Combat Wounded, Combat Dead
merrie
by merrie  11-8-2009    1
defense such as we’re already seeing explored on his behalf … rather than as a committed jihadi, an unlawful combatant, a terrorist, a deserter who aided and abetted the enemy, and a traitor who took up arms against his nation. It’s a push Republican lawmakers and those Democrats who agree could take up, that would command a lot of public support. Politicization of justice? Tell me that hasn’t happened already in this country. I’d call it a simple demand for justice. We owe it to the dead and the wounded to acknowledge why and under what circumstances they died and bled. Here’s an American hero who deserves the highest honors we can bestow on her. NY Daily News. Sgt. Kimberly Munley, cop, gunfighting woman. Went into a hot situation without regard for her own safety, gave better than she got, wounded in action, got the job done. I’d call that gallantry and valor in the face of the enemy, plus war wounds. Maybe even above and beyond. She’s reportedly an Army vet.

Children Who Suffered Bullying Are More Likely To Develop Psychotic Symptoms In Early Adolescence
foxyarse
by foxyarse  10-28-2009
A study including 6,437 early adolescents with an average age of 12.9 was carried out by Andrea Schreier, Ph.D., and his colleagues of The Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick, Coventry, England. The children participated in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). Questionnaires were regularly sent by mail to parents concerning their child's physical condition and progress since birth. Beginning at the age of seven, the children were submitted to physical and psychological evaluations on a yearly basis. During the yearly visits, they were rated by skilled interviewers on whether during the preceding six months they had experienced hallucinations, delusions, thought disorders or any other psychotic symptoms. Peer victimization is defined as harmful actions and unfair treatment by one or several other students with purpose to harm. Children, parents and teachers were required to account on whether the child had suffered such oppression.

Tucker Carlson and the Right's perpetual self-victimhood
ratilfar
by ratilfar  10-23-2009    1
Is Tucker Carlson lying or just completely ignorant of the subject matter on which he's opining? The press has been anything but "silent" about this. It's been a virtual consensus from establishment pundits and journalists of every type that the Obama White House is doing something terribly wrong by criticizing Fox. And as usual for the vapid, group-think, script-repeating, mindless wind-up dolls who compose the Beltway press corps, they even have their own endlessly repeated platitudes for condemning Obama's criticisms of Fox: it's Nixonesque. Enemies List. Also as usual, they are echoing the theme propounded by Karl Rove on Fox: "We heard this before from Richard Nixon. And we have this White House prone to that kind of attitude. . . . This is the White House engaging in its own version of the media Enemies List."

Amreeka: The Movie
ratilfar
by ratilfar  10-10-2009    2
As luck would have it, Muna has come to the US at the start of the Iraq War. Anti-Arab sentiment is raging in some quarters. Her brother-in-law, a doctor, has lost patients due to backlash, and her sister is quickly losing patience with the hatred and fear that mars their lives. Though educated and with experience in banking, Muna is unable to find work in her field, but knowing that she must become independent, continues to search for employment, finally finding a job at a local fast food restaurant. Tensions build as Muna, ashamed, tries to hide her place of work from her son and sister; as Fadi deals with bullying bigots at school; and as her sister's family begins to unravel in response to the pressures of the war, and the enormous hardships resulting from anti-Arab bias. Through it all, Muna not only survives, but remains hopeful and thankful for each kind gesture from strangers and new-found friends who come to her assistance in ways small and not so small.

Why Obama Should Not Have Received the Peace Prize — Yet
foxyarse
by foxyarse  10-9-2009    3
Any one of these would have been worthy of global praise. Perhaps the Nobel committee can give him half the prize now and withhold the other half until he accomplishes one or more of these crucial missions. robert reich Why Obama Should Not Have Received the Peace Prize YetGiving the Peace Prize to the President before any of these goals has been attained only underscores the paradox of Obama at this early stage of his presidency. He has demonstrated mastery in both delivering powerful rhetoric and providing the nation and the world with fresh and important ways of understanding current challenges. But he has not yet delivered. To the contrary, he often seems to hold back from the fight — temporizing, delaying, or compromising so much that the rhetoric and insight he offers seem strangely disconnected from what he actually does. Yet there’s time. He may yet prove to be one of the best presidents this nation has ever had — worthy not only of the Peace Prize but of every global accol

House Votes To Expand Hate Crime Laws
ljsdesign
by ljsdesign  10-8-2009
The proposed expansion would include crimes based on gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability. It eases restrictions on federally protected activities. The FBI says there are some 8,000 hate crimes reported around the country in a year. More than half of those are motivated by racial bias. Next most frequent are crimes based on religious bias at around 18 percent and sexual orientation at 16 percent. Hate crimes occur when a perpetrator targets a victim because of his or her membership in a certain social group, usually defined by race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, disability, nationality, age, gender, gender identity, or political affiliation. "Hate crime" generally refers to criminal acts which are seen to have been motivated by hatred of one or more of the listed conditions. Incidents may involve physical assault, damage to property, bullying, harassment, verbal abuse or insults, or offensive graffiti or letters.

