Census of Marine Life
ofcapri
by ofcapri  11-23-2009
Five of the Census’ 14 field projects plumb the ocean beyond sunlight, each dedicated to the study of life in progressively deeper realms – from the continental margins (COMARGE: Continental Margins Ecosystems) to the spine-like ridge running down the mid-Atlantic (MAR-ECO: Mid-Atlantic Ridge Ecosystem Project), the submerged mountains rising from the seafloor (CenSeam: Global Census of Marine Life on Seamounts), the muddy floor of ocean plains (CeDAMar: Census of Diversity of Abyssal Marine Life), and the vents, seeps, whale falls and chemically-driven ecosystems found on the margins of mid-ocean ridges and in the deepest ocean trenches (ChEss: Biogeography of Deep-Water Chemosynthetic Systems).

Of course, Osama thinks he’s a loser. Now even the IAEA is making him look like an a-hole. That’s pretty bad. On the very day when he makes his big peace-in-our-time Neville Chamberlain chess move. via Breitbart: Iran has the ability to make an A-bomb and is developing a missile to carry it. That’s before we get to the domestic part. The big question looming now is, how soon do we hit the tipping point where he starts to make Jimmy look good? At the risk of sounding like one of the kids on a long car ride … are we there yet?

of all accusations with facts backing up the statements. From the opening summary: “Since 1994, more than $53 million in federal funds have been pumped into ACORN, and under the Obama administration, ACORN stands to receive a whopping $8.5 billion in available stimulus funds. Operationally, ACORN is a shell game played in 120 cities, 43 states and the District of Columbia through a complex structure designed to conceal illegal activities, to use taxpayer and tax-exempt dollars for partisan political purposes, and to distract investigators. Structurally, ACORN is a chess game in which senior management is shielded from accountability by multiple layers of volunteers and compensated employees who serve as pawns to take the fall for every bad act.” This is not the first time ACORN has been investigated. The Consumers Rights League, a non-partisan organization, did an extensive in-depth investigation into ACORN Housing and their mortgage practices in 2008 which they . . .

Top 10 Greatest Chess Players in History
xpersianx
by xpersianx  9-6-2009
There is no doubt that throughout the history of chess there have been many superb players who have reshaped and redefined the way the game is played. This list is an attempt to examine and categorize the greatest of those. No doubt there are many worthy names that could be added, but here is the Top 10 who I believe have rightly earned their places as the greats. The criterion used is based upon a number of factors including dominance over contemporaries, length of career at the top, contributions to chess and individual flair and brilliance. Please note this is not a head to head of who would beat who, as most modern professional players would dominate the forefathers of yesteryear due to developments in Chess Theory, but a historical look at the greats.

Becoming great at what you do
Richclips777
by Richclips777  6-13-2009    2
Many of these scientists are now saying that “targeted” natural gifts do not exist at all. You are not born a CEO or chess grandmaster. Rather, greatness is achieved by hard, focused work over many years. Charlie Parker, widely considered one of the most influential of Jazz musicians, showed no sign of musical talent as a child. He started playing saxophone at age 11, and was thrown out of his high school band because he was so bad. But this drove him to practice intensively for many years, for four years up to 15 hours a day. It was many years after that before he was noticed. Tiger Woods started practicing golf at 18 months, and was encouraged to practice by his father. He had been practicing intensively for 15 years before winning the U.S. Amateur Championship at age 18. But you and I both know people who work very hard. Many work for decades at a job or hobby without approaching greatness. Why don’t they become “world class”, then? It turns out that it’s not just hard w
