Presto! Obama solved their problem. He eliminates subsidies for Medicare Advantage. The elderly will have to pay more for coverage under Medigap, but the AARP -- which supposedly represents them -- will make more money. If you are a senior ..SHOULD YOU PUT THEM OUT OF BUSINESS.? Obama's health insurance is deadly fiasco
JICWyllie
by JICWyllie  12-28-2009
I don't usually comment on US health care, BUT to be *forced* to pay private profit-making company for inadequate health coverage, with premiums increasing as I age, would make me very riled. And the policy won't do any good for the image of Obama, the Federales, or the health insurance industry. Where is Ralph Nader and a third Party when you need them? Couldn't he get together with Ron Paul -- the ultimate coalition. Howard Dean seems to understand what's going on, but he's an MD. If I were an American, then I would want to try something different. Anything! Why aren't people organising?

Health Bill Creates A Massive Cash Crunch, Then Bankrupts Many Insurers
merrie
by merrie  12-23-2009    3
Insurers are not allowed to take into account differential risks based on pre-existing conditions. And the premium differentials based on such matters as age and tobacco use are smaller than the market spreads. If too many customers demand coverage from a given insurer to insure efficiently, it's the government that will decide how many they have to keep and who they are. Next, it's the government that requires extensive coverage including "ambulatory patient services, emergency services, hospitalization, maternity and newborn care, mental health and substance abuse disorder services, prescription drugs, rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices, laboratory services, preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management, pediatric services, including oral and vision care." The price squeeze gets even tighter because in every required area of care a collection of government standards will help set the minimum level of required services.

Uk Anti-Rape Campaign
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  12-22-2009    3
As much as I hate to think about rape and the holiday season at the same time, I remind myself that for women, it's always the season for rape. More from the article below: "This is all great and exciting, but when I read some news coverage of the campaign it seems that the campaign's focus on the victims is misguided. Take, for example, this article from Reuters that says "Ultimately we want to prevent rape from occurring in the first pace, by arming potential victims with key advice on how to keep themselves safe." It' s great that the campaign aims to help women protect themselves (many anti-rape campaigns focus on this angle), but to me this seems like a backwards approach. Men are the principle perpetrators of rape so why not have a campaign directed at them which aims to arms them with the tools to change their attitudes toward sex and power. If men stopped raping women, women wouldn't need advice on keeping themselves safe."

Cowell to Quit Idol?

Ahh, it's about time. I have never been an Idol fan, or watcher for that matter. When I have watched, like most I tend to disagree with Cowell. But that's the shtick anyway: we're supposed to disagree with him. It's what has made people watch. It seems the shtick may be getting old though. Is due to the fact that people get bored with a regular visitor to their house that they disagreed with?

Sebelius Praises Abortion Accounting Trick in Senate Bill
merrie
by merrie  12-22-2009    2
SEBELIUS : And I would say that the Senate language, which was negotiated by Senators Barbara Boxer and Patty Murray, who are very strong defenders of women’s health services and choices for women, take a big step forward from where the House left it with the Stupak amendment, and I think do a good job making sure there are choices for women, making sure there are going to be some plan options, and making sure that while public funds aren’t used, we are not isolating, discriminating against, or invading the privacy rights of women. That would be an accounting procedure, but everybody in the exchange would do the same thing, whether you’re male or female, whether you’re 75 or 25, you would all set aside a portion of your premium that would go into a fund, and it would not be earmarked for anything, it would be a separate account that everyone in the exchange would pay.

The Reid Amendment: Sweetheart Deals and Interstate Warfare
merrie
by merrie  12-22-2009    1
Massachusetts and Vermont have already expanded Medicaid eligibility so they would not have benefited from new federal financing under the original legislation. The Reid amendment provides a fix for these states. The increased federal spending will not increase insurance coverage, it will only substitute federal funds for state funds. Who are the losers? All the other states. According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) analysis of the Reid Amendment, total state funding for Medicaid and SCHIP will increase by $1 billion compared to the original legislation. Clearly if total state spending goes up and spending for a few favorite states goes down, then all the other states are picking up the tab. New federal rules will punish states that would use the flexibility of current law to increase the share paid by with local governments for Medicaid. California and New York historically have shared the cost and administration of Medicaid with counties and municipalities ......

Dirty Harry Reid’s "ABORTION FIX" IS NOT FIXED ~ “Manager’s Amendment"
merrie
by merrie  12-20-2009    2
that cover elective abortions. The new language does include a “state opt-out” provision if a state passes a law to prohibit insurance coverage of abortion, but it’s a sham because it does nothing to prevent one state’s tax dollars from paying for elective abortions in other states. A majority of Americans believe that health care plans should not be mandated to provide elective abortion coverage, and a majority of Americans do not believe government health care plans should include abortion coverage. Currently, federal appropriations bills include language known as the Hyde Amendment that prohibits the use of federal funds to pay for elective abortions under the Medicare and Medicaid programs, while another provision, known as the Smith Amendment, prohibits federal funding of abortion under the federal employees’ health benefits plan .
