Pelosi will let Rangel hold post despite latest allegations
jatfla
by jatfla  9-2-2009
FTA: There is also the danger of alienating members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), a large bloc of liberals in the Democratic Caucus. Many of them take pride in the fact that one of their members sits atop Ways and Means. Pelosi: Jan. 2006 ""It is long past time for the Congress to address the systemic Republican culture of corruption that has undermined the American people's confidence in this institution," Pelosi said. "I am proud that some of the best minds in our Caucus will be leading the Democratic effort to clean up the corrupt Republican Congress. These great leaders will work to restore truth and trust to the People's House." Hypocrite.

Dealing with the Christian Taliban
katsteevns
by katsteevns  5-8-2009    3
Before all of you folks start writing angry emails directed my way, give some thought as to just what the Christian Taliban are doing in this country today. They have openly called for a “Fatwah” against so-called “activist judges” and they openly defend hatred directed toward gays, as well as single women with children. They censure, with excommunication as well as other sanctions, anyone who strays from their dogmatic and narrow viewpoint.

Privilege and Oppression

by AtlLiberal  4-22-2009    4
A thoughtful article about the notion of Christian privilege and using this to justify anti-gay prejudice. And before some get their pitchforks out, no, it doesn't apply to all Christians. But there is a sizable chunk of Christians who probably do hold these views.

Total Hypocrisy! MoveOn.org Needs to Move On
merrie
by merrie  4-23-2009    4
The place for this to end is in the current White House, and it's interesting that the Barack Obama administration is "now open to theoretical torture investigations," precisely when a majority of Americans backs Tea Party protests against Democratic big-goverment taxing and spending policies. MoveOn.org was formed in 1998 as a lobbying group to support President Bill Clinton against GOP investigations into his personal conduct and corruption. The organization "started by passing around a petition asking Congress to 'censure President Clinton and move on', as opposed to impeaching him." Justice, fairness, and human rights are not at issue here. A rank power grab by one of America's greatest domestic enablers of terror is. MoveOn.org needs to move on, for the sake of the country, if not for its own credibility, since it has very little of that worth preseriving.

UN Human Rights Council Praises World's Worst Human Rights Abusers
merrie
by merrie  2-13-2009    8
"Human rights group, UN Watch, was equally critical. It attacked the council for being a 'mutual praise society, giving a free pass to the world’s worst abusers'".-- UN Watch featured in J.Stibbs, "Cuba blasted over rights abuses," Russia Today "...A representative for the group United Nations Watch, Hillel Neuer, notes the resolution dismisses the quantity and quality of Israeli suffering under Hamas terror..." -- L. Schlein, "UN Rights Council condemns Israeli action in Gaza ," Voice of America, Jan. 12, 2009. "...According to the UN Watch NGO, should the resolution pass, it would mark the 21st time that the council has censured Israel since it replaced the UN's Human Rights Commission in June 2006..." -- T. Can You Really Love Your Country?
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  9-29-2008    12
I support the innocent victims and the soldiers who were lied to and tricked into fighting in Iraq. But after the lies and evil were exposed and the truth came out , for all others who still choose to enlist and who still choose to pick up arms against innocent people and to knowingly aid in the occupation and devastation of an innocent sovereign nation ...then no. They get no sympathy from me. There's a big difference between being a soldier and being a mercenary. Few are willing to brave the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential, vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painful to change. There is pride in that, even arrogance, but there is also experience and truth. In any event, it is the only way we can live. - Senator Edward M. Kennedy,

The Keating Five
arnaz
by arnaz  8-29-2008
"Keating asked the five Senators to tell the feds to bug off, and the five Senators, later known as the Keating Five, obliged, meeting with federal investigators twice and pressuring them to stop investigating Keating’s crimes." "Keating blew $3.4 billion through illegal personal loans and bad investments, and the FDIC eventually had to reimburse Keating’s customers who had been ripped off. (The FDIC is a part of the federal government funded by taxpayers dollars, so when Keating stole from his customers you and I were the ones who paid for it.)" "Ever since the scandal, when McCain lies today, it’s never questioned, because he’s a “straight talker”. The man has more skeletons in his closet than any politician in history. The Keating Five is just one bone."

