S&M Porn Illegal-Real Life Torture-OK!
ratilfar
by ratilfar  10-6-2008    3
But for our highest government officials, including the ones responsible for this prosecution, we have a different story altogether. In 2002, the Bush DOJ radically re-defined "torture" and illegal treatment of detainees to exclude anything that falls short of "the pain accompanying serious physical injury, such as organ failure, impairment of bodily function, or even death." The DOJ's John Yoo even decreed that the President could legally order "'scalding water, corrosive acid or caustic substance' thrown on a prisoner" and possibly even "slitting an ear, nose or lip, or disabling a tongue or limb."

Royal Dutch Shell to go to Trail for Complicity in Torture and Murder of Nigerian Protesters
zizzy
by zizzy  Yesterday 4:32 PM    1
Nigeria has been chief among Shell’s assets for many years. Critics charge that with the aim of production at any cost, regardless of the damage to the surrounding people and land, Shell disrupted thousands of lives and wreaked havoc on the environment. In the early 1990’s, the people of Nigeria began to protest. Shell made payments and provided arms to security forces that they knew to be abusive to local communities. The military government violently repressed the demonstrations and arrested and bribed witnesses. Nine leaders of the demonstrations were murdered, including the aforementioned well-known activist and writer, Ken Saro-Wiwa.

Indicting the hacker who broke into Sarah Palin's private email - Harpers.org
enbar
by enbar  10-8-2008    4
The DOJ has mounted an extraordinary case against the hacker who revealed Sarah Palin's apparent systematic violation of the Open Records Act (by using a private email address to conduct government business). Given that the DOJ normally doesn't care much about cyber-crime, one has to wonder how the decision to allocate those resources was made.

by kkcapricorn  5-5-2008    1
"I'm pleasantly astounded by these kids today," said Arthrell, a teacher in the Cleveland City Schools. "They're really making a stand for a better world ... This is democracy's finest moment, when people take the initiative to change something on their own." There is an eerie similarity between 1970 and 2008. While I searched for yesterdays clip, I found articles about Viet Nam casualties, civilian deaths, Nixon's crimes. Substitute Iraq for Viet Nam and it all seems the same.

How much more so is Palin who SPOKE at (and who's HUSBAND was a recent member of) the AK Secessionist Party? Read about their platform ... in their own words!

Republican Rallies Now Sound like the KKK
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  10-8-2008    13
The clip from the New York Times reports someone at a Palin rally urging killing Barrack Obama, others calling Obama a 'traitor," -- Palin associating him with domestic terrorist...and an Afro-American TV reporter being hassled by the crowd. If we let these Republicans win again these are the types of people we'd be continuing to let rule and mislead our country. I urge their defeat not just in the elections next month, but the elections after that and the election after that until their party is driven into extinction. This will not only help our country but "send the message," that you shouldn't mislead and lie a nation into war, you can't commit war crimes, you can't shred the Constitution, you can't destroy our economy and give away money to the banks while people life savings are stolen. KKK America in power again? Not on my watch. Not while I still have breath. And I hope, sincerely hope, you feel the same. Vote Obama. Defeat Republicans.

McCain's Double Standard
spirithiker
by spirithiker  10-8-2008
If McCain wants to bash Obama for his occasional appearances on the same board with Ayers, a 1970's political activist who Obama disclaims friendship with, then he needs to examine his admitted long-time friendship to a government operative who was in the thick of the biggest political scandal in American history - and one of the greatest threats to the rule of law, G. Gordon Liddy. Both Ayers and Liddy say they have no regrets for what they did. Both served prison terms for their actions. Liddy, a radio talk show host, gives the advice: "if the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms comes to disarm you, resist them with arms. Go for a head shot, they're going to be wearing bulletproof vests. Kill the sons of bitches." Ayers, since imprisonment, has spent his time helping the poor and disadvantaged. McCain thinks Obama should apologize for associating with a criminal extremist. To which Obama might reply: After you.

