Forget the Flying Car: Here Comes The Flying Motorcycle
countryboylife
by countryboylife  1-5-2010
As the article concludes - this is how I feel; The skeptics in us think there's a very slim chance they'll hit that deadline; after all, we've seen a lot of pie-in-the-sky personal flying craft ideas come across our desks, but we have yet to see any cruise past our office windows. Still, that doesn't mean we're not anxiously awaiting the day that we do.

Face the Voters
merrie
by merrie  1-5-2010    3
Bob Schieffer of Face The Nation ~ http://www.cbsnews.com/htdocs/pdf/FTN_010310.pdf?tag=cbsnewsTwoColUpperPromoArea Really, what have the Obami done well? Not the stimulus plan. Not crafting a popular and coherent health-care bill. And not instilling confidence that there are competent people who can, when bombarded with intelligence, put it together to prevent an attack or even craft a policy designed to extract information after an attack. But Bob Schieffer, not exactly a fire-breathing conservative, really laid into the Obami. The problem is not only competence but also trust. The Democrats are consumed with political spin even on national security. He notes that Janet Napolitano was getting hammered but explains that this is a symptom of a bigger issue: But she was just following the modern bipartisan public relations template in this age of information management. First, play down the problem.

At 31,000 mph, Space Probe Gets Halfway to Pluto in Record Time; ETA: July 2015
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  12-30-2009    2
Should make for good visuals... During that time, the probe will capture 4.5 gigabytes of data, which it will have to keep sending the four-and-a-half hours back home for months. With its main mission accomplished, the craft will keep moving away from the sun, following in the extrasolar footsteps of the earlier Pioneer and Voyager missions, drifting ever farther away from us.

I originally read this in a clip posted earlier but couldn't resist Amplifying this particular piece. I suppose it shouldn't seem so odd to me, but the visual of an iphone being used by snipers to perfect their craft of shooting people just seems so crazy to me.

Re: Kelika's Clip-Stealth boat Ady Gil
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  12-27-2009    2
Intriguing clip by Kelika led me to do a little research. More from the article below: "Now the newly-renamed vessel has been unveiled as the Sea Shepherd's new weapon in the organisation's sixth campaign against whaling, Operation Waltzing Mathilda, which will launch from Australia early next month. The craft, which is capable of up to 50 knots, will be used to intercept and physically block harpoon ships from illegally slaughtering whales. The Ady Gil and the Steve Irwin are the two remaining ships in the Sea Shepherd Society’s fleet. A third vessel – the Farley Mowat – was sent to protest against Canadian seal hunting last year and was seized by offiicials."

New kind of Art ? Crochet and Knit Graffiti
syncopath
by syncopath  11-21-2009    1
Magda Sayeg, founder of the original knit graffiti crew Knitta Please, works to redefine a craft that has been relegated to the stuffy attic of people's brains and dismissed by a limited vision for knitting's purpose, its function, its practitioners. Sayeg's work repositions this granny pastime in public spaces, streets formerly dominated by a hard, masculine public art culture. The fuzzy tags invoke entirely different connotations, antagonizing expectations and initiating dialogue about community-driven art and intersections between art and craft.

"Research shows that students who have the opportunity to participate in simulations such as legislative hearings, mock trials and, yes, even constitutional conventions not only learn more but develop greater civic skills and interest in politics. Although we need to make sure our children are proficient in math and reading, it is vitally important to the future of our democracy that they also learn what it means to be a competent and involved citizen."

Obama Pledges ACTION
mountainpalm
by mountainpalm  12-19-2009    1
Obama restated his mission to craft policy that will cut CO2 emissions in America by 80 percent before 2050 – an act that will completely devastate the economyand herald a new great depression as we have previously documented. He also said that $100 billion dollars would be mobilized for climate financing by 2020, the vast majority of which will come from a global tax on financial transactions and a GDP tax, as we have highlighted. Obama said the ability to “take collective action is in doubt right now,” admitting that the success of the conference “hangs in the balance.” Upset at the fact that the Copenhagen agenda is stalling, Obama is busily attempting to engineer an agreement via a series of behind closed doors meetings with world leaders. “President Barack Obama and world leaders are holding another impromptu meeting in search of a climate deal,” reports the Associated Press. “Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs said Friday that Obama was meeting behind closed doors with the

Thankfulness Tree
bignosemousie
by bignosemousie  11-4-2009    6
This is the second year we have had a Thankfulness Tree. I have some fake branches that I put in a big vase to hold the leaves. I went to a scrapbooking store and used their die cut machine to make many many leaves from paper. If you buy the paper there, you can use the machines for free. I punched holes in the leaves to hang on the branches without having to mess with string or glue or hangers of any sort. I place the leaves in a bowl with a pen so any guests that come during November can write something they are thankful for on a leaf and hang it up. On Thanksgiving we read the leaves and we give thanks for all the friends and family that have come to our house. Then I put the leaves in a bag and date it so we can read them in future years too. Yesterday, my daughter wrote that she was thankful for "being born" and for "being in this family." I am so thankful for those things too. Go, get your thankfulness on!

READ THE BILL Americans are fed up with Congress, and one of the things they’re most fed up with is the practice of rushing massive bills to a vote without reading them or giving the American people time to read them. H.Res.554, authored by Reps. John Culberson (R-TX) and Brian Baird (D-WA), would require all bills to be posted online for at least 72 hours before they are brought to a vote on the House floor. National Novel Writing Month (2009)
ratilfar
by ratilfar  10-25-2009    2
What: Writing one 50,000-word novel from scratch in a month's time. Who: You! We can't do this unless we have some other people trying it as well. Let's write laughably awful yet lengthy prose together. Why: The reasons are endless! To actively participate in one of our era's most enchanting art forms! To write without having to obsess over quality. To be able to make obscure references to passages from our novels at parties. To be able to mock real novelists who dawdle on and on, taking far longer than 30 days to produce their work. When: You can sign up anytime to add your name to the roster and browse the forums. Writing begins November 1. To be added to the official list of winners, you must reach the 50,000-word mark by November 30 at midnight. Once your novel has been verified by our web-based team of robotic word counters, the partying begins.

Climate 'Debt' Transfers Billions To Developing Countries
merrie
by merrie  10-22-2009    1
But as much as anything else, the Copenhagen treaty calls for the payment by rich countries of what can probably best be described as climate reparations. It would be "impossible to craft and draft" a detailed plan to effectively combat climate change in time for December. "That is not possible. But it is also not necessary," Mr. De Boer said. "I think what Copenhagen has to achieve is a basic political understanding." "By 2020," the treaty insists "the scale of financial flows to support adaptation in developing countries must be at least US$67-billion in the range of US$70-to US$140-billion" every year. If Ottawa signs on to Copenhagen, the size of our resource-based export economy means Canada may pay more dearly for the UN's latest climate-change arrangement than almost any other country on the planet. And in the end, because it may only shift carbon-intensive production from cleaner countries to less-efficient ones, the entire exercise may do very little . . .
