LARGE HADRON COLLIDER. Will it destroy the universe?
vk2yoc
by vk2yoc  2-13-2008    9
The idea dates back to Einstein's explanation that spacetime can be deformed by large energies or masses. Since the Large Hadron Collider is a twenty-six kilometer ring of superconducting magnets designed to do nothing but give a particle as large an energy as possible, that sounds like it could be an issue. Small deformations in spacetime (like Earth) give us the force of gravity, severe deformations give the cosmological trash compacting black holes, and an extreme case could cause a wormhole - a link between two points as spacetime folds over to touch itself (no sniggering).

Uncaging my joy
bignosemousie
by bignosemousie  8-28-2008    4
I decided last week that I would like to live more generously. I find that I clutch things (my money, my time, my love) too closely to my breast, and this is from fear. My fear cripples my joy. I am going to uncage my joy.

Role of the brain in making people more likely to overeat
einbar
by einbar  12-15-2008    3
Obesity: Gene discovery suggests some people are hardwired to overeat The discovery of six genes that raise the risk of obesity highlights the role of the brain in making people more likely to overeat fat obese overweight Five of the six newly discovered genes are active in the brain, suggesting appetite plays a larger part in obesity than metabolism.

Why Men Should Never Wear Tights
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  11-22-2008    12
“Men have great legs, and hosiery is a great way to show them. It’s quite practical in some ways. It prevents chafing, for example, when horse riding or cycling.” But I would just say to any man thinking of embracing the 20 denier that having to wear tights is one of the very worst things about being a woman. Still, if you don’t mind an itchy crackle-fest around your nether regions, then please be my guest. Oh, and don’t expect your tights to be much of a chick-magnet. In fact, I’d say that mantyhose is probably the perfect gift for the man who never wants to get laid again.

Oil Crisis Triggers Secret Plans For Acquisition Of World's Seabeds
merrie
by merrie  5-27-2008    4
"If the British do not change their approach, we shall have to interpret it as aggression," said President Nestor Kirchner. The forgotten relics of the Empire make Britain a player in the marine race. There are the waters off the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, already home to a clutch of oil exploration companies; the Pitcairn Islands in the Pacific; Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean; and a string of outposts such as Montserrat, the Caymans, the British Virgin Islands, the Turks and Caicos, and Bermuda. The two-page summary of Britain's submission to the UN gives little away. It merely notes that the UK is providing information on the limits of shelf "beyond 200 nautical miles", adding that there will be further requests.

I managed to translate the lyrics to this silly song, with Google and a friend that claims to know something. Let me know if you know better Laugh : I don't need anybody On a Harley Davidson Nobody On a Harley Davidson I squeeze the clutch And leave the ground I'll go to heaven, But in a train to hell. I don't need anybody On a Harley Davidson Nobody On a Harley Davidson And if I die tomorrow It was my destiny I wish much less for life Than my terrible engine's I don't need anybody On a Harley Davidson I don't need anybody On a Harley Davidson When I feel the way The juddering of my machine, I climbed desires In my guts I don't need anybody On a Harley Davidson I don't need anybody On a Harley Davidson I go to more than one hundred, And I'm filled with fire and blood, Let me die The wind in my hair Let me die The wind in my hair And that would explain the crazy hair tossing...

Sports Icons --- The Redeem Team Wins Gold
merrie
by merrie  8-28-2008
 * Their patriotism. In nearly every interview, James and Bryant said how proud they were to be representing America. * Clutch play. We knew the Americans could win blowouts, and indeed most of the games were decided early. When the Redeem Team led Argentina by 20 points in the first quarter, you knew the outcome was not in doubt. * Teamwork and talent. Nobody hogged the ball. Wade said winning the gold showed that NBA stars could play with that same level of teamwork. They unquestionably did. There's also a time for great individual players to call for the ball and carry their team to victory, as Bryant did to turn back Spain. * Inspired picks. Chris Bosh was awfully scrawny to match up against European and South American teams. But he played brilliantly. I wasn't sure about Chris Paul at point guard either. Turns he's a world-class player. * Coaching. The hardest thing to get great basketball players to do is play defense. Yet Coach Mike Krzyzewski got the team to do just

Ambitious Project: find two unknown species of fish each week
haraya
by haraya  12-12-2006    1
The discoveries have been coming to the surface at the rate of two species of fish unknown to science each week. And the scientists believe that they are still far from documenting all the different marine species. Advanced sonar equipment that can map oceanic areas 10,000 times larger than previously possible recently detected a shoal of eight million fish in a school the size of Manhattan off the coast of New Jersey. Images of the shoal revealed it pulsating, fragmenting and reforming as the fish moved through the water. When the census is completed it will form a snapshot of ocean life that scientists will use as a reference to monitor the impact of the fishing industry and environmental change.
