POPSThis Mob Is Big in Japan Most Americans think of Japan as a law-abiding and peaceful place, as well as our staunch ally, but reporting on the underworld gave me a different perspective.

POPSOnion Study: 74% Of Children Tenting Out In Yard Don't Make It Through The Night More: "Children should know, however, that if they hear scratching on the side of their tent, it's probably just their older brother trying to scare them," Fredericks said. "And if the scratching suddenly stops, it's most likely because their parents have gone insane and crept up from behind with this really demonic look in their eyes and slit his throat." As dire as these findings may appear, Fredericks claimed there was one way for children camping outdoors to escape their fate. "If they are able to avoid being bitten by poisonous spiders crawling around inside their sleeping bag, can keep all their fingers and toes crossed long enough to ward off Sister Mary, and manage to run back home without the inbred family of cannibal people seeing them first, they may actually stand a chance," said Fredericks, an eerie smile forming on his lips…

POPSTrue-life heros in comic books - Great! To Shimizu, who as a boy repeatedly encountered discrimination and “uncomfortable, unpleasant remarks” about his South Korean background, these were every bit as important as the more serious manga that taught him about politics, history, philosophy and romance. “In Japan, we receive information about everything through manga,” Shimizu says. “Manga is not just a genre, it’s a medium. So I knew the power of this storytelling vehicle.” Now he’s harnessing that power to tell the inspiring stories of true-life heroes like civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., former South African president Nelson Mandela and Myanmar’s pro-democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi.

POPSBrilliant Cartoon. Anti-Semitic or anti-Zionist?! Oliphant's political cartoon about the Israel-Gaza conflict has sparked a predictable uproar from ADL, who see the cartoon as anti-Semitic. How does one respond to the sight of a Star of David mutant with giant teeth and one evil eye fixated on a defenceless tiny woman, holding a baby? I'm confident that its message is anti-Israel, not anti-Semitic. Israel is obviously the jack-booted headless figure carrying the sword and Star of David as weapons. The jack-boots and goose-stepping are meant to provoke the reader with comparisons to a Nazi storm-trooper. Right?

POPSPinup Icon Bettie Page Dies at 85 At her website , Page's lawyer Mark Roesler released this short statement: With deep personal sadness I must announce that my dear friend and client Bettie Page passed away at 6:41pm PST this evening in a Los Angeles hospital. She died peacefully but had never regained consciousness after suffering a heart attack nine days ago. She captured the imagination of a generation of men and women with her free spirit and unabashed sensuality. She is the embodiment of beauty. As I said before, it's all temporary. Luckily for us, the photos are not. Page most recently (re)gained attention for the 2005 bio-pic, The Notorious Bettie Page , with Gretchen Mol.
