Why is the modern view of progress so impoverished?
Socratoad
by Socratoad  12-22-2009
The trouble is that a belief in progress is more than just a branch of accounting. The books are never closed. Wouldn’t nuclear war or environmental catastrophe tip the balance into the red? And the accounts are full of blank columns. How does the unknown book-keeper reconcile such unknowable quantities as happiness and fulfilment across the ages? As Adam traverses history, he sees material progress combined with spiritual decline.

“It’s a Catastrophe,” said a Member of the European Delegation
merrie
by merrie  12-20-2009    2
But the agreement – reached in Friday night talks between Obama and leaders of China, India, South Africa and Brazil – was more notable for what it doesn’t accomplish than what it does, an inconvenient truth Obama ruefully acknowledged to reporters. He conceded that no more specific deal – much less a legally binding one – was possible until the issue of “trust” between industrialized and developing nations was resolved. The agreement contained none of the specific emissions targets European and African negotiators had hoped to nail down, simply a broad-brush promise by the countries in the room to cap the overall global temperature rise to two degrees Celsius and provide a written record of their planned reductions. It’s unclear how many nations, particularly poorer countries who felt shut out of the process, were included in the final deal or how they will vote if the deal is put to one.

Mankind's abuse of its life supporting environment is almost to enormous to comprehend. What is happening in the sea is clear for all to see, even if the climate science is slightly foggy at the moment.

In this way, you can show your sincere appreciation for their act of voting us into a depression. For voting in favor of an economic catastrophe. After the election, I recall a bitter taste in my mouth. Scrutinizing my neighbors. Questioning them, mentally, as to their motives. More than a year later, the Obama bumper stickers and signs have all but disappeared. The economic disaster, endemic to any Socialist strategy -- and especially that of Alinsky's acolyte -- is apparent to all but the most obtuse observer. Doug Ross http://bit.ly/78k5Rq

In Search Of... THE COMING ICE AGE! Flashback Video (1970s)

So when liberals come up with the next man-made coming disaster after this one, just remember the series of hoaxes like the one above. For all the history of the Earth, a few decades is a small blip on the grand scale, and what these alarmists are doing is equivalent to tracking the temperature from winter to spring (it hotter!) to summer (it's really, really hotter!) and claiming that the Earth will melt down by December and, natch, the solution is always the same: statism. theblogprof.blogspot.com/ Read post and view Videos (part2 and part3) http://bit.ly/5fuwQK Also: In Search Of...  That stimulus has failed to stimulate, and the administration's claims of jobs it has supposedly created or saved have been discredited and become a national scandal. Obama's excuse: Calculating a jobs number is an "inexact science." Small, targeted tax cuts like the one aimed at small business won't do much for hiring. "This is an anti-risk-taking climate," says Republican representative Paul Ryan. "You have to give them incentives to lower the price of risk." Ryan recommends cutting the business income tax to 25 percent from 35 percent, eliminating the tax on capital gains for two years, and providing a 100 percent tax writeoff for equipment, plant construction, and other expenses the first year. Hiring would follow. Presidents from Calvin Coolidge to John Kennedy to Ronald Reagan to George Bush understood that strong incentives are necessary to trigger rapid growth and hiring.

Until we will get clear answers for all questions about this catastrophe of historic significance the guilt for that will lie on all of us as tremendous burden, breaking progress and prosperity in society. Our life cannot be built on lies and games of crooks from behind the scene. This is our duty, each of us, to take possible participation in forming independent public body with all controlling mechanisms for full scale investigation and unlimited subpoena power. Our duty before our dead, cruelly and violently murdered. Our duty before our children and next generations to find the true now, in our lifetime, not swiping it under the rug for their uncertain future as sign of our cowardice.

Experts say it will take many more years before there are changes in these deeply rooted traditions. "They continue these animal sacrifice rituals because they believe it is a tradition that can't be broken," said Ram Bahadur Chetri, an anthropology professor at Katmandu's Tribhuwan University. "The people who follow these traditions believe that if they discontinue, then the gods will get angry and there could be catastrophe in the country."

An American Catastrophe

"Detroit and its environs are suffering the agonies of the economic damned because of policies, crafted at the highest national and corporate levels, that resulted in the implosion of crucially important components of America’s manufacturing base. Those decisions have had a profound effect on the fortunes not just of Detroit, or even Michigan, but the entire U.S. economy." I can't believe some of the words I read from another clipper describing hard working union members as incompetent and drunks. It's attitudes like his that have absolutely no compassion for loss of good paying jobs, the base of the middle class, and worker's rights to share some of the profits they helped create. It's small, petty, greedy, and jealous thinking with a superior ass attitude that the working man/woman doesn't deserve as good as himself.

