POPSMore and more e-books being stored on the 'cloud' It will be very interesting to see which of these approaches becomes the preferred option, and especially how popular "demand" affects "price". Given the increasing availability of "annotation" services that overlay web content and the increasing demands on personal time, it is easy to anticipate that "user generated" annotation content may well become the modern equivalent of the Reader's Digest "condensed" book.

POPSBackupify: Online Account Backup "Free Forever For A Limited Time" Backupify is currently offering free unlimited accounts to anyone who signs up before January 31st. I confirmed that these free accounts will remain free forever even after their new pricing scheme goes into effect. You also may want to consider that the Backupify service needs your login information for each of the accounts it is going to perform automatic backups on. If, for some reason your Backupify account were ever compromised it could lead to your other accounts being compromised as well. Backupify only stores physical passwords for certain sites that require it such as Gmail. With other sites they only store the password token or cookie that is necessary to login to your account. In any case Backupify states that they, "use advanced encryption methods to keep your login credentials safe."

POPSFark Screws Members | Goes the Way of Digg with "rel=nofollow" In addition, instead of using some kind of javascript to, I guess track outbound links they switched it to a perl based tracker that redirects people to the actual site onclick. They also query string encoded the stupid thing to I guess prevent people from directly linked content. Wasn't that hard, but annoying. Go to hell fark.

POPSPhatic communication - in small talk, the container is more important than the content More: # "Phatic communication refers also to trivial and obvious exchanges about the weather and time, made up of ready-made sentences or foreseeable statements. . . . Therefore this is a type of communication that establishes a contact without transmitting a precise content, where the container is more important then the content." (F. Casalegno and I.M. McWilliam, "Communication Dynamics in Technological Mediated Learning Environments." International Journal of Instructional Technology and Distance Learning, Nov. 2004)

POPSDigg Screws Members | Goes rel "no follow" In a disturbing trend among many SB sites, Digg is apparently trying to keep all the link juice for itself, saying it will only allow links to go do follow if a certain number of user votes. The problem with that is we all know that vote rings make it possible for many undeserving links to get votes at Digg. So how can Digg vouch for Huffington Post, when the rumor is they have paid voters, etc.?

POPSGreen light for internet filter plans Most teens know about sites which will relay access to the banned sites. They use them at school to overcome the limitations placed by teachers. The firefox addon, "Web of Trust" should work for accidental visits by kids. Watching what the kids are using is difficult. Not many parents are not surprised by their children's antics at some stage. The govt thinks it has to be seen making an effort.

POPSTwitter and the Global Brain In fact, judging by Twitter's Trending Topics, the re-tweeting process does not point to either good, or important content. Of course, it may not be right to assume that a global brain will be smarter, and real significance will be lost in the tsunami of celebrity drivel.

POPSWhy the Comcast-NBC Merger Must Be Stopped Perhaps the most dangerous risk of this deal -- and one we have seen many times in years -past - is that it will trigger a "merger wave" throughout the industry as distribution companies and content companies seek to "muscle up" to match the new threat that the vertically integrated Comcast poses. Consumer choice will be restricted and prices will rise. With diminishing competition, the likelihood of similar behavior by other companies grows stronger, as does the threat of collusion among competitors. - more @ clip source

POPSWill Tone of MSNBC Change w/Comcast Merger? I have a pretty basic Comcast package and ever since I heard people complaining that they removed the MEssNBC, I found it up on stn.#128, away from the more "regular" channels, so I'd advise one to scan their sets, you may still have it. (I can't believe I'm helping anyone find the thing;-) Anyway, I think it would be too obvious for Comcast to make it any more scarce. Maybe it's just as well to keep those nutjobs (Olbermann, Matthews, Maddow, etc.) all in one place where they think they've really got something goin' on. Otherwise who knows what kind of hell they'd raise with their whining.

POPSGoogle says Murdoch stories can be taken off Rupert is really struggling with the concept that he doesn't control the world. How many people who buy his newspapers are computer literate eg the laptop (with access to most news sources) on the train, or the newspaper on the train?
