Linguistic superpowers
Deepti
by Deepti  1-8-2008    5
The book Limits of Language by Swedish linguist Mikael Parkvall is a sort of languages-only Guinness Book of Records, listing everything that’s large, small and otherwise interesting about the manifold manners of human speech and associated forms of communication. One item deals with the world’s most linguistically diverse countries, and is illustrated with this map, of the world’s ‘linguistic superpowers’.

The Sarcasm Mark
Godfrey Daniel
by Godfrey Daniel  1-8-2007    14
Mulleflupp's Punctuation clip] This is an interesting idea, and this new punctuation mark could definitely have some usefulness, but the great fun of written sarcasm, for me, is in the detection. The element of uncertainty stimulates the brain, and a fine-tuning of one's perception.

Songs From The Sea: Deciphering Dolphin Language With Picture Words
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  12-31-2008    6
Dr. Horace Dobbs, a leading authority on dolphin-assisted therapy, has joined the team as consultant. "I have long held the belief that the dolphin brain, comparable in size with our own, has specialized in processing auditory data in much the same way that the human brain has specialized in processing visual data. Nature tends not to evolve brain mass without a need, so we must ask ourselves what dolphins do with all that brain capacity. The answer appears to lie in the development of brain systems that require huge auditory processing power. There is growing evidence that dolphins can take a sonic 'snap shot' of an object and send it to other dolphins, using sound as the transmission medium. We an therefore hypothesize that the dolphin's primary method of communication is picture based. Thus, the picture-based imaging method, employed by Reid and Kassewitz, seems entirely plausible."

What if everyone had only 1 phone number?
egoldstein

With the introduction of Google Voice, it seems that we could all have 1 master phone number that we give out...and then that phone number will be used to ring all our numbers when it's called. I'm too tired to think of the negatives of this, but seems like it could be very helpful.

I've done a lot of writing about my perspective on ClipCast, but i just read some really insightful comments by ouyangwulong that said it better than i have been able to. Wanted to share them with everyone by clipping them. Thank you ouyangwulong. Not just for having such a positive perspective on it, but for truly tapping into and expressing the essence of what it's all about. It was truly a great feeling to read your comments. By the way, i'm eric goldstein on facebook. Would love to see the "other side" of your clips...friend me if you like :)
