POPSBoing Boing: How I learned to love my persimmon tree Lots of good discussion in the comments - how to choose a persimmon, how to ripen them, things to do with them, why you do not want to eat underripe persimmons, and much more. Persimmons are a family favorite, and I guess we must just have dumb luck with ripening them - the problems people describe here with being unable to ripen them are all new to me. (For the record, the family persimmon-ripening method: Place persimmon stem-side down on the kitchen counter, not in direct sun. Leave it there. Pick up once or twice a day to check whether it's getting soft yet. *shrug* It's always worked for us - we've never needed any of the tricks people mention in this post's comments.)

POPSListen To Your YouTube Comment Before Posting Not sure which is weirder--that YouTube now gives commenters the opportunity to listen to their comments out loud in order to better filter their idiocy, or that this feature was taken from an idea in an uber-geeky web comic.

POPSPercentage of missed votes McCain indeed leads the list, but check the "complete career" percentage. Obama hasn't been running for president all that long and in the Senate only 2+ yrs. His 2 yrs tops McCain's 20+ yrs.. Obama's comments yesterday where that if he was needed in Washington, everyone had airplanes and they could be back quickly enough to handle whatever business needed to be done. WoW!

POPSSanta Cruz Police Bring Violence to Peacful Protest Santa Cruz Police Bring Violence to Peaceful Protest. Main Stream Media Smeared what really occurred. Here is another view. I was there. The arrested protester was released, after a day in jail and the threat of 50,000 in bail, no charges. He was injured and never touched an officer. He was using a passive restive tactic to do what he thought was right. He took a stand.

POPSAstroturfing and a classic example: As a Republican and strong McCain supporter in 2000, I was disappointed and saddened in 2004 when McCain permanently traded in his maverick credentials and sold out his principles to support George W. Bush. I now find it equally disturbing to see him gamble our security and future with a reckless choice for a running mate. McCain and Palin quickly emerged from the rhetoric of their convention as the uniters of dividers. I talk politics with a lot of people from all walks of life. I find it compelling that many of the ordinary Republicans I talk to understand that their families cannot afford another four years like the last eight. We all deserve better. Tarsa is chairman of the Lebanon County Democratic Committee." Apparently party lines run right through Christopher Tarsa.

POPSDid Obama Steal His 'Lip Stick on a Pig' Speech from a Political Cartoon? You can see for yourself that the entire segment before his "pig" quip matches the Toles cartoon exactly. The folks at FreeRepublic have found an interesting... uh, shall we say coincidence... concerning Barack Obama's widely panned September 9 comments made at a rally in Virginia where he seemed to be saying that Governor Palin was a "pig" by referencing the "lipstick" quote from her acceptance speech at the GOP convention. So, now we have a few points to ponder. Will the Obama campaign admit that this whole bit was lifted from Tom Toles? And are we to understand that the Obama campaign is now being programmed by cartoons? See ya in the funny papers, Barack. Be sure and Visit my Home blog Publius' Forum. It's what's happening NOW!

POPSTrolls and Other Nastiness A very provocative article on freedom on speech vs. downright nastiness, hatred and harassment. Is uncensored speech the most free, or is free speech enhanced by civility?

POPSGot too many comments to keep track of? coComment! I'm really likin' coComment. Before, I had all these bookmarks in a folder to track comments I'd left on sites. It got pretty gnarly (in a bad way). Now, for the most part, I can use coComment. While it doesn't do forums, doesn't recognize some sites like Lifehacker and doesn't seem to work with Clipmarks either (yet!), it *does* work with most blogs and keeps all comment threads tucked on a neat page for future reference. coComment's saved me a lot of time thus far!