'Consensus' on Climate Change Is 'Fake,' Scientists Say

The present cooling was NOT predicted by the alarmists' computer models, and has come as an embarrassment to them. . . "We are flooded with claims that the evidence is clear, that the debate is closed, that we must act immediately, etc., but in fact there is no such evidence. It doesn't exist." The Oct. 29 letter also notes that the American Physical Society, an organization of physicists, did not sign the AAAS letter and states the society is "at this moment reviewing its stance on so-called global warming, having received a petition from its membership to do so. That petition was signed by 160 distinguished members and fellows of the society, including one Nobelist and 12 members of the National Academies. Indeed a score of the signers are Members and Fellows of the AAAS, none of whom were consulted before the AAAS letter to you."

Wall Street celebrates bonuses, schools beg for supplies

We see stories like “Recession Pinches Back-to-School Budgets” http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/10/03/eveningnews/main5361456.shtml and “School budgets dip, class sizes grow” http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32156424/ns/us_news-education/ along with reports of Wall Street reaping fat bonuses after being bailed out with taxpayer dollars. Sure, the bailouts were necessary to keep the economy afloat. Or so we are led to believe. And while the wisdom of a Wall Street bailout is being debated there is no debate about whether or not our schools need more money. Should public schools needs be ranked second to Wall Street because schools don’t turn a profit? Actually, if your head is on straight, you can clearly see how schools do turn a profit, but you need to value education above making money in order to see it. If you do, here’s an online charity that connects you to classrooms in need: http://www.donorschoose.org/

Media Ignoring Conservatives' Return to Dominance of Political Book Market

In September of that year, the Boston Globe proclaimed liberals "triumphant" against "conservatives' decade long hold on popular culture." Yes, it seemed such wonderful liberal values were finally en vogue. Barnes and Noble, reacting to the outpouring of Bush-bashing literature in August of 2003 announced that it would set up ‘political science/cultural affairs' tables at its stores to feature the newest partisan works. But conservatives have reclaimed their hold on the Times's bestseller page. The closest any of the top 15 hard-cover non-fiction books gets to a defense of liberalism or the Obama Administration is In Fed We Trust by David Wessel "The books from the left strike me as an obvious reaction to Bush," conservative commentator Tucker Carlson told the Associated Press in 2003. WH Science Czar John Holdren: Ice Age Will Kill 1 Billion

Holdren and Ehrlich had previously articulated the theory in their 1973 textbook "Human Ecology: Problems and Solutions" in which they argued on page 198 that the main effect of carbon-dioxide-induced global warming "might be to speed up circulation patterns and to bring arctic cold farther south and Antarctic cold farther north." On page 377, the authors returned to their constant theme: The only way to control a foreseen increasing global food crisis was to control population. Noting that a 1967 presidential science advisory commission had concluded that the solution to the "world food problem" likely after 1985 "demands that programs of population control be initiated now." (Emphasis in original text.) Commenting on the conclusions of the 1967 presidential advisory report, the authors wrote, "We emphatically agreed then, and the situation is even more urgent today." A controversial report released earlier this month by the Congressional Budget Office, or CBO,

Active Thermitic Material Discovered in Dust from the 9/11 WTC Catastrophe
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  9-18-2009    1
We have discovered distinctive red/gray chips in all the samples we have studied of the dust produced by the destruction of the World Trade Center. The properties of these chips were analyzed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (XEDS), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The red material contains grains approximately 100 nm across which are largely iron oxide, while aluminum is contained in tiny plate-like structures. Numerous iron-rich spheres are clearly observed in the residue following the ignition of these peculiar red/gray chips. The red portion of these chips is found to be an unreacted thermitic material and highly energetic.

The head of the French military said Thursday that military intervention is no longer a viable option to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear capability. French chief-of-staff Gen. Jean-Louis Georgelin said following a speech that that he believes a military operation would be too risky. "It is very difficult to plan a military operation in Iran, because we are not sure in one shot to be able to solve a problem and if you fail in one shot, it is a catastrophe," he said in English. "I don't think at this stage a military option is still available." Georgelin was answering a question after a speech at the Atlantic Council in Washington on France's new relationship with NATO and stressed that the comment was his opinion. Georgelin was in the United States to attend a ceremony Wednesday as French Gen. Stephane Abrial became the first non-American officer to permanently fill a NATO command post.

Initial results suggest that the biggest cooling would occur in the polar regions, which is consistent with theory, and is exactly the place where cooling is most needed. The big advantages of this scheme are that it uses sea water spray, a naturally occurring substance, and that it can be turned off immediately if there are any undesirable consequences.

If controller was on the phone and his supervisor ran somewhere - so it was routine practice for everybody in this airport. I am pretty sure pilots used this airport have a lot to say, although they also could prefer to keep their mouth shut since it is private planes in private businesses. It was said before that pilots of helicopters check for each other in the air. There is no any other control system besides pilots, covering their asses?
