NSW church-state deal 'hampering ethics education'
tabsey
by tabsey  10-27-2008
This will change, it's older than me. Remember Religious Instruction as a waste of time. The volunteers were unable to control classes, the kids learnt nothing and many wanted to opt out when there weren't mobs of rewards. So much is put on teachers these days, such as ethics lessons. I taught ethics (non religious) from the first time I walked into a classroom and most teachers do the same.

Sociology - Put it into practice
psidre
by psidre  1-18-2009
Some of the support areas that I am including in my thesis rely on this field. I feel an understanding of sociology and what groups in the field are doing is invaluable. By knowing ourselves we better understand each other, in turn an understanding of the interactions between us all give insight into the individuality that makes up each of us.

A Muslim on the Crucifix Controvery at Boston College
Efrain Alvarado
by Efrain Alvarado  2-13-2009    5
...So the student said, "Oh, ecumenical means we think we're all equal, and we didn't want to discriminate against others, and offend outsiders." And the Muslim said, "You mean people like me, and my friend the Jew?" "Well, yes." "Well, I am highly insulted." "Why?" "Well, you're treating me like a bigot." "No, we hate bigotry." "Let me explain. Suppose you came to my country. You enrolled in a Muslim university. Now we don't have pictures or images; we think that's idolatry, but when you are in a Muslim university, you know you are in a Muslim university. Who would object to a Muslim symbol in a Muslim university, except a bigot? Now you expect me to be offended by a Catholic symbol - the crucifix - in a Catholic university, so you are treating me like a bigot." He didn't stop. He said to the students, "How many of you believe that Jesus is the Son of God?" And most of them raised their hand.

IFMA is an umbrella organization for more than 200 missions agencies. They are from a wide range of theological perspectives. Yet they agree on these nine statements. It is difficult to find such a simple summary of Christian doctrines that so many Christian leaders accept.

Oortcloud
by Oortcloud  7-31-2007    4
A recent survey I read suggests that religion (in america) is not so dominant as the 90% and higher figures depict. The way the questions are asked can greatly influence the outcome of a survey and the number of non believers actually runs around 25% rather than the often stated 9%
