POPSOhio School Suspends 8th Grader Over Haircut Ohio is one of those weird places that makes me glad I grew up in Illinois. Apparently, in Ohio, school students are distracted by the simplest of things - like this 8th grade boy's haircut, showing off his support of the Cincinnati Bengals. So distracting, in fact, the boy's school district suspended him. Google this story and you will find that Ohio has a noticeable history of suspending kids as young as Kindergärtner-age for "unacceptable" hairstyles. What does Ohio have against unusual hair styles? Perhaps, they simply aren't aware of just how bad hair styles can become, so I decided this morning to give the state a little education in the 50 worst hairstyles of all time. After reviewing these 50 "do's," I think it's clear that Ohio should count its lucky stars that this young boy is just a sports fan.

POPSCalif. Lawyer Who Challenged Obama Citizenship Fined $20,000
For those of you who haven't had the pleasure of watching one of her press conferences, then you can't truly appreciate the "train wreck" that is Orly Taitz, Attorney-at-Law. Ms. Taitz is a leader in the so-called "Birther Movement," the movement that challenges President Obama's right to hold office on the grounds that he is not a U.S. citizen. The ABA Journal Law News Now reports that a federal judge in Georgia fined Taitz $20,000 for her wild accusations in court and ordered her not to pursue any further frivolous actions in court - ever. In my opinion, this should render Taitz unable to practice law. Not to be dissuaded, Taitz filed a motion for reconsideration the next day. This motion was apparently denied, the judge writing, “Counsel’s wild accusations may be protected by the First Amendment when she makes them on her blog or in her press conferences, but the federal courts are reserved for hearing genuine legal disputes, not as a platform for political rhetoric and

POPS9/11 Commission's Sr. Counsel Says Official Story Untrue, Gov't Officials Lied Farmer states...“at some level of the government, at some point in time…there was an agreement not to tell the truth about what happened... I was shocked at how different the truth was from the way it was described ….The tapes told a radically different story from what had been told to us and the public for two years. This is not spin.” So much for those who quote the 9/11 Commission report and regard government testimonies as entirely true. The article was written by a Marine veteran.

POPSActual Tea Party Quotes So one of them is blaming Obama for two wars that started under Bush and a law that was both passed and renewed under Bush. Then we have a couple who claims that Democrats everywhere are "demonizing" the troops. Now, there may well be fringe activists within the Democratic Party who do such things, but Democratic politicians? Especially when a Democratic president wants to commit more troops to one of the wars? The fact that a piece like this, which seems to be trying hard to be favorable to the Tea Party goers, couldn't find more coherent people to quote gives me real pause.

POPSVoight: Is Obama creating a civil war in America? ""Do not let the Obama administration fool you with all their cunning Alinsky methods. And if you don't know what that method is, I implore you to get the book 'Rules for Radicals,' by Saul Alinsky. Mr. Obama is very well trained in these methods," he continues, citing a television campaign critical of the Republican Party and contentious town-hall meetings about health care reform. "The real truth is that the Obama administration is professional at bullying, as we have witnessed with ACORN at work during the presidential campaign. It seems to me they are sending down their bullies to create fist fights among average American citizens who don't want a government-run health care plan forced upon them," Mr. Voight says. "So I ask again. Is President Obama creating a civil war in our own country?""

POPSBunnies reunite to help soldiers From left, Kat Gray, Lois Power and Lynn Molitor, who were all playboy bunnies at the Cincinnati club in the early 1980s. Money raised at the reunion will benefit the Northern Kentucky Blue Star Mothers, the local chapter of a national organization that raises funds to purchase Goodie Boxes for U.S. soldiers serving and fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

POPSMy Organizing for Astroturfing, er America Adventure
(Never mind that the email refers to “health reform” and “insurance reform,” which, last time I checked, are different things.) So I went to the OFA website and found this sign-up form (red box at link added by me). It informed me of the 2nd District Republican’s office hours, address, and phone number, and asked me to select a time to visit. You’ll notice that the form also required me to provide my phone number, “so that an organizer can follow up with you.” How thoughtful. Separately, in keeping with the spirit of the OFA email, I “cooked up” the idea of also visiting the office of 1st District Rep. Steve Driehaus, whose district’s boundary is about ten miles away from the BizzyBlog bunker. Driehaus is, at least in theory, one of the “on the fence” Blue Dog Democrats. At an August 4 town hall meeting that made national news, he got an earful from those opposed to the plan and told those who attended that he hasn’t decided how he will vote. . . .

POPSCarvings From Cherokee Script’s Dawn more (at source): It may be, as is often noted, that his achievement is the only known instance of an individual’s single-handedly creating an entirely new system of writing. An archaeologist and explorer of caves has now found what he thinks are the earliest known examples of the Sequoyah syllabary. The characters are cut into the wall of a cave in southeastern Kentucky, a place sacred to the Cherokee as the traditional burial site of a revered chief. The archaeologist, Kenneth B. Tankersley of the University of Cincinnati, said in an interview recently that this was “one of the most fascinating and important finds in my career,” yielding likely insights into “the genius of Sequoyah.”

POPS Honoring Satchel Paige On Saturday in Cincinnati, baseball will stage its Civil Rights Game, an event created three years ago to draw attention to the game’s racial legacy, which pre-1947 meant players of color were excluded from wearing a big-league uniform.
