tabsey
by tabsey  10-5-2008
During the European Renaissance, it was, nevertheless, financial measures almost exactly like those used by banks and financial institutions today which freed up the flow of wealth to produce economic growth, and thence the great flowering of art and culture, creating the accumulation of glorious artistic treasures now housed in museums and galleries worldwide.

The Bailout, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, The Fed and Monetary Policy
merrie
by merrie  10-3-2008
The Cato Institute has been following the crisis in financial markets since the very beginning. From the sub prime crisis to Fannie and Freddie to the $700 billion bailout, the recent financial events have given our analysts and experts plenty to talk and write about. We decided to pull together the op-eds, podcasts, reports, and publications from our scholars on this issue, so all these resources can exist in one place. We hope it’s a useful tool for your research. "The Bush Legacy: Deflation or Inflation?," "The Greenback and Commodity Prices," "Milton Friedman: Float or Fix?," "Washington Is Quietly Repudiating Its Debts," "The Greenback and Commodity Prices," "Polluted Markets," "The Fed Plays With Fire," "Greenspan's Bubbles," "Keep Complaining about the Economy, "Asset Bubbles and Their Consequences," more op-eds, podcasts, reports, and publications at link: http://www.cato.org/special/financial_crisis/

Oil Bubbles Point to Eco Disaster in Paradise
merrie
by merrie  9-2-2008
Collapse danger "What is frightening is that the Hoyo appears to be leaking from an area where oil was stored," Jeffery told New Scientist. Nor is the Hoyo Maru the only ship to be leaking oil – although for now, it is the only tanker which has been seen to leak. Jeffery and his colleagues are now seeking Japanese historians and shipping experts who could remotely assess the contents of the Hoyo's oil storage tanks. If the ship is found to contain large amounts of diesel, this will need to be pumped out in order to avoid severe damage to the local biodiversity and economy. The situation is likely to repeat itself around the Pacific over coming years. "A lot of these wrecks are in areas where the communities just don't have the resources to deal with oil pollution," warns Jeffery. In 2003, the US government pumped 10 million litres of fuel from the sunken hull of the USS Mississinewa, a US tanker that was destroyed by the Japanese in 1944 in the Western Pacific.

Scientists Create World's Thinnest Balloon
Mohir
by Mohir  8-7-2008
Other potential applications include hyper-fine sensors and ultra-pure filters. "Once you have a membrane that won't let anything past, the most interesting thing is to then poke a hole in it. Then you can detect what leaks through that hole with high sensitivity, or make sure only what you want leaks through that hole," McEuen said. The only way gas leaked out from inside the balloons was through the glass that the bubbles were anchored on, McEuen explained.

Massive Radio-telescope in China to Explore 'Dark Age' of Early Universe
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  8-5-2008    1
The new study is part of a broader effort to understand the early years of the universe, after the big bang using computer simulations can help scientists understand events like the birth of the first stars in the universe. During much of the universe's first billion years, the awesome brilliance born of the big bang faded to black. This dark age represents the least-understood chapter in the history of the cosmos scientists have compiled.
