A Fire Risk That Clears Security
lakotahope
by lakotahope  10-27-2009
I wonder what would happen if someone packed their laptop or other device, powered by lithium batteries, in their checked baggage. If something caught fire in the baggage hold, that to me, would be a major catastrophe. Like that airliner that went down in the Everglades when the packaged air generators ignited....

Wall Street celebrates bonuses, schools beg for supplies
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  10-20-2009    2
We see stories like “Recession Pinches Back-to-School Budgets” http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/10/03/eveningnews/main5361456.shtml and “School budgets dip, class sizes grow” http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32156424/ns/us_news-education/ along with reports of Wall Street reaping fat bonuses after being bailed out with taxpayer dollars. Sure, the bailouts were necessary to keep the economy afloat. Or so we are led to believe. And while the wisdom of a Wall Street bailout is being debated there is no debate about whether or not our schools need more money. Should public schools needs be ranked second to Wall Street because schools don’t turn a profit? Actually, if your head is on straight, you can clearly see how schools do turn a profit, but you need to value education above making money in order to see it. If you do, here’s an online charity that connects you to classrooms in need: http://www.donorschoose.org/

Media Ignoring Conservatives' Return to Dominance of Political Book Market
merrie
by merrie  10-15-2009    1
In September of that year, the Boston Globe proclaimed liberals "triumphant" against "conservatives' decade long hold on popular culture." Yes, it seemed such wonderful liberal values were finally en vogue. Barnes and Noble, reacting to the outpouring of Bush-bashing literature in August of 2003 announced that it would set up ‘political science/cultural affairs' tables at its stores to feature the newest partisan works. But conservatives have reclaimed their hold on the Times's bestseller page. The closest any of the top 15 hard-cover non-fiction books gets to a defense of liberalism or the Obama Administration is In Fed We Trust by David Wessel "The books from the left strike me as an obvious reaction to Bush," conservative commentator Tucker Carlson told the Associated Press in 2003. "And for people who buy them, it's a way of voting against him in an off-election year." With Bush gone, liberals no longer have a blatant target at whom to direct a coordinated

WH Science Czar John Holdren: Ice Age Will Kill 1 Billion
merrie
by merrie  10-11-2009    1
Holdren and Ehrlich had previously articulated the theory in their 1973 textbook "Human Ecology: Problems and Solutions" in which they argued on page 198 that the main effect of carbon-dioxide-induced global warming "might be to speed up circulation patterns and to bring arctic cold farther south and Antarctic cold farther north." On page 377, the authors returned to their constant theme: The only way to control a foreseen increasing global food crisis was to control population. Noting that a 1967 presidential science advisory commission had concluded that the solution to the "world food problem" likely after 1985 "demands that programs of population control be initiated now." (Emphasis in original text.) Commenting on the conclusions of the 1967 presidential advisory report, the authors wrote, "We emphatically agreed then, and the situation is even more urgent today." A controversial report released earlier this month by the Congressional Budget Office, or CBO,

Active Thermitic Material Discovered in Dust from the 9/11 WTC Catastrophe
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  9-18-2009    1
We have discovered distinctive red/gray chips in all the samples we have studied of the dust produced by the destruction of the World Trade Center. The properties of these chips were analyzed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (XEDS), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The red material contains grains approximately 100 nm across which are largely iron oxide, while aluminum is contained in tiny plate-like structures. Numerous iron-rich spheres are clearly observed in the residue following the ignition of these peculiar red/gray chips. The red portion of these chips is found to be an unreacted thermitic material and highly energetic.

The head of the French military said Thursday that military intervention is no longer a viable option to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear capability. French chief-of-staff Gen. Jean-Louis Georgelin said following a speech that that he believes a military operation would be too risky. "It is very difficult to plan a military operation in Iran, because we are not sure in one shot to be able to solve a problem and if you fail in one shot, it is a catastrophe," he said in English. "I don't think at this stage a military option is still available." Georgelin was answering a question after a speech at the Atlantic Council in Washington on France's new relationship with NATO and stressed that the comment was his opinion. Georgelin was in the United States to attend a ceremony Wednesday as French Gen. Stephane Abrial became the first non-American officer to permanently fill a NATO command post.

Giant Dams: Mutli-Threats to Humans and Planet
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  9-4-2009
Hydropower dams may play a role in creating and releasing methane but the greater danger has not yet been investigated or evaluated. What's that? What effect(s) does the disruption and rapid change of the larger natural system cause? Multiple dams on the Ohio, Missouri, and Mississippi Rivers aided river transportation and controlled some annual flooding beginning in the 1930s. The result(s)? The Mississippi Delta not only stopped growing, it has begun to disappear. The natural barrier that helped to protect New Orleans from storm surges undermined - literally. Redistribution of soil along all the rivers - history and greater reliance on fertilizers and pesticides. There is now a 70 mile dead zone at the end of the Mississippi that is growing each year. The Three Gorges Dam complex in China - its impact(s)? Flyways of migratory birds disrupted/altered. A role in the spread of Avian Flu? Who's got a bandage for my foot, I think we shot ourselves again!

LA Official Blames Environmentalists for Raging Wildfires

Biologist Ileene Anderson with the Center for Biological Diversity, an environmental organization, said burn permits should be difficult to get because of the potential damage to air quality. Clearing chaparral by hand or machine must be closely scrutinized because it can hurt native species. "Our air quality, for a variety of factors, doesn't need to be further reduced by these controlled burns," she said. /tree-hugging eco-whacko

Post-Katrina 'vigilante' violence: rumor or fact?
foxyarse
by foxyarse  9-2-2009
What actually happened and who is culpable in these incidents is now the focus of probes by the US Attorney's Office and the FBI. Asked why investigations like these are just now being launched, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin recently explained, "We had a little event called Katrina." Some New Orleanians believe the allegations point to "a broader pattern of violence ... that should reframe our understanding of the catastrophe," writes A.C. Thompson, a reporter with ProPublica, a nonprofit journalism venture. In an article published in The Nation, a weekly news magazine, he claims that incidents of white-on-black violence "have gone unpunished." But teasing the facts out of a flood of rumor and grains of truth will be daunting. It is a "morally treacherous" gambit to measure the actions of stressed people in the virtually lawless state of post-Katrina New Orleans by typical standards, says Peter Scharf, a criminologist at Tulane University. The outcome, he worries, could impact t

Earth Experiment Could Buy Precious Time
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  9-2-2009    1
Initial results suggest that the biggest cooling would occur in the polar regions, which is consistent with theory, and is exactly the place where cooling is most needed. The big advantages of this scheme are that it uses sea water spray, a naturally occurring substance, and that it can be turned off immediately if there are any undesirable consequences.

NTSB: Controller didn't warn plane in midair crash
aklimento
by aklimento  8-27-2009    1
Three factors are usually contributing to any catastrophe: negligence, recklessness (kind of boasting stupidity) and bureaucracy. If controller was on the phone and his supervisor ran somewhere - so it was routine practice for everybody in this airport. I am pretty sure pilots used this airport have a lot to say, although they also could prefer to keep their mouth shut since it is private planes in private businesses. It was said before that pilots of helicopters check for each other in the air. There is no any other control system besides pilots, covering their asses? Sound like bad joke, but if it is what was said...