All Polls Indicate: Obama Wins Second Debate
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  10-8-2008    1
Poll numbers and respectable expert opinion is overwhelming - but Obama's growing lead in the Electoral Collage growing by leaps and bounds. He's now estimated to have 264 electoral votes while McCain is estimated to only have less than 180. Yet a lot of talking heads yawn, say it was boring, or pretend that the baseball play-offs are more important (an effort at trivializing Obama's victories) -- and they continue to report smear and slander advertising campaigns against Obama as if it was news. As if a womanizer, crap shooter, ego manic ex-fly boy who confessed to war crimes in Vietnam and pleaded for special treatment when a POW is a better choice? There were real heroes in Vietnam but he wasn't one of them. And despite Vietnam being another undeclared war built on lies a soldier is suppose to be loyal and not give aid to the enemy. At least the smear, above, is based on truth; and we can't lose this election because Republican throw more *hit. BTW, debate a bit b

Judge Orders Gitmo Prisoners Released!
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  10-7-2008
Thank God. Seeing my country involved in arresting people without cause, not allowing them legal representation, communication with family, no visits from the International Red Cross, not giving them their day in court, holding them for 'indefinite detention," keeping them imprisoned -- in this case -- for seven years -- and documented torture and abuse of such prisoners -- it's all pretty disgusting. And more disgusting that these prisoners were also used for propaganda about how these alleged evil men were out to harm us. And disgusting that thick-headed rednecks, neocon neofascist, and other warmongers went around waving flags about all this and claiming "God was on their side." -- and accusing us as the one's being 'unpatriotic,' when we were the most patriotic of all. What sickness! What lies! DEFEAT ALL REPUBLICANS is now Step #1 Step #2 is seeing Bush and Cheney in jail; and all those who aided and abetted their crimes. The good news? -- this can be done.

Ruffled Feathers or Legal Bowel Movement?

With so many "high profile" crimes against women in Will County, IL, you would think those who live there would be lining the streets in protest. Fact. If we reduce the number of domestic violence cases, give women the protection in the legal system, there would be a vast reduction in the number of women missing and murdered.

U.S. Perpetuates Mass Killings In Iraq
thisnamecantbetaken

I couldn't care less who wins the elections. Looking at both candidates, it seems America isn't the least bit interested in real change. Is anyone asking the candidates about what they are going to do about the US' slow but steady slide into fascism? Or about limiting presidential power? Or about banning torture? Or about the return of Habeus Corpus? Or about extraordinary renditions and secret prisons? Or about preemptive aggression? Or about making your war criminals pay for their crimes? Hmm? Anyone? No. No. Let's just keep it entertaining, low key and unsubstantial. Let's talk about lipstick! Yeah! Blacks vs whites, Democrats vs Republicans, pro-life vs pro-choice, Christians vs atheists blah blah blah... "Divide and conquer!". The power elite working behind the scenes have that pat down and the US citizenry is blissfully (perhaps willingly) oblivious... *shaking my head in disbelief* Oops! No time to comment any more! The O'Reilly Factor's on! No spin! Really!

Rice Admits Admin. Involved in Torture Discussions
Wisco
by Wisco  9-26-2008    1
The piece goes on to quote Rachel Maddow: MSNBC's Rachel Maddow called the release of Rice's statement "a soul of the nation story," noting that torture violates the Geneva Conventions and is a criminal act under the US War Crimes Act of 1996. She emphasized that "we just can't get this issue behind us," even with the Bush administration on its way out of office, because "issues like this, like torture, still define who we are as a country. It's still unfinished business." Before some right wing dumbass comes along and says "this isn't torture," let me make two points. 1) you do it and see how you feel afterward, 2) that's not a decision that the administration gets to make. That's for courts to decide. Right now, it looks like a war crime. Mostly because it is.

If we take the words of a Toronto judge to heart, the message is the same in every English speaking community around the World.  What defines "respectable" religion from a cult. I suspect it's either number of followers or going against the favorite wedge issue of the day. In reality, the differences are very small and often hinge on the number of angels on a pin. From the article: "At their Saugus, Calif., church in the 1970s, the Alamos preached that anyone who quit the cult would be killed, driven mad, or changed into a homosexual."

The Tyranny of Paramilitary Police Raids and SWAT Teams
blueridge
by blueridge  9-17-2008    3
Great article and podcast from CATO on police extremism (terrorism) that is akin to fascism and contrary to the principles of "proportionate" responses to evidence of crimes, etc. The recent example of a Mayor in Maryland being held at military-style gun point (with his wife and mother-in-law) , after they shot his dogs is what sparked this issue more. These "over the top" police tactics must be stopped. Police increasingly are "swarming", using their paranoid principle of "overwhelming force", which is overwhelmingly irrational, yet is supported by politicians who want to appear "tough on crime", while being ridiculous. They mention in the short podcast that what you see on TV is not representative of what really happens commonly in these SWAT and other raids.
