Matt Damon in 'Green Zone', Movie With Message About Iraq War
blueridge
by blueridge  11-3-2009
"Bourne Goes to Iraq" or Loyal Army officer finds out truth and the real enemy which changes his mission against the "powers that be". Note in the clipmark from Wiki the producer intends this to be not merely entertainment but relevant commentary: "Film shouldn't be disenfranchised from the national conversation. It is never too soon for cinema to engage with events that shape our lives. Perhaps this is like Clooney and Damon in Syriana in that respect. Allegedly based upon this book here. , which has some real interesting "reviews" worth considering.

The Camel In The Room

by merrie  11-12-2009    1
His former imam from the Falls Church, Virginia mosque where he once worshipped has said so, and indeed has said that, as a Muslim, Major Hasan could do nothing else other than what he did. Note this phrase from the title: “US Terrorist Army Base.” Major Hasan is a psychiatrist, so he should know that projection–literally, “throwing off on the other person”–is one of the most common defenses that people employ when they think, or especially do, things of which they should, at the very least, be ashamed. But the most damning piece of evidence was Hasan’s infamous “Grand Rounds” that he delivered back in 2007 while at Walter Reed Hospital, titled “The Koranic World View As It Relates to Muslims in the U.S. Military.” In that presentation, which any reader can view in its entirety at the above link, Hasan repeatedly cited and often quoted surah and ayah (i.e., chapter and verse) from the Koran to justify some very forthright, even brazen commentary on the relationships

Parallels to Obamamania in ABC's "V" Sci-Fi Mini-Series
merrie
by merrie  11-10-2009
An excerpt from Garvin's Sunday, November 1 Miami Herald review (“'V': The saucer-shaped bandwagon”), which the Chicago Tribune headlined “'V' aims at Obamamania.” Imagine this. At a time of political turmoil, a charismatic, telegenic new leader arrives virtually out of nowhere. He offers a message of hope and reconciliation based on compromise and promises to marshal technology for a better future that will include universal health care. The news media swoons in admiration -- one simpering anchorman even shouts at a reporter who asks a tough question: “Why don't you show some respect?!!” The public is likewise smitten, except for a few nut cases who circulate batty rumors on the Internet about the leader's origins and intentions. The leader, undismayed, offers assurances that are soothing, if also just a tiny bit condescending: “Embracing change is never easy.”

Tim McGirk, friend to the Taliban and promotor of the 'secondary PTSD' defense for the murderer Hasa
Antara
by Antara  11-9-2009    1
Noah Pollak at Commentary has discovered that Mr. McGirk has a rather interesting history: This shouldn’t be surprising coming from Tim McGirk. He went to Afghanistan after 9/11, had Thanksgiving with the Taliban, and wrote a long piece for National Geographic about what a great time he had and how we’re all just human beings doing our thing on this big blue marble, so let’s not judge. Then he went to Iraq and singlehandedly created the Haditha Massacre hoax. Then he went to Jerusalem and spent a few years slandering Israel. Now he’s trafficking in pop psychology on behalf of a likely domestic jihadist. It’s been quite a career.

What is it with liberals and sexual slurs?
n2sooners
by n2sooners  11-5-2009    5
Problems with this article (other than the sexual slurs). The assumption that the tea party movement is a wing of the republican party when they are just as disgusted with big government republicans as they are with big government democrats. She called Scozzafava a moderate. She, like other party loyalists, assumed it would be better for republicans to win with a liberal candidate than lose with a conservative. It's time people stop voting for letters following someone's name and vote for the candidate closest to their own beliefs. It isn't a two party system when both parties are on the same side. The fact that Scozzafava endorsed the democrat was proof that conservatives were right and she was the wrong person for the job. Scozzafava winning would have been just as big a loss for conservatives as Owens winning.

You dishonor the memories of the fallen and disrespect the families of those who continue to fight on by your continued excuse-making and endless consultation that serves no other purpose than to appear as if you are doing something, while searching in vain for what you perceive to be a better answer. Mr. President, deciding to do nothing is still a decision. I demand, decency demands, Americans who believe in victory demand, and most importantly, the American families with family members in the fight, who certainly have the most invested and unquestionably the most to lose demand that the politics, excuse making and dithering end and that you give the necessary support to the men and women who are bearing the battle and taking the fight to our enemies. I am not asking, I am telling you to listen to those with the knowledge and skills that can turn the tide of this rapidly resurgent enemy we face and to give them the resources they ask for.

