POPSFrancis Scott Key Emerges from Grave, Demands His Poem Back "I need to get something off my chest, and I'd like you to write it down," he said. "Certainly, Mr. Key. Pleased to make your acquaintance," I told him, having decided to humor the guy. I was bored, and I was stuck on a train for the next hour, at least. He was dressed like a dandy and appeared to be harmless. "I assume you know who I am, and that I died long ago," he began. I nodded, and he continued, "You should know that we watch the living. We see everything." He proceeded to describe the present political drama in America with particular emphasis on the irrational fear of Barack Obama, "displayed in disparate, but decidedly loud segments of America's politically motivated," as he put it. He spoke of his observances like someone describing "Reality TV" to a person who had no idea what a television was.

These images are shown in no particular order. Click images for a larger view.

POPSIs This Your Paper On Single Serving Sites? More: These sites, which writer Jason Kottke termed “single serving sites” in February 20081, capture visitors’ attention for a fraction of a minute, a tacit acknowledgement of the economy of attention in which they operate. In this space they express many traditional messages that have found an emerging new form of expression on the Internet. Dozens of tiny, single serving sites provide a venue for pop culture references, inside jokes, art displays, collective action, bids for peer approval, humor, and advice. Collectively they offer a perspective on the web as a platform for a unique brand of storytelling.

POPSNo program has won the gold or silver prizes "No program has won the gold or silver prizes. The silver would go to a machine that could pass a longer version of the Turing Test and fool at least half the judges. The gold would go to a machine that could process audio and visual information rather than just text. " "Despite _ or maybe because of _ his win, Roberts said he did not buy Turing's argument. "I don't think it's anything like thought," he said of Elbot's conversational prowess. "If you know a magic trick, you know how it's done, it's not magic anymore. Sorry to be so pessimistic." Still i think this event is important in the path of AI emergence.

POPSMcCain Is Not Cool Like Barack But on the other hand, Uncle Jeremiah and Billy the Bomber are definitely very "fly" Wondering No More Johan Goldberg Pfeiffer said. "It's extraordinary that someone who wants to be our president and our commander in chief doesn't know how to send an e-mail." The outrage comes from inside: McCain's severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes. In a similar vein I guess it's an outrage that the blind governor of New York David Patterson doesn't know how to drive a car. After all, transportation issues are pretty important. How dare he serve as governor. Some say, So what if he was handicapped? He could still learn how to send email. Sure, but why would he? Bill Clinton sent two emails during his entire presidency and often admitted he didn't know squat about the internet. http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=OTliMTNiZjg5ZDEwZWNiZDYwZWFjN2JlNjNjNjkxZmM=

POPSCtrl,Alt,Del if you've heard this joke before Reminds me of a laugh track. Give computers a sense of humor ? A sense of humor is helped by knowing that something is funny, that there are others that agree, and the generally agree for the same reason. An expression of community. It can depend on the infectiousness of laughter. Some of the funniest jokes are about things that cannot be programmed. Like, when you had to be there. They don't need programmers who think they are comedians, they need comedians who think they can program. One big problem. Computers aren't funny hillarious, but sometimes they're funny peculiar, as in, funny how it crashed just before I did a backup.

POPS100 billion Internet videos 100 billion videos were watched this year on the Internet. That's mucho input into the collective brain. When I am watching one of those computer shorts, I can't help but think of all the others around the world who may be observing it along with me. A feeling of comradeship I never did get while gazing the boob-tube. I guess it's because when I'm viewing these clips I think of the people who uploaded them. Yesterday, I came across a comedian named Bill Hicks, a very funny young man who died in 1994. One particular video was an interview Bill did in England explaining his type of humor. The person who put this vid on youtube explained he had come across the rare footage while searching for something else. A happening I've experienced on more than one occasion. Camaraderie with a stranger. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMyti0nxBqQ
