Ross Perot Jr Haggling to Finish Off the Rhino He Shot That Got Away
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  11-8-2009
"White rhino (Ceratotherum simum) are considered a conservation-dependent species and are classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Intense efforts have increased the population from fewer than 100 in 1895 to approximately 17,500 today. Supporters of trophy hunting claim it is a viable method for “managing” the white rhino population. The practice also brings in tourism dollars and helps fund conservation efforts. Many others oppose the notion of trophy hunting, pointing out that killing an animal to get a thrill - and acquire a stuffed head for one’s wall - is not an acceptable “sport”." Apparently his son Hill Perot got his trophy, "white rhino head".

Chairman of Senate Judiciary Committee Flunks Question on Constitution
merrie
by merrie  10-22-2009    1
Sen. Leahy: "No. The federal government does that on federal highways." Prior to 1995, the federal government mandated a speed limit of 55 miles an hour on all four-lane highways. The limit was repealed in 1995 and the authority to set speed limits reverted back to the states. Technically, the law that established the 55 mile-an-hour limit--the Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act of 1974--withheld federal highway funds from states that did not comply with it. The law rested on the Commerce Clause, which give Congress the authority to regulate interstate commerce, and Congress’ authority to dole out federal tax revenue. Someone who does not buy health insurance, critics have argued, is not by that ommission engaged in interstate commerce and thus there is no act of interstate commerce for Congress to regulate in this situation. The Door to Hell
dmoonme1
by dmoonme1  10-20-2009
Well...so much for resource conservation You'd think some one of those Russian scientists would be able to figure out a way to extinguish the darn thing, but maybe they just don't care. 35 years burning endlessly is an awful waste I must say. Any combustible gas can be converted into a useful resource.

10 Amazing Facts About Worldwide Water Use
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  10-17-2009
More facts: Since 1950, water usage in the United States has risen 127 percent. If you shorten your showers by just a single minute, you can save approximately 700 gallons of water in a month. Letting the tap run when you brush your teeth wastes up to 4 gallons of water every time. It takes an average of 300 gallons to water your lawn. During the summer, this can account for almost half of your water usage. It takes an average of 300 gallons to water your lawn. During the summer, this can account for almost half of your water usage. Another wasteful desert endeavor, the proposed Waveyards water park in Mesa, Arizona will require up to 100 million gallons of groundwater every year in an area that receives a mere 8 inches of rainfall in that time. This last is particularly insane. All the Western states are in desperate need of water for crops and other basic uses. The Colorado River no longer reaches the sea. Salmon spawning grounds have almost disappeared and major animal (as we

There's not so much incentive to invest in exploration, lots of incentive to keep the price of existing supplies as high a possible. The key on price is not really supply, but must be based on what people can afford to pay.

US Energy and Natural Resouces Maze
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  10-12-2009
Scan the more than 250 bills introduced this term in to the US House Natural Resources Committee and the 49 members of the committee and you begin to understand how difficult it is to enact large strategic changes in policy and why Congress might spend time building target shooting facilities on public lands or in wilderness sites. Consider what states have representatives on the committee and those that do not. Earmarking or "pork" then starts to become clear: "Give you a new energy policy? Sure - give me a new pier for Santa Monica." grin/groan.

Endangered Bird Becomes Internet Sensation: Sirocco the Kakapo Hits the Big Time
JackieDel
by JackieDel  10-10-2009
Sirocco was featured in a recent BBC series entitled "Last Chance To See," profiling some of the thousands of species of animals in the world that are threatened with extinction, mostly due to human incursion and our effects on wild habitat. A report last summer by the International Union for Conservation of Nature asserts that "nearly one third of amphibians, more than one in eight birds and nearly a quarter of mammals are threatened with extinction." As the Kakapo Conservation website reminds us, "6 billion people on earth; only 124 kakapo." Not a good ratio, and one repeated thousands of times over, around the world. Sirocco is named for a warm Mediterranean wind. Let's hope he wafts into human conscience with a renewed sense of wonder for the amazing and gorgeous creatures on this planet, and a reminder of our responsibility for them.
