POPSChandelier Cells Unveil Human Cognition "By triggering specific chandelier cells, the authors were able to elicit a precisely timed chain of electrical events in the neocortex. Additionally, the authors found that the synaptic pathways between chandeliers and pyramid cells are incredibly strong – much stronger than has been recorded previously in other mammals. This suggests that humans do possess different types of cells, and that our higher cognition isn't due to having larger cells. Although chandelier cells have been found in other species, they are more complex in humans. This raises the possibility that there are many things which attribute to higher cognition – different types of cells, and a complex circuitry, perhaps. This study by Tamas, et al, furthers the search for the answers to higher cognition, and more fully opens the door to questions of how our brains compare to those of other species."

POPSThe Evolving AI Ecosystem He takes his theory further, all the way in to the tubes of the internet. In collaboration with Professor Tim Berners-Lee – the co-inventor of the World Wide Web – the pair have been investigating the next generation Web. “What is emerging now is a digital ecosystem,’ says Professor Shadbolt, ‘involving lots of simple systems which connect millions of complex ones – humans!” And there begins to be a certain amount of logic and a lessening of the fear I feel for the day when I am some robots whipping boy. We see such developments already in websites such as Facebook and Flickr, and programs such as Google Earth and World of Warcraft. We are being linked together, ever so slowly by a collective consciousness.

POPSMexican regional varieties of tamales
Also Chiapas (countless varieties using different herbs, beans, chicharrón (crispy, fried pork rind) and even flower buds), Tabasco (one of Mexico's biggest cattle producers and grows sugar cane, cacao, coffee, corn, rice, peppers, bananas, coconuts, pineapple, watermelon and a variety of exotic fruit. All these, in addition to Maya herbs and spices more often associated with the Yucatán, flavor Tabasco's tamales, which are usually filled with pork, pejelagarto (large freshwater gar), chicken or even iguana), Veracruz (most famous for its fantastically large zacahuil tamale, which can be made up to 12 feet long for festive occasions and contain whole chickens, fish, turkeys, roasts or game, along with chiles, garlic and tomatoes, all wrapped in banana leaves and slow-roasted in a mud-brick and earth pit), and Yucatán (pork and chicken fillings marinated in achiote (with orange and lemon juices) are wrapped with tomato, peppers, onion and toasted garlic in banana leaves, and cooked in a

POPSAbstinence or a condom in every pot Over the past two decades, as more and more school systems have implemented abstinence programs, the rate of teen pregnancy has declined. The number of high-school students who say they are virgins has increased, and the abortion rate has dropped. Is all of this good news due to abstinence-only programs? It’s a complex subject, and the evidence remains inconclusive. And clearly any school abstinence message is practically drowned out by the vulgar and licentious culture all around us. Still, we may be slowly climbing out of the hole we’ve dug for ourselves. The last thing we should be doing is declaring abstinence education a failure.

POPSGOP-ers weigh in on Bush's eight years That may be but the bubble of self-inflicted delusion is alive and well: "I regard Bush 43 as one of the greatest presidents of the last century, right up there with Reagan, and I have tremendous respect and admiration for what he's done," said Clint Moore, a Texas delegate. In what parallel universe?
