POPS'Torturer's Dicks got Hard with New Ideas'. She didn't have a Dick!
On December 2, Detainee 063 was in an isolated, plywood interrogation booth at Camp X-Ray. He was bolted to the floor and secured to a chair, his hands and legs cuffed. He had been held in isolation since August 8, nearly four months earlier. He was dehydrated and in need of regular hook-ups to an intravenous drip. His feet were swollen. He was urinating on himself. The pattern was always the same: 20-hour interrogation sessions, followed by four hours of sleep. Sleep deprivation appears as a central theme, along with stress positions and constant humiliation, including sexual humiliation. These techniques were supplemented by the use of water, regular bouts of dehydration, the use of IV tubes, loud noise, nudity, female contact, pin-ups. An interrogator even tied a leash to him, led him around the room and forced him to perform a series of dog tricks. He was forced to wear a woman's bra and a thong was placed on his head. POPSThinking ahead: Bacteria anticipate coming changes in their environment To test this idea, the researchers exposed a population of E. coli to different temperatures and oxygen changes, and measured the gene responses in each case. The results were striking: An increase in temperature had nearly the same effect on the bacterium's genes as a decrease in oxygen level. Indeed, upon transition to a higher temperature, many of the genes essential for aerobic respiration were practically turned off. To prove that this is not just genetic coincidence, the researchers then grew the bacteria in a biologically flipped environment where oxygen levels rose following an increase in temperature. Remarkably, within a few hundred generations the bugs partially adapted to this new regime, and no longer turned off the genes for aerobic respiration when the temperature rose.

POPS"How Your Brain Can Control Time ??" "Even in a healthy brain, time is elastic. Staring at an angry face for five seconds feels longer than staring at a neutral one. It may be no coincidence that the pulse-generating neurons are directly wired into regions of the brain that handle emotionally charged sights and sounds. And recent experiments by Amelia Hunt at Harvard University hint that we may actually backdate our mental time line every time we move our eyes."

POPSone step closer to building artificial human brain Markram believes that with the state of technology today, it is possible to build an entire rat's neocortex, which is the next phase of the Blue Brain project, due to begin next year. From there, it's cats, then monkeys and finally, a human brain. Markram is banking on Moore's law holding steady, as a computer with the power of the human brain, using today's technology, would take up several football pitches and run up an electricity bill of $3bn a year. But by the time Markram gets around to mimicking a full human brain, computing will have moved on.

POPSPlanet and star in puzzling waltz Instead, the system might have started out that way. "It could be a coincidence, but I don't like explanations based on coincidence," says Aigrain. She suggests that magnetic fields might have helped to lock the system together, but stresses that it is pure speculation at this point. During its mission, COROT should discover many more planets. Aigrain and her colleagues hope they will then have a better idea whether synchronised systems are common, and what causes the phenomenon.

POPSBrain 'imaging' in the Renaissance So were these master artists of the Renaissance trying to hide images of anatomically correct brains in their religious work? Why would they do it? Were they trying to put science into religion without getting caught? Or is this just one big coincidence? Maybe the four scientists that wrote the article need to take a break from the neurosciences. What do you think?<<

POPS How crises Point to a Better Future "Transitions announce themselves in the language of crisis. We are in a time of turbulence as old patterns give way and new ones form. The multiple crises today signal a system transformation operating at the scale of the planet. Transformation is distinct from adaptation, which is the normal process of incremental adjustment to new conditions. Transformations are rare moments in history when dominant societal structures cannot cope with emerging developments and change in fundamental ways. With the converging lines of crises we face today, we may be entering a perfect storm of destabilizing stress."

POPSThe little bastard >> And at what should have been the end of the story of the tragic death of a Hollywood legend, the story gets really weird and an urban legend was born. You see, despite his earlier misgivings that the car gave off a "weird feeling of impending doom", George Barris decided to sell pieces of the car off. Even after it fell and broke a mechanic's leg while they were unloading it after George purchased it. George sold the engine and drive train to two doctors, Dr. Troy McHenry and Dr. William Eschrid. They each used the parts in their own racing cars and planned to race in the upcoming car race at the Pomona Fair Grounds in CA. And in a race marked with doom, each of them crashed. Dr. Eschrid lost control of his car and almost lost his life when his car overturned. Dr. McHenry did lose his live when he lost control and had a bad crash. Was it just coincidence or were even the parts from the Spyder somehow tainted? <<

POPSWhy is fast food so cheap? "Many consumers would like to support skilled farmers who produce healthy products, are good stewards of their land, work to preserve clean water and open spaces around our communities, and are contributing to a secure food system. Our representatives need to know this is the kind of farming we want to support with our tax dollars in the new 2007 Farm Bill. " See source for links, information and opportunities for change. POPSThe Silence of the Bilderbergs For a long time, people who spoke of the Bilderbergs or the New World Order, were considered "conspiracy theorists". Here in DK, the whole can of worms has gone very public. Our mainstream media, bloggers, politicians etc are all finally starting to wonder, what the heck is going on. Our PM is facing some tough questions, questions he refuses to answer. Follow each of the links clipped from, to get a general idea of what's going on. Today, in my opinion, the ones we should be laughing at, are the "coincidence theorists". ------ Explanations: The "Folketing" is our Parliament. Jyllands Posten is one of the country's largest print newpapers. * The missing "minutes" is a wrong translation. The word referat means report, or summary.

