I want to believe in the power of smiles, hugs, a kind word, truth, dreams, the imagination, the Tooth Fairy, a kiss that makes a boo-boo go away, making angels in the snow, and that my dad and G-d are the strongest people in the world. There are a few more at the source. . :)

Your cell phone is a "roving bug"
enbar
by enbar  12-6-2006    8
According to this report, the FBI can activate a remote tracking and listening device built into every recently-made cell phone without having to modify or handle the phone physically. The only way to defeat the bug is to remove the phone's battery.

Photos from a trip across Siberia in January 2006, when the average temperature was -60F. Just thinking of this numbing cold makes my bones ache, but the photos are lovely. Grab a cup of your favorite warm beverage and take a look at these photos of winter in Siberia.

The Role of Light on Human Health
Mohir
by Mohir  7-16-2008
Rea envisions "real-time light prescriptions" to help people receive or avoid light at the appropriate times. Simple measures to control when and how much circadian light we receive could help nightshift workers stay alert on the job and sleep more effectively during the day, help cure jet lag, decrease depression, and generally help everyone get a proper night's sleep. The ability to modify circadian rhythm could potentially mitigate the negative health effects that some researchers believe are brought on by disruptions to the light-dark cycle. Recent studies have found a link between health and changes in the natural circadian rhythm. The Journal of the National Cancer Institute published a series of articles, for example, that showed night shift workers had a higher incidence of breast cancer; and, last year, the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer cited night work as a potential breast cancer risk factor.

Amazing Up-Close Footage of Oklahoma Tornado
Kore7
by Kore7  5-5-2007    4
I've been fascinated by tornadoes ever since I saw one form above me in person when I was a kid at the state fair in New Mexico. We were watching the funnel descend from the sky when they forced us into a concrete shelter nearby. My 10-year-old self was disappointed...I wanted to see what happened! This video has been getting played everywhere today. It's ridiculous how much danger these tornado chasers put themselves into!

Switching it up: How memory deals with a change in plans
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  8-18-2008    3
The answer is "both," according to researchers at The Johns Hopkins University, who have learned that two different areas of the brain are responsible for the way human beings handle complex sets of "if-then" rules. "This discovery may eventually lead to enhanced understanding of psychiatric diseases such as schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder and attention deficit disorder, all conditions in which a person's ability to remember and change such rules is impaired," "This indicates that different parts of our brains store different kinds of memories and information," Courtney said. That, she said, "provides clues about how the human brain accomplishes complex, goal-directed behaviors that require remembering and changing abstract rules, an ability that is disrupted in many mental illnesses."

The Do-Good Imperative

How about a windup flashlight crossed with a cell phone charger? It's low tech meets high tech with rugged, toylike charm. Or charcoal made from plant waste instead of wood, developed for Haiti by MIT's D-Lab? Talk about a greener way to barbecue. (The technology might also help save endangered African gorillas. A new study published in Science links organized crime rings cutting trees for charcoal in Congo with a spate of recent gorilla murders.)

Had a similar experience over my phone one day. Who I thought was my friend Jim called me by name when I answered the phone. The voice didn't sound familiar so I inquired of his name & he said, "Jim". "You sound a little different too." he said & to which I replied I had a cold & maybe that was the problem. Anyway he asked "Are we still getting together tonight at the same time & place?" "Sure." I said & that was it. Later on that day I bumped into Jim(My real friend) & it turns out he didn't call me earlier. The weird part is we were going to meet that night at the same place we usually meet! We both laughed & laughed at that & what the chances were that our names, time & place would coincide.

Biologists on the Verge of Creating New Form of Life
Mohir
by Mohir  9-9-2008
"We've made more progress on how the membrane of a protocell could grow and divide," Szostak said in a phone interview. "What we can do now is copy a limited set of simple sequences, but we need to be able to copy arbitrary sequences so that sequences could evolve that do something useful." By doing "something useful" for the cell, these genes would launch the new form of life down the Darwinian evolutionary path similar to the one that our oldest living ancestors must have traveled. Though where selective pressure will lead the new form of life is impossible to know.

The World Becomes the Web
wildcat
by wildcat  1-3-2008
It's already a reality in Japan through the KDDI network there, using software from GeoVector Corp. in San Francisco. Pamela Kerwin, GeoVector's vice president of strategic development, explained that LBS requires that the phone has GPS circuitry, so it knows where it is. Additionally, it needs to have a compass so it knows where it is pointed.