Abuse led UK woman to kill disabled daughter, self
Lexica
by Lexica  10-1-2009    1
More: Pilkington's son Anthony, now 19, also was abused over the years. He was once taken to a shed at knifepoint and locked in by the gang — some of whose members were as young as 10. Later, he was attacked with an iron bar. The inquest in Loughborough, in central England, heard that 33 calls to police did not result in any prosecutions for bullying or harassment. In one case police reported back that Pilkington had been "overreacting" — in another case she was simply told to draw her curtains. The inquest — which under British law must be held when someone dies unexpectedly, violently or of unknown causes — ruled that police's failure to respond to the family's pleas for help contributed to their deaths. Related: Did bad care spur a mother to kill her disabled daughter?

They need to understand that the loud, obnoxious people who always seem to get the laughs get tiresome. The respectful people are more and more in demand as they grow older. Kids need to understand that the way to a better life is not by bullying and dominating others, but by being a part of their lives, sharing the good and difficult times.

The UN Loves Barack Obama Because He Is Weak
merrie
by merrie  9-24-2009    1
Not convinced about that last “seething with anti-Americanism” line, though. I think the world actually loves America. That’s why the world is all trying to get here. The world just has a bit of an adolescent attitude toward America’s dad-like role in the world. . . I’d say it’s more the United Nations General Assembly that is seething with anti-Americanism. Get back on topic, Nile! OK, here we go: It is natural that much of the UN will embrace an American president who declines to offer strong American leadership. A president who engages dictators like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hugo Chavez will naturally gain respect from the leaders of the more than 100 members of the United Nations who are currently designated as “partly free” or “not free” by respected watchdog Freedom House. The UN is not a club of democracies - who still remain a minority within its membership " it is a vast melting pot of free societies, socialist regimes and outright tyrannies.

One person's bully is another one's friend
Lexica
by Lexica  9-16-2009
Somewhat long, but worth reading. More: This learning experience was one of the most memorable ones in my fifteen year career. I learnt that some situations require spontaneity and a flexible approach. It also reinforced my belief that a good mentor knows her students. The successful resolution of this situation came about because the students cared for and respected me. I always endeavour to understand my pupils, and I work with them to forge good relationships and respect. I pay attention to detail and I care passionately about the welfare and well-being of my students and through my work I impart values of decency and trust, and the value of human relationships. I never underestimate the importance of the learning environment and the impact classroom dynamics have on students’ ability to learn. Providing the students with outstanding curriculum material presented and taught in an accomplished way is sometimes not enough.

Obama Bowing to the Global Tax Bullies
merrie
by merrie  9-10-2009    2
The international bureaucrats who run the OECD’s Fiscal Affairs Committee managed to persuade a hotel to cancel Mr. Mitchell’s reservations and then tried to get him thrown out of the public lobby of the hotel where the meeting was held — as he was quietly meeting with delegations from lower-tax jurisdictions and the press. Fortunately, when Mr. Mitchell and members of the press objected to the bullying tactics of the OECD officials, he finally was allowed to stay. The OECD is supporting the double taxation of capital and trying to quash those jurisdictions that do not levy multiple taxes on savings and investment, i.e., productive capital. Without high levels of productive capital, countries will not grow and new and well-paying jobs will be created only rarely. Taxing capital is not only economically destructive but morally suspect. If the OECD ultimately gets its way, individuals and businesses trying to protect themselves from multiple taxation . . .

Voight: Is Obama creating a civil war in America?

""Do not let the Obama administration fool you with all their cunning Alinsky methods. And if you don't know what that method is, I implore you to get the book 'Rules for Radicals,' by Saul Alinsky. Mr. Obama is very well trained in these methods," he continues, citing a television campaign critical of the Republican Party and contentious town-hall meetings about health care reform. "The real truth is that the Obama administration is professional at bullying, as we have witnessed with ACORN at work during the presidential campaign. It seems to me they are sending down their bullies to create fist fights among average American citizens who don't want a government-run health care plan forced upon them," Mr. Voight says. "So I ask again. Is President Obama creating a civil war in our own country?""

How do school bullies know that they bully?

Also ignored by researchers, bullying behavior does not happen in a vaccum - schools in which young people bully other young people is a school where adults bully other adults, and young people bully adults, and adults bully young people, too. This study helps explain why all forms of bullying by all sorts of school community members is routinely ignored and not recognized.

 The organizations he champions are no better. The problem for the ordinary citizen when it comes to Obama cronies is twofold. First, the main news outlets have been loath to take a hard look at Obama's friends, colleagues and allies. Each person is lauded as a brilliant choice and it's only been thanks to dogged work from Republican politicos and conservative bloggers that the rot under each person's shining carapace was revealed. The organizations are ignored. Second, the myriad failings dogging Barack's buddies are so voluminous and diverse that it's very easy to lose track of things or to throw up one's hands in despair and ignore the whole problem entirely. Michelle Malkin has taken it upon herself to resolve this twofold problem. In a single, compulsively easy-to-read book, she organizes the various players in the Obama administration: his tax-defective cabinet; his "bitter half," aka Michelle Obama; his nepotistic Veep; his unusually crooked cabinet;
