The Sad Illusion Of Happy Customers
debbyski
by debbyski  11-11-2009    10
Best Buy is not being picked on here, it could be them or anyone else. As a regular part of my work I have to trudge through large retail stores all the time and my biggest complaint is the lack of help. If you want us to buy, then have enough informed sales people to help us and get us through the lines quicker! "It's not rocket science. To make customers happy, all you need to do is offer high-quality goods at competitive prices and staff your stores with a sufficient number of well-trained personnel to ensure a smooth shopping experience."

WH: “FOX News Wing of the Republican Party”
merrie
by merrie  10-12-2009    1
Of course they were......Do these people even live in reality? What about when CNN Protected Dear Leader Obama by fact checking Saturday Night Live? Then there was CNN’s Susan Roesgen display of hypocritical superciliousness. And lest we forget there was Janeane Garofalo’s appearance on Keith Olberman. The actress went on to bash the GOP on MSNBC Thursday because it had “crystallized into the white power movement” as well as Fox News, which she said has captured the “Klan demo .” Yep all networks other than FOX are completely unbiased. As long as the Obama admin keeps pretending that is the case, all will be well in the Obama fantasy land of unicorns and rainbows. I am not saying FOX does not tend to lean right but what I am saying is that all the rest mostly lean left. H/T Freedom Eden Transcript excerpts courtesy of: NewsBusters

The roving runner goes barefoot
Lexica
by Lexica  10-9-2009
More: Web sites on barefoot running recommend starting slowly to acclimate your feet, and they are right. Although I wasn’t feeling any pain during the run, my feet were indeed hurting a bit the next day on the top and outside. But it felt more like the soreness of underused muscles rather than an injury. As for the soles of my feet, they were fine… My facial muscles felt a bit tired, but that was from smiling most of the way. I’m not sure if it was the liberating feeling of running barefoot, or chatting with an author whose book I had just devoured, or if I was just enjoying other runners’ reactions to two guys running barefoot in Central Park, but this was fun, just as running should be. Near the end of our run, as we passed Tavern on the Green, a runner sidled up alongside us. “You guys enjoying your barefoot run?” he asked. Sure are, we responded. “Well listen, there’s this book you have to check out,” he said. “It’s called ‘Born to Run.’”

What any prosecutor or defense attorney will tell you about jury deliberations … how long they’re out doesn’t necessarily tell you anything. It could mean they are trying really hard to convince themselves that abandonment will work … and to find a way to convince America and the world that an easy out is the considered, sensible thing to do. Or it could be that they know what they need to do, they are just afraid to do it. Afraid of the consequences of angering their anti-war lefty base, afraid of remaining committed to a war with a horizon past 2010 and 2012. But that’s about as charitable and optimistic a view as is possible, and assumes they actually want to find a way to do the right thing. Unfortunately, there has been little to indicate that is what they are interested in doing. What makes this less like jury deliberations and more like a Shakespearean tragedy, though, is that every now and then, a major player sticks his head out to shout something.

Anatomy of a Soccer [Football] Player
clip-on-tie

Of course, nobody is saying that football hooliganism is cool, what really gets our goat is that while TV networks will report on instances of hooliganism, they never have the nuance to tell us who won. For those of us who like to watch football riots, the only way of judging is by measuring which side conceded the most arrests. The higher the arrest count, the more honorable the victory.

Polls show atheists on the rise in America
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  8-27-2009    57
The American Religious Identification Survey recently found the number of people who claimed “no religion” had nearly doubled nationally over the last 18 years, to 15 percent. They were the only demographic that increased in all 50 states. Some attribute the surge to outrage over former president George W. Bush and his courting of the religious right. Others mention a slew of best-selling books about atheism that have recently fueled debate. But there’s no doubt the Internet is playing a role too. It offers atheist dating services, and helps nonbelievers meet up — people who might otherwise remain “loners.” “I’m happy to attend any religious observances where the food is good,” said one non-believer. For others, atheism is a cause. Along with freethinking and agnostic groups, they are beginning to lobby Congress on everything from stem cell research to civil rights.

