POPSSchwarzenegger quietly kills effort to get commuter rail funds More: Eliminated from the state application for federal funds was almost $170 million for positive train control — computer-guided braking systems designed to prevent crashes and allow conventional trains to safely travel at 110 mph. Such automated systems, which the federal government wants installed by 2015, would have prevented the commuter rail crash in suburban Los Angeles last year that killed 25 people in the worst rail accident in modern California history. Also removed was $969 million in railroad crossing improvements, track additions, overpasses and maintenance projects designed to benefit the corridor between San Diego and Los Advertisement Angeles as well as the main rail line through Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. One major goal of commuter rail services has been to reduce the travel time between San Diego and Los Angeles from about three hours to two hours.

POPSAre kids under 13 watching YouTube? You bet they are, and by a wide margin over the leading childrens content providers. So should YouTube do more to protect kids? Perhaps. But as this article suggests, there are many positives as well. For me, its come down to diligently monitoring my kids web time and placing the computer in our kitchen; its provided both web safety teaching moments as well as some great family bonding.

POPSBook from The Ground The design of airport signs and airline safety manuals is based upon image recognition. Diagrams there are employed as the primary means of communication in an attempt to explain relatively complex matters with a minimum of words. It was this that truly fascinated me. Since about 1999, I have collected over one hundred safety cards, but until recently I had no clear goal in so doing. Then, in 2003, I noticed three small images on a pack of gum (they translate into please use your wrapper to dispose of the gum in a trashcan), and came to realize that in so far as icons alone can explain something simple, they can also be used to narrate a longer story.

POPSThe smile says it all more: Neil Armstrong was a civilian Astronaut, not a member of the Air Force. He had been a Naval combat pilot, and then became a civilian test pilot for the X-15. 3. Though Neil Armstrong was the first to walk on the moon, Michael Collins was the Command Module pilot, and Buzz Aldrin was the Lunar Module pilot. 4. As the Lunar Module made its descent, alarm bells went off signalling program problems, which could have led to aborting the mission. Back at Mission Control, Flight Controller Steve Bales identified the alarms as resulting from computer overload, and okayed the landing. Bales would later receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his role. 5. The Lunar Module landing site was improvised after finding the planned site too rocky for safety. For a while Mission Control had no idea of the location of the module or the astronauts, and Astronaut Mike Collins who was orbiting the moon in the command module never saw the landin

POPSSunshine State Becoming A Magnet "Joe Snyder owns Clinchfield Drug Co., an old-fashioned store on Main Street with a lunch counter and multicolored candy canes for sale. He, like many others here, has stopped filling Florida prescriptions. The sketchy "patients" make him worry for the safety of his employees. He also worries about running out of the powerful drugs for the people who really need them. "I've got legitimate customers; they're dying of cancer, and they've got to have it," he said."

POPSDo We Need a New Internet Right now, I can't see how creating a new internet would provide any more security. Creating a new internet will open the door for charging to gain access to it and even then hackers will find ways to get to our information. So, why bother?

POPSAutonomous VW says, "Look, Ma - No Hands" Traffic signals and stop signs were adhered to while oncoming traffic, three-way intersections and sudden stops by the demonstration cars in front of the Passat were recognized. Another engineer sat in the driver seat for safety precautions, but his hands never touched the wheel or foot pedals. It was like the Passat had become possessed!

POPSTens of thousands become tens of hundreds Did protest organizers misjudge the mood of the country? Or are modern-day protesters more content with protesting from the relative safety of their own computer using the internet instead of carrying signs? Maybe too many of us can't afford to take time off from work. Or maybe we can't afford the gas to drive to or the airfair to get to Denver. One thing is certain, Denver Police got to drag out their spiffy riot gear and get all excited about the prospect of busting some heads. I'll bet they feel pretty let down by the sad turnout.