POPSCheney Appears to Want War With Iran Dick Cheney and Joe Lieberman have been working their neo-con agenda very hard with Bush. Many believe this is why Bush has named the Iranian Guard and terrorist organization. Thankfully, Condi Rice is against such action, as is Secretary Gates. But Cheney has a way of getting what he wants out of Bush, and from all indications, he is being quite relentless in his pursuit of war with Iran.

POPSUS Presidents subverting US Laws isn't unique to Bush
NED was created in 1983, ostensibly as a non-profit-making organisation to promote human rights and democracy. In 1991 its first president, the historian Allen Weinstein, confessed to The Washington Post: "A lot of what we do today was done covertly 25 years ago by the CIA" The funded organisations sometimes managed to weaken and even eliminate opposition to friendly governments, while creating a climate favourable to US interests. Although legally an NGO, the NED was funded from the State Department budget, subject to congressional approval. As well as allowing the government to disclaim any formal responsibility, this offered a further strategic advantage. As former State Department official William Blum said: "Notice the non-governmental - this helps to maintain a certain credibility abroad that an official US government agency might not have." NED's talent for channelling money, establishing NGOs, electoral manipulation and media brainwashing was due to the CIA, the State

POPSWho won't shed a tear In time, their respective spouses died. With the demise of the Soviet Union, Anna was once more able to travel home. Then came the chance reunion. “I felt the same when we met last year,” Boris said. “I couldn’t take my eyes off her. Yes I had loved other women when we were separated. But she was the true love of my life.” He suggested they marry again. Anna resisted, but says he talked her round. “What’s the point, I said, we can just live together they rest of our lives? But he insisted. I never thought I’d be a bride at my age but it was my happiest wedding

POPS'Obama Sued in Philadelphia Federal Court' "If", and that's a BIG IF, this isn't all some kind of hoax or a simple case of the Obama campaign not having provided the correct information or certificate, or there's some other legitimate explanation, all hell is about to break out in the Obama campaign and Hillary Clinton will have pulled off a hell of a coup! Update; Factcheck.org (owned by The Annenberg Foundation) has a new birth certificate story. As Texasdarlin suggests in her post, this is interesting timing since Obama has just returned from Hawaii. Indeed, what a coincidence that it's today! Update on Federal Lawsuit (Things may be getting more interesting) (As TD suggests, are there links worth investigating between the Barack Obama campaign, William Ayres, the Annenbergs, and ACORN.) POPSIs it really just a co-incidence ? The story is about choir practice at a church. A few other details. There had never before been a choir practice where all members were late. They were due at 7:20, but most were usually there by 7:15. Often co-incidences that can seem uncanny are in fact urban Myths. Those who can verify the co-incidence, include the members of the choir, and the fire department. It is suspected the explosion was the result of a gas leaka gas leak.

POPSEurope's 'Earth Explorer' to Map Planet "Inside Out" From Space The five hundred million dollar satellite is expected to survive for 20 months - at twenty-five million a month that makes it even higher maintenance than Paris Hilton, but infinitely more useful. Data provided by the satellite will map everything from ocean depths to the magma core of the planet, providing data of unprecedented accuracy for everything from climate physics to geophysics. In an interesting coincidence, GOCE will be launched on the same day the Large Hadron Collider powers up. Project leader Kal-El urges readers not to pay too much attention to this, nor ask why the nose cone seems to be full of diapers and a red cape.

POPSSorry, Tea Leaves Indicate a Leaking Teabag To get to the meat of this issue you'll have to delve deeper than this clip. Consider this clip a teaser only. So, you've had an "experience" that made you a believer? These are as common as dirt. What most people forget are the untold "misses" they've experienced in their lives. It's similar to the positive hits from prayer that gives believers such faith that their cosmic begging stuff is actually working! Read the piece and open your eyes. It takes a bit of effort but you'll find that you'll be able to see much better afterwards.

POPSDr. Death' served us all with time in prison We should have a choice. I think of many people who have money and seem to be able to time their death with family and friends all gathered around. I suspect that this is not just a coincidence. One example was Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
