Albert Einstein Quotes on Life
tidbit2
by tidbit2  5-12-2009
more: "What is the meaning of human life, or, for that matter, of the life of any creature? To know an answer to this question means to be religious. You ask: Does it make any sense, then, to pose this question? I answer: The man who regards his own life and that of his fellow creatures as meaningless is not merely unhappy but hardly fit for life." - Mein Weltbild, Amsterdam: Querido Verlag, 1934. "So I am living without fats, without meat, without fish, but am feeling quite well this way. It always seems to me that man was not born to be a carnivore." but he also said: "I have always eaten animal flesh with a somewhat guilty conscience."

T-Rex no match for 'Big Tooth'
pokkets
by pokkets  8-4-2008
Carcharodon megalodon, or 'Big Tooth', an ancestor of today's Great White Shark, may have grown to 16 metres and weighed 100 tonnes, generating between 10.8 to 18.2 tonnes of bite force.- between 3 and 6 times that of the T-Rex. Still the T-Rex probably got better traction, and kept clear of sharks. The largest modern Great Whites have about 1.8 tonnes, An African Lion 560 kg, and we can manage about 80kg (Great for biting apples, or cracking walnuts or teeth) We have still managed to become the world's most efficient predator artificially. We can wipe something out just because we don't like the way it looks at us.

Terrestrial Ancestor of Whales Discovered
tabsey
by tabsey  1-27-2008
This theory turns popular understanding of whale evolution upside down. Until now, it was a widely held belief that today's whales are the descendents of a terrestrial carnivore—not some deer-sized herbivorous ungulate.

Girls who don't like MEAT
ouyangwulong
by ouyangwulong  12-8-2007    6
So, the title is a little racy, I"m gonna see what that does for me. ;) Anyway, that is the most ridiculously suggestive pear I've ever seen! (And I've seen a lot of ridiculously suggestive pears, so I would know!) But on the other hand, this does raise a number of important questions about vegetarianism for me. First and foremost: is it really a moral decision? Or simply a solipsistic way of feeling self-important? Mind you, there are plenty of legitimate vegetarians. (Even I experimented with vegansexuality when I was in college, but it was just a phase, I swear! ;) Ted Haggard cured me!) (I also own all the Smiths albums, so that should get me off the hook, right?) But there are a lot more vegetarians out there who are really over the top, and I begin to wonder what they're trying to achieve. Why take a moral stand, but only for cute animals? Why the rhetoric? Above all else, why the evangelism and hostility towards non-vegetarians?

Sea Turtles' Mystery Hideout Revealed
Amergin
by Amergin  9-21-2007
Before this study, scientists had two "snapshots" that provided scant clues about the missing information on the lives of green turtles: When they hatch, the 2-inch-long (5-centimeters) sea turtles push through seemingly colossal surf. Then, between three and five years later, the now juveniles reappear closer to shore. The scientists collected samples from the shells of 44 green sea turtles at a site near Great Inagua in the Bahamas. They analyzed heavy and light stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen from both the oldest (earliest-grown) and newest sections of the shells. The isotopes act as fingerprints for an animal's diet (carnivore or herbivore) and where in the ocean the animal lived. The results indicated the green sea turtles spent their lost years in the deep ocean, feeding as carnivores, before moving closer to shore and switching to a vegetarian diet of sea grasses.
