by zizzy  10-4-2009
From the New York Times archives BY REV. DR. BACON. March 20, 1852, Wednesday Page 1, 1249 words Dr. BACON gave his second lecture on Eastern Travels at the Tabernac'e last evening, The lecturer proposed briefly to speak of the Euphrates, the Tigris, and the adjacent countries. Tile section attended to embraces nearly all the countries noticed in the New Testament as having been visited by the Apostles of Christ--the regions most celebrated in ancient history Babylon and Tyre, the first of tile great empire cities and the Syrian kingdoms. From Diarbakir you descend the Tigris to Mosul ... The scenery is far surpassed by any ever seen by the lecturer. It banks are covered by ancient tombs and cities, and in one place where the ruins of a massive bridge, with some arches and towers, that in its time must have surpassed in strength and beauty, the bridges that span the Thames in London.

UC Berkeley scientists unveil skeleton that shares chimp, human features

More: she is not "the missing link," a transitional creature between today's chimps and humans. This concept has been abandoned: We did not evolve from living champs or apes, but shared a common ancestor. Nor is she this long-sought "last common ancestor." That's because she's too young; chimps and humans are thought to have diverged between 5 million and 10 million years ago. Then we went our separate ways, each taking different evolutionary trajectories. But she's important because she is the closest we have come to this unfound "last common ancestor." She belonged to a new type of early hominid that was neither chimpanzee nor fully human.

The U.S. Geological Survey declined to say whether the two quakes were linked. "The simple answer is we can't speculate on a connection," said Carrieann Bedwell of the USGS. "Both are in highly seismic areas." The epicenters of the two temblors are about 4,700 miles (7,600 kilometers) apart.

The G20 in Pittsburgh showed us how pitifully fearful our leaders have become. What no terrorist could do to us, our own leaders did
sincitykitty
by sincitykitty  9-28-2009
For days, downtown Pittsburgh, home to the G20, was a turned into a militarized people-free ghost town. Sirens screamed day and night. Helicopters crisscrossed the skies. Gunboats sat in the rivers. The skies were defended by Air Force jets. Streets were barricaded by huge cement blocks and fencing. Bridges were closed with National Guard across the entrances. Public transportation was stopped downtown. Amtrak train service was suspended for days.

Four thousand police were on duty plus 2500 National Guard plus Coast Guard and Air Force and dozens of other security agencies. A thousand volunteers from other police forces were sworn in to help out. Police were dressed in battle gear, bulky black ninja turtle outfits: helmets with clear visors, strapped on body armor, shin guards, big boots, batons, and long guns. In addition to helicopters, the police had hundreds of cars and motorcycles , armored vehicles, monster trucks, small electric go-karts. There were even passenger vans screaming through town so stuffed with heavily armed ninja turtles that the side and rear doors remained open. No terrorists showed up at the G20. Since no terrorists showed up, those in charge of the heavily armed security forces chose to deploy their forces around those who were protesting. Not everyone is delighted that 20 countries control 80% of the world’s resources. Several thousand of them chose to express their displeasure by protest

Release the Terrorist, Investigate the CIA by Andy McCarthy
merrie
by merrie  8-27-2009
Excerpt from Wall Street Journals Editorial "The Real CIA News" The most revealing portion of the IG report documents the program's results. The CIA's "detention and interrogation of terrorists has provided intelligence that has enabled the identification and apprehension of other terrorists and warned of terrorist plots planned for the United States and around the world." That included the identification of Jose Padilla and Binyam Muhammed, who planned to detonate a dirty bomb, and the arrest of previously unknown members of an al Qaeda cell in Karachi, Pakistan, designated to pilot an aircraft attack in the U.S. The information also made the CIA aware of plots to attack the U.S. consulate in Karachi, hijack aircraft to fly into Heathrow, loosen track spikes to derail a U.S. train, blow up U.S. gas stations, fly an airplane into a California building, and cut the lines of suspension bridges in New York.

Terror from the Right: 75 Plots, Conspiracies and Racist Rampages Since Oklahoma City
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  8-26-2009    4
From the article: “. . .a detailed listing of major terrorist plots and racist rampages that have emerged from the American radical right in the years since Oklahoma City.” This is part of a report released by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which, in the past has been found to stretch the truth a bit to fit their own agenda. So take this with a grain of salt. That is not to say these attacks, etc, did not occur, I personally don’t believe that they are all the work of the radical right. I mean there are a lot of nutcases on the left too. Anyway, it serves more as a modern day history lesson on how extremist operate in this country. Thank God most of them were too stupid and inept to pull off their little rampages of hate.

Is It Now a Crime to Be Poor?
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  8-20-2009    6
The City Council in Grand Junction, Colo., has been considering a ban on begging, and at the end of June, Tempe, Ariz., carried out a four-day crackdown on the indigent. How do you know when someone is indigent? As a Las Vegas statute puts it, “An indigent person is a person whom a reasonable ordinary person would believe to be entitled to apply for or receive” public assistance. By far the most reliable way to be criminalized by poverty is to have the wrong-color skin. There’s no minimum age for being sucked into what the Children’s Defense Fund calls “the cradle-to-prison pipeline.” Leonardo Vilchis of the Union de Vecinos, a community organization in Los Angeles, suspects that “poor people have become a source of revenue” for recession-starved cities, and that the police can always find a violation leading to a fine. The safety net, or what’s left of it, has been transformed into a dragnet.

Is It Now a Crime to Be Poor?
pennyserenade

"Maybe we can’t afford the measures that would begin to alleviate America’s growing poverty " affordable housing, good schools, reliable public transportation and so forth. I would argue otherwise, but for now I’d be content with a consensus that, if we can’t afford to truly help the poor, neither can we afford to go on tormenting them."

And I thought Portland was a Biking town ...
speerclan
by speerclan  8-13-2009    1
But this ... this is clearly what I would call a bicyclers Capitol. I've never been to Amsterdam, although I've met several people from there, and even a missionary who went there to try and help the younger generation connect with their spiritual lives. But, I have ALWAYS been impressed with the biking culture they have there. This post, and these pictures goes a long way in describing it. Mostly, I just loved the pics, and thought you might like to see what a LOT of bikes looks like.
