Faith in Free-Market Capitalism Is Being Rewarded
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  12-31-2009
The biggest source of economic stimulus is not the $800 billion Barack Obama spending package. It's the $4.6 trillion of capital gains thrown off by the stock market over the past three quarters. This is investment money, and it also enhances consumer spending. As a result, jobs are likely to start rising early in 2010. The other source of economic stimulus is the amount of money Michael Moore invests in Dominos Pizza and Krispy Kreme, only later to bemoan those same corporations in which he owns shares. Michael Moore-on's movie in which he capitalistically makes money off of gullible liberals’ hatred of capitalism? Seriously, not only did that movie bomb, but the hippo-like hypocrite became enchanted by the ideals of socialism when he took an economics class while coked out of his mind. Using socialism to help revive a failing economy is like putting angry weasels down your pants because you need some rest.

Is he on another planet?' houston Paul and Margaret Houston are furious that Ibrahim can remain in the UK The 39-year-old engineer, from Darwen, Lancashire, added: 'If I thought he was genuinely sorry, I would have stood up in court and said I didn't want him to be taken away from his children.' All Ibrahim's applications for asylum and citizenship had been rejected at the time of the accident. But although he was technically awaiting deportation, he was not returned to Iraq because it was too dangerous. Just weeks before knocking down Amy outside her home in November 2003, Ibrahim had been banned for nine months for driving while disqualified and without insurance or a licence. Will You Still Need Me, Will You Still Feed Me, When I’m Sixty-Four? …No!

Democrats today voted to cut nearly half a trillion dollars from Medicare. The AP reported: Casting its first votes on revamping the nation’s health care system, the Senate rejected a Republican bid Thursday to stave off Medicare cuts and approved safeguards for coverage of mammograms and other preventive tests for women. The first round of votes ended with a fragile Democratic coalition hanging together. Senators voted 58-42 to reject an amendment by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., that would have stripped more than $400 billion in Medicare cuts from the nearly $1 trillion measure. It would have sent the entire 2,074-page bill back to the Senate Finance Committee for a redo. Republicans said the proposed cuts to health insurance plans and medical providers mean seniors in the popular Medicare Advantage program will lose benefits. And they predicted lawmakers will ultimately back away from the cuts, once seniors start feeling the brunt.

Looking at the math behind "53 miles per burrito"
Lexica
by Lexica  11-17-2009    1
More: Of course, a burrito comes with sales taxes, which pay for another fraction of that road. And the margin on a burrito is much higher than on gasoline - that margin then becomes profit for the owner and wages for the workers, all of which are taxable and turn into another fraction of that road I am freeloading on. Beyond the margin for the taqueria, money is made by people who grow and sell food, which is ostensibly a nobler pursuit than drilling, baby, drilling. But the real bottom line? It's not really 53 miles per burrito. It's one burrito per 53 miles. If you are sitting in your car, you will be shortly sitting on that burrito as it becomes a permanent part of your ass. I meanwhile will be adding extra guacamole because after I rode 53 miles to work, I ride 7 miles back to Caltrain on the way home. Yum. Guacamole, anyone? :-D

California going down the drain?
foxyarse
by foxyarse  10-5-2009
Sitting propped up against a lamp post, waiting for her number to be called, is Debbie Tuua, 33. It is her birthday, but she has taken a day off work to bring her elderly parents to the Forum, and they have driven through the night to get here. They wait in a car as the heat of the day begins to rise. "It is awful for them, but what choice do we have?" Tuua says. "I have no other way to get care to them." Yet California is currently cutting healthcare, slashing the "Healthy Families" programme that helped an estimated one million of its poorest children. Los Angeles now has a poverty rate of 20%. Other cities across the state, such as Fresno and Modesto, have jobless rates that rival Detroit's. In order to pass its state budget, California's government has had to agree to a deal that cuts billions of dollars from education and sacks 60,000 state employees. Some teachers have launched a hunger strike in protest. California's education system has become so poor so quickly that it is n

"Stephanopoulos : That may be, but it's still a tax increase. Tele-POTUS : No. That's not true, George. For us to say that you've got to take a responsibility to get health insurance is absolutely not a tax increase. What it's saying is, is that we're not going to have other people carrying your burdens for you anymore than the fact that right now everybody in America, just about, has to get auto insurance. Nobody considers that a tax increase. People say to themselves, that is a fair way to make sure that if you hit my car, that I'm not covering all the costs. I’ll remind you, a little history lesson " the Nazis were the National Socialist Party, they were leftists. They took over the finance. They took over the car industry. They took over health care in that country. If Nancy Pelosi wants to find a swastika, maybe the first place she should look is the sleeve on her own arm.  who only want to insure against the possibility that they'll be hit by a truck. So politicians at both the state and federal level keep passing boatloads of insurance mandates requiring that all insurance plans cover a raft of non-emergency conditions that are expensive to treat -- but whose practitioners have high-priced lobbyists. Insurance plans that force everyone in the plan to pay for everyone else's Viagra and anti-anxiety pills are already completely unfair to people who rarely go to the doctor. It's like being forced to share gas bills with a long-haul trucker or a restaurant bill with Michael Moore. On the other hand, it's a great deal for any lonely hypochondriacs in the plan. Now the Democrats want to force us all into one gigantic national health insurance plan that will cover every real and mythical ailment that has a powerful lobby.