He added that the video "shows what little value these people have for human life," in a recorded commentary posted on la Repubblica's website. "The thing that strikes you," he said, "is the absolute serenity of the killer."

Tell me again how the "free market" is the best way to manage health-care delivery, part II: health insurance and rape victims

Of course, the truth that very few people want to say out loud is that for-profit insurance companies are actually doing the smart thing by denying coverage to sexual-assault victims. If you've been raped, you're probably going to require expensive one-on-one therapy and who knows what other sorts of treatment. You're a bad risk. Why not deny coverage? At least, that's how it looks to me. Someone can explain to me if I'm getting it wrong somehow.

America will never be a land of opportunity for all, as long as its population can be successfully divided into "subcultures," some of which are willing to be herded like sheep. Any portion of the population that accepts such a role can expect to be methodically trodden down in perpetuity."

Rein in entitlements? No. Increase them, says James Galbraith.

COMMENTARY | October 08, 2009 It's time the press stopped falling for false, ongoing efforts to portray Social Security and Medicare as going broke, says economist James Galbraith. To the contrary, increases in entitlement program benefits would provide a major boost to economic recovery. For reporters and editors Galbraith's message is: Separate propaganda from facts.

"a bitterness has infected our politics that has weakened our country..."
egoldstein
by egoldstein  10-3-2009    2
Some excellent commentary by Joe Scarborough, including a fresh, non-partisan perspective on President Obama’s attempt to get the Olympic games in Chicago. I hope/believe that those who follow this approach to politics and partisanship will emerge as the powerful class in Congress. I fully understand that right now those who talk loudest and criticize most harshly get the spotlight. But i think most Americans are pretty tired of it and desensitized to it. It seems to me that most people are looking for leaders who will vigorously and rationally debate the issues - but do so in a way that shows that country comes before party.

What any prosecutor or defense attorney will tell you about jury deliberations … how long they’re out doesn’t necessarily tell you anything. It could mean they are trying really hard to convince themselves that abandonment will work … and to find a way to convince America and the world that an easy out is the considered, sensible thing to do. Or it could be that they know what they need to do, they are just afraid to do it. Afraid of the consequences of angering their anti-war lefty base, afraid of remaining committed to a war with a horizon past 2010 and 2012. But that’s about as charitable and optimistic a view as is possible, and assumes they actually want to find a way to do the right thing. Unfortunately, there has been little to indicate that is what they are interested in doing. What makes this less like jury deliberations and more like a Shakespearean tragedy, though, is that every now and then, a major player sticks his head out to shout something.

Who Is And Isn't Qualified To Speak On Global Warming?
merrie
by merrie  9-28-2009
This is different than the Times’ (and others’) treatment of and lack of interest in the academic training of the individual regularly cited without such “just an economist” commentary as a leading and essentially unimpeachable authority, the economist and former railway engineer Rajendra Pachauri. The Times has even hailed Pachauri in the past as the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s chief “climatologist”. Climatology is a specialty field if ever there was one but a qualification which Pachauri, for all of his other virtues toiling for years in the UN vineyards, attained by virtue of being appointed to head the IPCC. This is unfairly disparate treatment. Read more http://biggovernment.com/2009/09/25/who-is-and-isnt-qualified-to-speak-on-global-warming/#more-8630

Mr. Wehner served in the Reagan and George H.W. Bush Administrations prior to becoming deputy director of speechwriting for President George W. Bush in 2001. In 2002, he was asked to head the Office of Strategic Initiatives, where he generated policy ideas, reached out to public intellectuals, published op-eds and essays, and provided counsel on a range of domestic and international issues. Prior to joining the Bush Administration, Wehner was executive director for policy for Empower America, a conservative public-policy organization. Mr. Wehner also served as a special assistant to the director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy and, before that, as a speechwriter for then-Secretary of Education Bill Bennett.

Durga Puja is coming up. Swami Sivananda says: do not sacrifice animals for Devi
enbar
by enbar  9-26-2009
Commentary from Swami Sivananda, founder of the Divine Life society, on the observance of Durga Puja. Traditionally, animal sacrifice has often been a part of the ritual, but Sivananda declares this a violation of the principle of ahimsa, which is binding on all Hindus no matter what caste, jati, or situation they belong to. An interesting example of second-order discourse in contemporary non-Western religion.