GQ’s Jim Nelson Frankly Talks About Race in His Editor’s Letter
zizzy
by zizzy  9-2-2009    1
Here are some of Nelson’s greatest hits: Then made his more ignorant racist claim yet: “This has been a country built basically by white folks.” Which, apart from ignoring the entire history of slavery, is the subtext of every song I’ve ever heard by Toby Keith. Fox News commen-hater Brian Kilmeade, while chatting about a Swedish study that shows marriage can delay Alzheimer’s suddenly went all Third Reich on his co-hosts: “We keep marrying other species and other ethnics. The Swedes have pure genes, because they marry other Swedes…They have a pure society. In America, we marry everybody. So we’ll marry Italians and Irish. does not apply to us. My Irish-English-German-American head spun. Does that mean I’m definitely getting Alzheimer’s?

June Hasn't Been This Nice Since ... 1913
merrie
by merrie  6-22-2009    2
Typically in June, high-pressure systems begin to form above the Valley. High pressure means clear skies and little wind. And, in June, clear skies let in the sunshine, sending the temperatures soaring. This June, though, has remained cool because of what Meyers called "a persistent area of low pressure off the West Coast." The low pressure has prevented the high-pressure systems from getting into place. Alas, all good things must come to an end. This weekend, the days will heat up. Temperatures are expected to be back in the 104-105 range by the middle of next week.

Mother caned in Bangladesh for talking to Hindu man
JackieDel
by JackieDel  6-9-2009
Women's rights groups say there has been a spike in the number of "fatwas" -- judgments in line with sharia law -- in rural areas. "In the last few months, we've seen villagers invoking sharia to mete out barbaric punishments to women," said lawyer Ali. "It's disturbing sign and a real concern. It shows some parts of the country are becoming more conservative," she said. Bangladesh has been ruled by female leaders for 16 of the last 19 years and prides itself for empowering women. But although women hold high government and private sector posts, a move last year to give equal property rights to women was scuttled by Islamist protests. The Awami League government has vowed to eradicate militancy from the country, hit by series of blasts by outlawed Islamic groups in 2005, and has warned of "zero tolerance" for harsh sharia punishments.

Waiting To Find Someone Else
debbyski
by debbyski  6-2-2009    4
"Even when she lived in Afghanistan, she did not wear a burka as her mother and sisters do. When she was 12, she said, she broke a cultural taboo by sitting with Afghan men to talk politics, encouraged by her father. She then raised $8,000 in a single night, selling home-cooked Afghan meals to American donors. She used the money to create the 100 Mothers Literacy Program to help educate women in her village. At first, there was resistance in Afghanistan, she said -- from village elders and the women themselves. The women said they were too old to learn and preferred that the money be used to build toilets. She said she feared Taliban insurgents or sympathizers would retaliate against them for teaching women -- considered apostasy by some Afghans. "My dad is one of the best dads ever," she said. "If he was a mean dad, it wouldn't be so hard to say no to him."

Making Light: Folksongs are your friends
Lexica
by Lexica  5-30-2009
More: Avoid navigable waterways. Don’t let yourself be talked into going down by the wild rippling water, the wan water, the salt sea shore, the strand, the lowlands low, the Burning Thames, and any area where the grass grows green on the banks of some pool. Cliffs overlooking navigable waterways aren’t safe either. Stay away from the greenwood side, too. If you look at the calendar and discover it’s May, stay home. If you are an unmarried lady and have sex, you will get pregnant. No good will come of it. If you are physically unable to get pregnant due to being male, the girl you had sex with will get pregnant. No good will come of it. You’ll either kill her, or she’ll kill herself, or her husband/brother/father/uncle/cousin will kill you both. In any case her Doleful Ghost will make sure everyone finds out. You will either get hanged, kill yourself, or be carried off bodily by Satan. Your last words will begin “Come all ye.” If your name is Janet, change it.