The squeegee guys of health care
kareval
by kareval  8-22-2009    4
President Obama has failed to convince Americans that our health care is broken. Just saying so doesn't make it so. The evidence just is not there. We don't have a broken medical system. If 84 % percent of the US population is happy with their health insurance, why break it all down and promise to start from scratch for just another couple of trillion bucks? The stimulus bill was a gigantic waste, the biggest waste in American history -- except for TARP. And TARP has been denounced by its own Inspector General for a lack of transparency. That is a signal of corruption -- and it's typical of humongous government projects that are way beyond oversight and accountability. In Europe, the EU bureaucracy has failed its internal accountant's reports for twelve straight years. It is way too corrupt to expose to public view.

Small Banks Fail in Big Numbers
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  8-21-2009
Closures and government takeovers of failing banks have become so routine that they barely gets noticed each Friday when the FDIC makes its announcements. While the banking crisis began with escalating defaults and foreclosures on home mortgages, the increase of bank failures in recent weeks has been driven by rising losses on commercial real estate loans, which are starting to default in large numbers. Community and regional banks hold a disproportionate share of commercial real estate and construction loans. My sister-in-law works at a local bank and says they are only accepting signature loan applications, fixed 5-yr home loans, and no car loans. My brother-in-law sells commercial real estate and every loan he has setup this year has been denied. My wife works for a car dealer who is losing his lines of credit after years of pristine credit. Our home value lost $50,000 and our property taxes went up $500. How the middle class is going to survive this mess is anyone

Enterprise defended their decision to opt out of the air bags, noting that the safety feature is not yet required by the federal government. According to the Star, the decision saved Enterprise $11.5 million on the roughly 66,000 vehicles. Enterprise also said they are not the only company to buy fleets of cars without side impact air bags. But according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, studies have shown that side air bags with head protection can reduce highway deaths by up to 45 percent. An estimated 8,000 people were killed in side-impact collisions in 2007 alone, the Star reported. And while Enterprise apologized and pledged to rectify the situation, the company stopped short of a mea culpa, instead blaming a software glitch for the false advertising. “In some circumstances a software glitch caused us to describe them incorrectly as having air bags . . . .

Government involvement doesn’t accommodate certain things. Like errors. Or common sense. And that’s the real irony of liberals and their desire for government to “help.” Liberals say that they truly care about people. Or snail darters. Or baby seals. Or Gaia. And they want to use the government to make it all better. Like the government is your mommy taking care of your skint knee. That’s why the idea to let government run things — car companies, banks, health care — is a bad idea. Your mommy cares. Government regulations don’t care.

So we have this $2.2 trillion system, and I haven't met anybody in any of the stakeholders that's willing to take less. And until we're willing to have that conversation, we're just sort of nibbling around the edges." People who think that Americans don't wait on lines, don't get denied coverage after paying their premiums, don't get their coverage rescinded right when they're about to incur huge costs, don't go bankrupt from medical bills, don't DIE because some corporate bean-counter denied their claim... You're either unaware of the facts, or lying. We spend more than any other country on the planet for healthcare, and are ranked somewhere around 50th in health outcomes. That's an undisputed fact. Corporate healthcare is a failure. Social insurance I can't be any worse.

Daniel Inouye (D., Hawaii) led a group of a half-dozen senators and their spouses on a four-day trip to France for the biennial Paris Air Show. They stayed at the Intercontinental Paris Le Grand Hotel, which advertises rooms from $460 a night. The lawmakers were invited to a dinner party at the U.S. Embassy and had cocktails at a private party at the Eiffel Tower. 62 Million Voiceless Americans

Under the guise of saving the economy, the feds have taken over banks, insurance companies and car companies, prompting even thug dictator Chavez to joke, “Hey, Obama has just nationalized nothing more and nothing less than General Motors. Comrade Obama! Fidel, careful or we are going to end up to his right.” Under the guise of saving us from those nasty capitalists, Obama has appointed a new Pay Czar to make sure no-one is paid more than the politicians deem they are worth. At least those who are unfortunate to work for companies that have received bailout funds. And in one case, the formerly sovereign state of South Carolina has actually been forced to take bailout funds, and accept all the strings that come with it. Consent of the governed is being ignored as the Obama administration hijacks ever more power to the federal government, in direct contravention of the 10th amendment and the Constitution. And 62 million Americans can do nothing except marvel at the audacity.
