwords by e-mail if they’ve forgotten them. If a criminal has access to the account where that message is sent, he can then begin snooping on the contents of that account, from e-mail, to banking, to retailer sites.

Goldwater Quotes
sahara
by sahara  8-3-2008    3
“Where is the politician who has not promised to fight to the death for lower taxes- and who has not proceeded to vote for the very spending projects that make tax cuts impossible?" “It's political Daddyism and it's as old as demagogues and despotism.” “The rights that we have under the Constitution covers anything we want to do, as long as its not harmful. I can't see any way in the world that being a gay can cause damage to somebody else,” If I had inherited the mess that Johnson got into, I would have said to North Vietnam, by dropping leaflets out of B-52s, 'You quit the war in three days or the next time these babies come over there going to drop some big bombs on you.' And I'd make a swamp out of North Vietnam ... I'd rather kill a hell of a lot of North Vietnamese than one American and we've lost enough of them,”