Demand The U.S. House Censure Rep. Delahunt NOW!
merrie
by merrie  6-29-2008    1
Also, more action alerts include: Tell YOUR Rep. to Co-Sponsor the "Affordable Gas Price Act" As usual, the government doesn't have a solution to the problem -- the government IS the problem! House bill H.R. 2415, short-titled the "Affordable Gas Price Act," was introduced on May 21, 2007. The official title of the bill states its purpose: "To reduce the price of gasoline by allowing for offshore drilling, eliminating Federal obstacles to constructing refineries and providing incentives for investment in refineries, suspending Federal fuel taxes when gasoline prices reach a benchmark amount, and promoting free trade." So for over a year now, Congress has had available to them legislation that reduces gas prices by reforming government polices that artificially inflate the price of gas. And not one of them has even had the guts to sign on as a co-sponsor.

Why The Silence on This Dictator?
Elisabeth Eaves
by Elisabeth Eaves  6-27-2008
Peter Maass writes on why we rarely hear U.S. criticism of Teodoro Obiang, the draconian ruler of Equatorial Guinea -- when we hear so much about Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe. Maass posits that it's because of U.S. oil investments in the West African nation. There's no doubt some truth to that notion. But it could also have to do with the strange ebbs and flows of the media. Britain's BBC has gone to extraordinary lengths to cover Zimbabwe, in part because it was a former British colony, which Equatorial Guinea was not. But more importantly, perhaps, is the fact that just about every news organization in the world that covers Africa on the ground has a correspondent in South Africa. Call it the Jerusalem effect: Sure, it's newsworthy. But there are more foreign correspondents per capita in Jerusalem than anywhere else in the world. So closer things get covered more, farther things not so much. And Equatorial Guinea is a long, long way away from the foreign press.

Why doing nothing may sometimes be the best action of all
Aribeth
by Aribeth  3-15-2008    26
By taking action — even if it’s neither rational nor likely to be successful — they can at least be seen to have done something. If they stand and wait until the ball is kicked and then fail to stop it, they feel worse because of their inaction; and others are far more likely to criticize them for not appearing even to try. It’s better to try a poor action than try a better — but seemingly passive — response if both fail; even though the “inactive” response is more rational and based on a better likelihood of success. In today’s business world, action is preferred over the alternatives and is more likely to result in forgiveness when a mistake is made. You can always say that you tried. The person who does nothing is doubly damned: once for the mistake and again for not “doing something.”This urge to action — to get things done — is more emotional than rational. “Wait and see” risks your credibility and reputation, even where it can be shown to be the optimal course.

A Plan to End the Crisis With Iran
ouyangwulong
by ouyangwulong  1-11-2008    7
Just so nobody can say I only criticize Bush, I offer here a plan to immediately end the crisis with Iran. Ahmadinejad is an aggressive, anti-Western president who is isolating Iran, much to the chagrin of the Iranians. The economy is weak, and it is getting harder for people to make a living, which is causing unrest. On the other hand, his predecessor Khatami was a progressive, who wanted relations with the west, and had a good record on the economy. I suggest that we use these factors in to our advantage in the following plan: (see comments bellow.)

Poll Says Chavez Loses Venezuela Referendum Lead
merrie
by merrie  11-25-2007
A student movement has emerged to lead the anti-Chavez campaign, amplifying the condemnation from traditional opposition parties, the Roman Catholic church, rights groups and the defectors who say the reforms are authoritarian. Chavez, who refuses to scrap term limits for other officials, would have to leave office in 2013 without the law change. He urged Venezuelans to see vote as a referendum on him. This year, Chavez has hurt his standing by shutting an opposition TV station and failing to end some food shortages. Amanda Aguilar, 17, was in line at 5:30 a.m. waiting for a food store to open to buy her single, rationed carton of milk. The student from Chavez's home-state of Barinas hopes the referendum will force him to change or force him out of office. "All this lining up ends come December 2," she said.

No matter how you feel about the current administration, we all should hope and pray this does not happen. The best case scenario would be for us to denounce the actions through either impeachment or at the least, censure. If not, it will not merely be the administration being tried, it will be the US as a whole for going along with it, not doing anything!

A Lone Senator Finally Has The Guts to Censure Bush But His Collegues Fail Him

Russ Feingold has the guts to introduce a bill of censure against Bush et al, and instead of doing their duty for the American people and following-up on this well deserved action, both the House and Senate are not going to back him up. They are too cowardly to do what the majority of the American people demands. I have no use for either party in the U.S. system of government. That county is now so lost, I do not know how we will ever find our way back to what we were intended to be, and lived up to for over 200 years.
