A Kilo of Metal Removed From A Peruvian Man's Stomach

Now "he is being examined by mental health specialists". I wonder if he was practicing to get into a circus or some kind of "freak show". I have read about people who allegedly could eat metal - don't ask me where or even when I read that, it is all mixed it with the other zillions of bits of trivial information that gets collected in my brain. :-)

It wasn't "rape-rape" that Polanski committed, it was the other kind of rape. The less "rapey" kind that's more ok than the full-on "rape-rape" kind of rape.

Viking Treasure Hoard

more (at source): The hoard – which includes a silver cup estimated to be worth more than £200,000, as well as 617 coins and various silver fragments, ingots and rings, will go on display in both York and in the capital after careful conservation work which began a month ago. Experts hope the process will reveal crucial details about the Viking era. Initial examinations suggest the treasure dates to 927 or 928. Conservation experts have already revealed remarkable insights: the cup, which has been gilded inside and out, is most likely to have belonged in a church, with vines decorating its exterior – a Viking symbol of Christ. Some of the coins shed new light on the period – parts of Britain such as Staffordshire and Yorkshire were already believed lost by the Vikings and under Anglo-Saxon dominion, yet there are coins which show the Vikings were still creating their own currency in these regions. One such coin, with the word "Rorivacastr" on it, is believed to have originated from

Nymph Sanctuary Found
cakebelly
by cakebelly  7-30-2009
Nope, it's not at Johnny Depp's house. more: Nymph worshiping, according to the archaeologists, can be traced back to Ancient Greece, where the mythical female creatures were usually part of the retinue of a god, such as Zeus, Hera and Aphrodite. Although planned archaeological excavations are currently taking place at the nearby Nicopolis ad Istrum ancient site, the sanctuary was discovered by chance. Workers came upon the archaeological remains while installing a water pipe to the village of Resen, which called for the emergency excavations to begin, Thaindian News explained.

Is Bartering Returning As Another Option In Our Lives?
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  6-6-2009    1
It used to be the way of the world before we believed in gold, or metal coins, and paper money. With the economy on shaky ground is this a glimpse into a new sustainable economic solution to global warming and related problems? Recycling used to also be very much a part of our way of life. I remember living in New Zealand and was amaze at how they would fix and fix and fix stuff and keep it going seemingly forever. Modern economic survival has contaminated that and basically made it too expensive for people to fix and reuse items. Parts for simple faults cost more than replacing the item. No wonder the world can often feel like one big rubbish dump, rather than the wondrous, beautiful living planet that it IS.

Communities print their own currency to keep cash flowing
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  6-21-2009    1
Its an attempt to keep money within the local community, which works to help the merchants and the local citizenry. About a dozen communities have local currencies. The idea came about during the depression and is generally favored by local government. The one caveat is that the currency cannot claim to be or be perceived to be U.S. currency. U.S. Treasury agents feel that von Nothaus and others crossed this line when they stamped coins (Liberty Dollar) instead of paper ‘money’. The U.S. Department of Justice has charged the men with fraud and conspiracy. In a bill of indictment filed when they were arrested, the word "counterfeit" never appears. Authorities say the coins too closely resemble actually US currency by using the dollar sign, burning torch and crowned head. Also troublesome is the inclusion on some coins of the words "Trust in God".

E-Money (That’s What I Want)
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  6-2-2009
There is a host of reasons why we should adopt a “cashless” society: 1-the cost of printing bills and stamping coins (in 2008 taxpayers paid $848 million to print hundreds of billions of dollars worth of bills, two thirds of that went to minting coins that most of us find is a nuisance to handle.) 2-more than 14,823 tons of zinc, 23,879 tons of copper, and 2,514 tons of nickel went into making coins last year. 3-cash is germ-smeared, bulky, carbon-intensive and expensive. Two years ago, card-based payments exceeded paper-based ones – cash, checks, food stamps – for the first time. The most efficient method of commerce would be to use the cell phone as a point-of-sale terminal which would lend itself to bartering. Imagine paying for a beer with frequent flier miles. Killing currency wouldn’t be a trauma, it’s be euthanasia.
