POPSThou SHALT shoplift: Priest tells congregation 'My advice, as a Christian priest, is to shoplift,' he told his stunned congregation at St Lawrence and St Hilda in York. 'I do not offer such advice because I think that stealing is a good thing, or because I think it is harmless, for it is neither. 'I would ask that they do not steal from small family businesses, but from large national businesses, knowing that the costs are ultimately passed on to the rest of us in the form of higher prices. 'I would ask them not to take any more than they need. I offer the advice with a heavy heart. Let my words not be misrepresented as a simplistic call for people to shoplift. 'The observation that shoplifting is the best option that some people are left with is a grim indictment of who we are. 'Rather, this is a call for our society no longer to treat its most vulnerable people with indifference and contempt.

POPSFlorida Cereal Stealer Gets 15 Years in Prison The judge who sentenced Griffin seems to agree, but said he was bound by the law to give the reoffender the mandatory minimum. “Personally, I think the money could have been better spent in treatment rather than incarceration for 15 years, but that is not my decision,” Bartow Judge Donald Jacobsen said. “It seems to me that treatment would be a far better resolution of this.”

POPSTexas DNA exonerees find prosperity after prison More: Two who served about 26 years in prison for rape will receive lump sums of about $2 million apiece. Another, Steven Phillips, who spent about 24 years in prison for sexual assault and burglary, will get about $1.9 million. The biggest compensation package will likely go to James Woodard, who spent more than 27 years in prison for a 1980 murder that DNA testing later showed he did not commit. He eventually could receive nearly $2.2 million but first needs a writ from the state's Court of Criminal Appeals or a pardon from the governor. McGowan and the others are among 38 DNA exonerees in Texas, according to the Innocence Project, a New York legal center that specializes in overturning wrongful convictions. Dallas County alone has 21 cases in which a judge overturned guilty verdicts based on DNA evidence, though prosecutors plan to retry one of those.

POPS85-Year-Old Granny Pulls Gun On Intruder, Makes Him Call 911 Good for you Granny! She grabbed a .22-caliber revolver that she said she began keeping by her bed when a neighbor's home was burglarized recently. "I motioned with the gun -- 'Come on' -- and he went ahead of me in the hallway to the living room, and we got by the telephone and I said, 'Call the cops,' and he picked it up and he dialed 911," said Smith. Smith was able to hold the teenager at bay until the state troopers arrived. "I put him on the floor," Smith said. "I said, 'Lay down on the floor, turn your head that way, spread-eagle your arms and your legs.' That's what they told me to do, and I did it." The suspect will be charged as a juvenile with attempted burglary and related offenses, police said. His name was not released because of his age.

Yet Martin could not think of any other way to explain what happened to Gates than racism. He is fascinated by the story. He talks about it at work, to friends, on the phone, on Facebook. On Wednesday, he changed his Facebook status to: "Wayne Martin is wondering when it became illegal to be angry at a law enforcement official." Sabine Charles, 37, a white cardiologist who lives in Hyde Park, is married to a black man. She said that she could not count how many times people have interrupted the two over the years to ask her, quietly, "Is this man bothering you?" "I say, 'Guess what? He's not! We're actually on a romantic date, can't you tell?'" she said. "Even here in this diverse area I've heard people say, 'Look at those black guys coming toward us.' I say, 'Yes, but they're wearing lacrosse shorts and Calvin Klein jeans. They're probably the kids of the professor down the street.' "You have to be able to discern differences between people," she said, criticizing the practic

POPS18-year-old man raped 7-year-old boy More then sick. II am soooooo glad i moved away from Tampa Bay last year. Crime totally out of control. Just look at their daily mugshots to get an idea or subscribe to their rss feed. www.tampabay.com to get an idea. I think by far worse then any city in the usa. why ? because corrupted government and city officials and way they handle government. They will take any crime...even something as hideous as this. Judges may give them a year or two in jail and then 5 or so on probation. Why ? Because you have to pay the probation department for being on probation there. So it's all about the money and they could care less about the crime. Don't take my word for it. Look it up. Sentences rendered for anything from DUI, burglary, you name it. slap on wrist and put on probation so we can make money. Really surprised the federal government hasn't taken notice of this.
