The Commonality of Diverse Animal Calls
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  1-6-2010
"Our results indicate that, for all species, basic features of acoustic communication are primarily controlled by individual metabolism, which in turn varies predictably with body size and temperature. So, when the calls are adjusted for an animal's size and temperature, they even sound alike." (James Gillooly, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the department of biology at UF's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and a member of the UF Genetics Institute)

Making "Islam" synonymous with "terrorism"
ratilfar
by ratilfar  12-31-2009    2
"Olympic bombing suspect Eric Robert Rudolph -- wanted in attacks that killed two people and injured more than 100 in the Southeast -- was arrested early Saturday in western North Carolina and faces a Monday morning court date. Rudolph has been charged in the 1996 Centennial Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta, Georgia; 1997 bombings at a gay nightclub and a clinic that performed abortions in the Atlanta area; and a bombing at a clinic in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1998" -- CNN, May 31, 2003. "Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated at a peace rally Saturday night in Tel Aviv's Kings Square, a top aide confirmed. He was reportedly shot in the arm and back by a Jewish man in his mid-20s who is allegedly affiliated with right-wing extremist groups. . . . Amir confessed to the assassination and reportedly told investigators, 'I acted alone on God's orders and I have no regrets'." -- CNN, November 4, 1995.

Let's just borrow more so we can buy more...duh!
egoldstein
by egoldstein  12-11-2009    4
If you compare a country to a company of individual, the idea that any entity that has too much debt can actually solve their problem by accumulating more debt seems absurd to me (and Jim Rogers as well). And the extent to which Americans consume is not only economically unfeasible, it is sort of pathetic. These days, I'm thinking we should make our county's moto "a flat screen for everyone!"

Implicit: Discovering Your Unconscious Bias
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  12-11-2009
This site presents some amazing tests that help you explore your hidden beliefs. More from the site below: "Project Implicit blends basic research and educational outreach in a virtual laboratory at which visitors can examine their own hidden biases. Project Implicit is the product of research by three scientists whose work produced a new approach to understanding of attitudes, biases, and stereotypes. The Project Implicit site (implicit.harvard.edu) has been functioning as a hands-on science museum exhibit, allowing web visitors to experience the manner in which human minds display the effects of stereotypic and prejudicial associations acquired from their socio-cultural environment."

Can't help wondering about how our obsession with genetic health solutions compare to natural selection and biodiversity? I can't help but feel most of the time humans are particularly short-sighted seeing such a brief, brief, brief glimpse in the grander vaster scheme of things and hence make decisions, rules, laws based on this - with results that are life depleting rather than life enhancing (to ALL LIFE).

Barack W. Bush--Obama's "Preventive War" in Afghanistan, Neocons Applaud
blueridge
by blueridge  12-2-2009    4
Obushma's Afghanistan war policy--the BUSH DOCTRINE CONTINUES. The word "terrorism" was hardly invoked, but "essential for our national interests....and attacks on our HOMELAND" implied the same thing. It's still all about the 9/11, and only the rhetoric has changed slightly. But this war is not about "national interests", but International (Globalist) interests. Obama is a Puppet for the globalist agenda as much as Bush was to the neoconservative agenda for "global hegemony". See Rachel Maddow's MSNBC video analysis about Obama's Nobel Peace Prize and proof that the Bush Doctrine continues. Powerful analysis. The real purpose of Af-Pak war policy is here .

The two largest Jewish groups said the referendum infringed religious freedom, a concept enshrined in the Swiss constitution. Part of the Swiss People's Party's argument against minarets is that they are a symbol of political power - more than they are about religion.

More: I understand completely if you can’t find it in your heart to forgive me for looking like 3 decades have passed…….Of COURSE you should mock & belittle me for being so large!! What else could you POSSIBLY do?????!?… You have every right to compare me to Yoda or Elton or Kirstie…….I’ve brought it on myself. But here’s this thing that I found myself wondering………what the fuck do YOU look like??! I know i don’t really have the right to ask……I’m a public figure——Ive made an unspoken contract to keep that figure slim…….but still, I find myself wondering…….See, I think the folks that insult & mock celebrities who DARE to pack on ten pounds or—–God forbid——MORE than ten!…..I would think it only fair that they post a photo of themselves along with their poisonous observations! And you know what else would be SUPER cool??? Their IQ! ALL the numbers! An approximate count of Weight AND wisdom!

Yawn - Dinesh's Same Tired Dogma
AtlLiberal

This guy never adds anything new to the conversation. The same tired arguments, over and over again. For those of you unfamiliar with this defender of the faith, he is a frequent columnist on the World Net Daily. The WND is notorious for such rational positions as backing the Birthers, Creationists, and Christian Nationalists. Dinesh's mainstays are straw men, claiming atheists are a dangerous "movement", and bashing liberals. One could compare him to Glenn Beck without a TV show.

A Tale Of Two Women

There is a world of difference in my previous clip "Triumph Of A Dreamer", a woman who overcame many obstacles to improving her life and this tale of ingratitude. Compare the stories. Poor Sarah Palin elects to portray herself as a victim again and again as she laughs all the way to the bank. I don't know who is more pathetic--the idiots who pre-ordered this trash or Ms. Palin.
